Introduction On my journey on learning about the basic concepts and principles of good quality supervision, I feel that I have started to get a good understanding of what is required of the supervisee and supervisor partnership. I will explain some of the fundamental ideas and rules, that I believe make up good supervision. 1. Analysis of basic concepts and principles of good quality supervision I have learned that the relationship between supervisee and supervisor must be of a professional and formal partnership, to deviate from this would change the dynamics of the relationship and stop both the supervisee and the supervisor being truly open. By maintaining the professional boundaries, the client will receive the best support possible as well as new skills and possible incites that the supervisee can inherit from the supervision session. “Supervision is a joint endeavour in which a practitioner with the help of a supervisor, attends to their clients, themselves as part of their client practitioner relationships and the wider systemic context and by so doing improves the quality of their work, transforming their client relationships, continuously develops themselves, their practice and the wider profession.” Hawkins P & Shohet R 2012:60 I have found that to find good quality supervision, it is important to first find and meet a supervisor that has got an approved qualification and is currently registered on a recognised counselling data base, it is then important to
Counsellors are required to have adequate training and supervision to help maintain them throughout their professional lives. Counsellor must be respectful of their professional position and remain loyal to their clients.
I carry out the supervisions to my team leaders as well as support workers to promote and support an effective communication within their role. I ensure they undertake the relevant training to help them communicate better to lead our company to a success.
My supervision is always held in a confidential setting, between myself and my Manager. My Manager records details of what has been discussed, targets identified, and achievement target dates to be met by me and my Manager. This is my personal development plan, and helps me to record training received, training identified, and knowledge gained. My supervision is my opportunity to discuss issues I am concerned about. Sometimes prior to my supervision, I write down notes on issues I want to raise, so that I do not forget whilst in my supervision.
The key principle of supervision is for the worker to be able to carry out their job role as effectively as possible. Enhancing their understanding of their own practise.

Once the required level of supervision has been determined, it is important to consider the following disciplines in order to ensure safe supervision and to make all other family members aware of them also.
Psychotherapy-based models of supervision often feel like a natural postponement of the therapy itself. “Theoretical coordination informs the observation and selection of clinical data for discussion in supervision as well as the meanings and relevance of those data (Falender & Shafaanske, 2008). I feel that this model utilize psychotherapy theory to apply similar techniques used with clients in the supervision setting, as a supervisor I would put emphasis on the importance of client-clinician, and clinician-supervisor relationship.
Supervisors’ provide effective formative and summative feedback, promote growth and self-assessment in the trainee, and they also have to be able to conduct their own self-assessment. These skills encourage the trainee in the process of supervising. Clinical supervision is defined as: “An intervention that is provided by a senior member of a profession to a junior member or members of that profession. This relationship is evaluative, extends over time and has simultaneous purposes of enhancing the professional functioning of the junior member(s), monitoring the quality of professional services offered to the clients she, he or they see(s) and serving as a gatekeeper for those who are to enter the particular profession” (Bernard & Goodyear,
Thanks Vanessa, you did a great job defining the role and use of supervision. I did not know if you noticed that Our Lady of the Lake mission’s statement is in perfect line with the social worker code of ethics. I would like to share what I found in similarity with our mission statement. According to the National Association of Social Work (2010), the mission of the social work profession is rooted in a set of core values. These core values, embraced by social workers throughout the professions’ history, are foundation of social work’s unique purpose and perspective. Service, Social justice, Dignity, Dignity and worth of the person, Importance of human relationships, Integrity, and Competence. This constellation of core values reflects what is unique to the social work profession. According to Kiser (2012) the field supervisor is key to student learning in any human services internship. Ideally, supervisory relationships are based on trust and mutual understanding. Great job and good luck.
Therefore, the definition of counselling supervision according to counsellingresource.com (2014) is a counsellor or psychotherapist that reviews their employee’s work for the beneficial of their client. Also, discusses about their professional and personal development. Supervisor does not act as a boss, but as a consultant who gives the counsellor further guidance about how they could overcome their issues.
By giving direct support to my supervise and their performance, will help the worker to achieve in their role, create job satisfaction, maintain standards, increase positive outcomes and high levels of quality care being delivered to the young people.

Supervisions need to be on-going to be as effective as possible and gives the opportunity to reflect on the development of the staff member. It allows us to reflect and consider outside training for extra support and guidance and the opportunity to refresh skills. Supervisions help build relationships with the individual and improve their quality of work and to give support to their
Another approach to use in the teacher role would to initiate videotaping some sessions. Reviewing his audiotape seems to elicit increased anxiety, by moving to videotaping a session the supervisor could actually observe Michael in the counseling session and could reinforce skills used with the client, build upon strengths and identify challenges to receive additional training in. Using videotape allows for the review of nonverbal communication, client incongruence, or lack of synchrony between the client and the supervisee to be recognized (Erford,2010). This supervision provides increased focus for Michael to receive feedback on his approach while allowing review systematically the delivery of services.
