Throughout the spring semester each year, college students begin to plan for their summer months off. For some, this is planning family vacations or trips to the beach with friends; however, for others it is cleaning up cover folders, updating resumes, and filling out applications for an opportunity that is highly competitive and sometimes difficult to find: an internship. Although some argue that internships are unfair because students are essentially working a real job without receiving the money and benefits that the employees receive, internships are able to provide developing students with an invaluable educational opportunity.
Internships give students a chance to try out their prospective career before graduation. With this, they are given the opportunity to observe the working “real world” before they are placed in it completely on their own. According to the debate Are Internships Fair to Students, “Students are able to learn professional standards and get a true sense of the day to day experience of a particular job or corporate culture” (Debate 582). This helps students realize what is expected of them when they begin their career, making the first few months on the job less stressful. Additionally, Internships give prospective students the opportunity for hands-on work. Rather than learning while sitting in a classroom each day, the situation is put in context.
