Biopure Corporation: Case Write-Up Problem Definition In February 1998 Biopure Corporation faced a difficult decision regarding the launch of its newly developed “blood substitute” products. Biopure had developed “Hemopure”, a blood substitute for humans, and an ancillary product “Oxyglobin” for the veterinary market1. Hemopure was still in the process of gaining Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approval , while Oxyglobin had already been approved and was ready to be launched1. FDA approval was estimated to be two years away2, but this could change as the approval process is inherently complex and uncertain. The main problem Biopure faced was whether to launch Oxyglobin now, or wait until Hemopure was approved and launch both products …show more content…
When considering the marketing mix we must look at the various products in the portfolio of Biopure. There is a dilemma because one of Biopure’s products is approved and the other is not. The impact of deciding to launch Oxyglobin initially and having to wait to release Hemopure has an impact on the overall financial situation of the company as well as its competitive position within the market. The other challenge that Biopure had is to decide how to price Oxyglobin should they release it to the market. If Biopure adopts competition-based pricing111 as suggested by some of the sales team, the price sensitive nature of the veterinary market means that a price of $80-$100 per unit is considered to be optimal4. Despite this, research shows that Biopure can adopt a customer-based approach, or value based pricing111. In critical cases, vets are willing to pay up to $150 per unit 80% of the time and pet owners are willing to pay up to $300/unit 75% of the time12. This research suggests a higher price point might be more

Scenario 1: You are the healthcare administrator of a nursing home. You are informed by your Admissions Director that a new memory-impaired resident has been admitted into your long-term care unit. The staff is concerned about the involvement of family with your resident. Family members from out-of-town arrived and expressed concern about your resident’s do not resuscitate (DNR) orders which were authorized by the Power of Attorney of another family member. A quarrel erupts in the nursing home with family members voicing their opinions loudly. You arrive on the scene and are immediately told by the visiting family member, “Do you know who I am? I am a supervisor for the Department of Health and Human Services and will not hesitate to have your facility surveyed for noncompliance.” What do you do?
Comparing these potential market size, we can easily observe that Oxyglobin is roughly two times as profitable as Hemopure. Accordingly, Biopure should take these data into account to evaluate whether or not to launch Oxyglobin immediately. On the other hand, this revenue expectation is not so realistic. In fact, it is almost impossible that the company will capture the whole potential markets because of its small production capacity. This latter represents the main obstacle to a potential success of Biopure in both animal and human
In our experience with Pharmasim we learned that Marketing decision making must be very sensitive and responsive to everything going on in the industry which is very complex. Consumer responses to marketing tactics can be volatile and unpredictable and no idea is guaranteed to work well. Marketing is a matter of meticulous research, assumptions, planning, and volatility at times. Overall we took away two major points: 1) that it is important to consider the product lifecycle in evaluating how to promote businesses and, 2) that the “Sweet Spot” as a competitive advantage should be the greatest point of consideration when evaluating how to best gain leverage to beat the competition in the minds of

The court deciphering between criminal negligence and recklessness. Criminal negligence being a person failing to perceive a substantial and unjustifiable risk that the result will occur or that the circumstance exists. The risk must be of such nature and degree that the failure to perceive it constitutes a gross deviation from the standard of care that a reasonable person would observe in the situation.

Prescription drug prices are on the rise in the United States. Currently, the United States does not implement a price control on prescription drugs. Every day the supply and demand for prescription drugs fluctuates. Pharmaceutical companies produce drugs that are necessary for survival. Therefore, it is necessary for research and development to continue in the United States. Those suffering the effects of exorbitant prices must do so until a generic form of a prescription drug is produced. Once approved by the FDA, new drugs will make their appearance on the market and patients will no longer suffer financially. Until then, it is necessary for pharmaceutical companies to price their drugs based on the idea of supply and demand. This produces the profit used to fund research. Price controls discourage innovation. If a price control were set in place, of course the price of prescription drugs would decrease. However, the development of new drugs decreases with it. Today’s generation would benefit from lower prices, while future generations would suffer from the loss of drug innovation.

The MSRP for Allround suggested retail was $5.29, according to the PharmaSim case study, “The manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for Allround is relatively high with volume discounts ranging from 25–40%, not including promotional allowances”. Our pricing decision for the PharmaSim simulation we felt was important because consumers have alternatives to choose from and are better informed. Our initial retail price of $5.45 was an increase from the suggested retail of $5.29 to adjust with inflation rate of 3.1%, which boost sales from $355.3 million to $434 million totaling $78.7 million in sales growth. We purchased survey data to help establish the price. Consumers perceived our product being the most effective in cold relief which allowed Allstar to raise the price incrementally and consumers were still willing to purchase the product.
