The importance of being a coach of a team is to encourage teamwork and enhance self-confidence on the pitch, as well as off. The coach is the structural foundation of developing a successful team. The coaching role would include things like helping the team flow as one single unit other than multiple little units, to help increase skill and teamwork and put the players together to create a winning outcome. At their worst, coaches can push the psychological, emotional, and physical limits of their players to the point of deleterious conduct, create a hostile and unfair environment, and turn young athletes away from sports forever. Naturally every coach will need to know a variety of skills that have to do with technique, obtaining omnipotent …show more content…
The first concern with being a coach is where to start with training the players. The coach is to measure skill levels of the individuals, their mentality of the sport, and also, how they interact with each other is key to being a coach. Secondly, the most important role of a coach is to be the role model for his/her players and to be able to have patients and be forthright more often then not. A great place to start coaching is by understanding the dynamics of the team. This is the process of figuring out how team members relate to one another (Understand Team Dynamics). Forming positive relationships with the players and also, the parents to acquire trust and assure the players a comfortable environment would help with understanding dynamics. Gaining positive attitudes from everyone involved will show a growth in skill relationship between the teammates, also the positive attitude will make practices, games, and constructive criticism easier to come by. Having patients with the less skilled is something that every coach needs to have. Individual athletes look to coaches for leadership and encouragement beyond the sports environment, and this also carries over to athletic performance. According to Athletic Insight, the relationship between a coach and a student-athlete determines overall motivation and stress levels (Leadership and Individual Performance). From personal experience, when I had gotten along with a coach, and they were easy to talk to, the practices were more fun to go to, the games were easier and all the players played as one unit. Getting constructive criticism was easy to take and I became very coachable. The coach has more responsibilities than just holding a practice, game, having a plan to the game or practice, but also bringing a friendly and easy environment to be involved in. Coaches can push the psychological, emotional, and physical limits of their players to the point of harm, create
Coaches need to have certain skills and knowledge to undertake the role. In my opinion a coach needs to be patient, supportive, interested, aware of others as well as self, attentive and perceptive. Such elements underpin effective coaching and a genuine interest in the person being coached.
Coaching basketball is about strategizing and directing the movements and actions of a basketball team or individual player. Coaches strategize and scout opposing teams and find ways to defeat them as easily as possible. A successful basketball coach needs to now the understanding of how to play the game. A basketball coach must be able to manage the duties of the job by recruiting the top players, get them in shape, make a team, motivate players and teach them how to play the game of basketball. Coaching is usually done by a single person, with the help of one or more assistants. A coach is the face of the team, helping it achieve the public relations goals of the organization and build a positive image that will improve recruiting. (Edmunds). A coach is responsibiable for setting up and an environment so that the team can use its skills and abilities to their full potential. Therefor a coach has to make a game plan for each game, so that his team will be ready for the next opponent. A coach has to know his team and the opponent abilities to be able to match his team up with the opponent. A coach must know to mix the players who can start right away and players he can develop into starters. A coach may want to put 12-15 players on the roster just in case of injuries. To get ready for the season the coach starts putting in offensive and defensive plays the will run and teach the players situational plays to fit the team style and running practices. During a game a coach has
When I think of coaching I think of practice planning, game planning, scouting strategizing of offense and defense, choosing my starters, little things like that. All of those ideas are valid, but that’s not the whole picture. There is a lot more to coaching than planning for a practice or a game. Many times a person who would like to coach an interschool athletic team has little or no preparation to teach sports skills and techniques. The only qualifications is often the person’s participation on his or her high school, college, or university’s team, coach of a community youth team or even perhaps as a professional player. While all that experience is valuable in one way or another, it does not constitute an adequate preparation for
Coaches – the main role of a coach is to ensure all the players fitness levels. This is important because if a players has low fitness level he will not be performing at his best this can lead to injury and make his team lose. The coach should
Through all of my research, one thing was constant; the single most important thing that a coach can do is build a relationship with their players. When coaches take their time to get to know each and every one of their players, the chances of the athlete respecting and responding to the coach are much greater. Giving the athlete a feeling of belonging, importance, and welcoming will increase their confidence and most likely their level of play as well. In his article, Scales explains how developing positive relationships results in athletes not only with better athletic ability, but also with better emotional control, social skills, and connection to school and community (20). One of the most important characteristics of having a relationship with the athlete is caring for them. Florida Tech swim coach thinks the most important
A person must have specific knowledge of the sport they desire to coach, because they have many duties that come with their job. “One of the main duties of the Coach is to put together a team of the best athletes available in the specific sport” (Field, 2012, p.115). Coaches and athletes both want to be successful. This is why one of the main duties of a coach is to pick the top players out of high school. It is hard to be successful if a team does not have the proper athletes. A coach’s duties will vary depending on the size of the school. At a small school a college coach could be responsible for not only coaching but also recruiting, scouting, finance of the team, and much more, while at a larger school a coach may have their own departments for each of those duties. The main focus of a college coach is to prepare his or her players
Having a coach in life will positively influence your character and your skills. Also, having a coach doesn’t necessarily mean that your playing on a field. A coach can be anyone from a role model to a parent or guardian, a teacher, a pastor, a mentor, or sometimes even a best friend. One of the most important things for a coach to have is influence, and more important than that is that the influence he has on his players must be positive. As a leader, a coaches job is to better his players on and off of the field. This is done by developing the character of his players through encouragement and helping them understand that the game is more than just about winning. A good coach will always put the needs of his players first before he considers himself as a factor. If a coach is successful his players will develop a strong sense of self-motivation. This helps by allowing the player to
A Coach is somebody who develops, improves or promotes changes in a persons ability and understanding. Coaches work with another person or a group of people and develops them as people using sport to progress them in their development. All coaches have certain responsibilities towards performers, their sport, their profession and themselves. Below I have identified what a coach may be required to fulfil.
When someone is first introduced to coaching it is important that the coach gives an overview of the coaching process and the role of a coach within this. It is important to set the ground rules and all both parties to meet expectations set.
The coach will portray that mistakes are not acceptable and the athletes should make as little mistakes as possible. The coach will also show that he/she does not have patience for the athletes that cannot pick up the skills quickly. The coach will condition them if they make mistakes. The coach will have a very loud strong voice, demanding, and intimidating attitude. The coach will enforce fundamentals and skills that the athlete will need to be successful in the sport.
There are fundamental personal qualities, coaching competencies and skills that are needed to become a good coach.
Has there ever been a basketball game when the coach calls a timeout or a play that could work in that situation. As the coach you could change that situation by talking to the players and talking to the assistant coach to call the right play at the right moment. Also, there are possibilities of moving up in the ranks of coaching. Coaching can be a very rewarding cause.
Overcoming the fact that one day you will not be able to play your sport is one of the hardest things all athletes must one day go through. It is a fact of the game that one day your eligibility runs out or if you are one of the lucky few who play professionally, your body’s years of health do not last forever. Coaching just to be around the sport and spread the joy that sport gave you for so many years. My coaching philosophy relies extremely heavily on this information. I have always been a person who is passionate about the things I love because I do not believe in not putting your whole heart into something. The most critical component to success in whatever sport you love lies in honoring the game that so many before you loved and excelled at. Excelling and honoring the game means having respect for everyone involved with the sport. Giving respect to your coaches is something I learned from the beginning. Being respectful and having a positive attitude learned at a young age is something completely taken for granted until you have adults who can neither adapt nor be flexible when something does not go their way. Sport is a form of education in that it teaches you similar life lessons that will be useful for far longer than the amount of time that you spend actually playing it.
Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching. Some questions would include: Why did he choose this as a profession? How did he get into coaching? What does one have to do to get a job as a coach? How
My topic is similar to yours. I have always been intrigued to examine the relationship between coach and athlete. In my experience, I have found coaches who provide positive support and are constructive with their criticism are more enjoyable to play for and give the athlete a more positive experience. Coaches that come across as condescending seem to push kids away from the game. It is important that the student-athlete has a positive experience, especially student-athletes at a young age. I feel if a student-athlete has a negative experience at the interscholastic level he or she will be less likely to stick with the sport.
