Increasingly, the trend in companies is to be actively engaged in corporate social initiatives with community involvement. Multinationals like Microsoft, BP, and McDonalds have come to appreciate the benefits reaped from successful integration of corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts into their core business units, which serve as a powerful competitive edge over other companies. In the following sections, the group will outline and analyze the various environmental, social and community efforts taken by The Body Shop International as well as The Body Shop Singapore and Asia Pacific, which we group under the five core values stated by The Body Shop. 1. Against Animal Testing The Body Shop operates on a strict purchasing rule that ensures they do not buy any ingredient that has been animal tested for cosmetic purposes by their suppliers since 31 December 1990. The Body Shop informs the public and campaigns to ban cosmetics tests on animals. Instead of testing on animals, The Body Shop supports the use and development of alternative technologies like Irritection, a replacement for the rabbit eye test, and human volunteer trials such as skin patch tests assists The Body Shop in ensuring safety and efficacy.
In 1986, The Body Shop launched its first window campaign in support of the Greenpeace campaign, Save the Whale. Since then, The Body Shop has actively undertaken several campaigns to protect endangered species. In 1990, The Body Shop raised public awareness against animal testing through its series of campaigns. In 1995, The Body Shop became the first cosmetic company to have their Against Animal Testing supplier-monitoring systems independently audited and successfully certified against the ISO9002 quality assurance standard. Cruelty-free cosmetic brands are an advancement that will better the safety of animals and people. To exemplify, the Sydney Morning Herald states that, “It’s very difficult to work out the health hazards of synthetic hair dyes, sunscreens and preservatives using animal tests” (Page 1). Products used on animals will get different outcomes compared to humans. A product that is made for a human needs to be tested on a human to get accurate results. Testing products on an animal can have certain chemicals that humans can withstand while it can harm the animal. People do not go around using animal products on themselves because of the reactions they can get from them. Many people might say that animal testing has proven results for the safety of beauty products and cosmetics. Although, in some cases it is helpful, why would you want to use such an old outdated method of research in 2017 many more methods have opened up due to advanced technology. Animal testing dates back to the 1900’s and yet in the 21st-century companies are still doing this even though it is more costly than alternative methods.
Many of America’s favorite go-to skin care products and cosmetics are tested on animals. Despite that, there are products on the market that use alternative testing procedures yet are still considered safe and effective. In the article titled Animal Testing on Cosmetics written by author Ian Murnaghan, the controversy of animal testing in cosmetics is referred to when he says, “The practice is particularly controversial because animals may experience discomfort, suffering and ultimately die, all in the name of aesthetics and 'looking good.’”. Much of what he says in this quote can be applied to extremely popular cosmetic brands like Sephora , Almay, and Revlon who all use animal testing to build their products to maximum use. I have been in the past blind to the issue of animal-testing, yet since choosing to use only cruelty-free brands have been forced to conduct research into the world of animal testing; since researching on the internet cruelty-free brands I have become more and more convinced that I’ve made the right choice as various websites highlight both the benefits as a consumer buying cruelty free and the unseen atrocities of behind the scenes animal testing. I feel passionate that the practice of cosmetic testing on animals is both immoral and unethical and believe that as an often overlooked epidemic of questionable ethics we should all be doing our part to stop it.

Over the course of many years, makeup has been an important part of society. Not only is it used for beauty, but also as a form of self-expression. Popular makeup brands such as Maybelline, Covergirl, and MAC are frequently advertised on TV, featuring celebrities to promote their latest lip products. At the same time, consumers are not aware of what happens inside the laboratories that make them. Every year, the U.S. Government spends billions of dollars on animal testing for cosmetics–but those animals in the lab are suffering, even when there are already more humane alternative ways to test these products.

Every day we wake up and start our daily routine; we shower, apply cosmetics or just wash their faces, brush our teeth and rush out the door. There are very few people who realize that the brand of their cleaning products and especially their makeup maybe involved in cosmetics animal testing. Corporate social responsibility has been one the key business buzz words of the 21st century. Consumers' discontent with the corporation has forced it to try and rectify its negative image by associating its name with good deeds. Social responsibility has become one of the corporation's most pressing issues, each company striving to outdo the next with its philanthropic image. Much of the drive of The Body Shop comes from its values system, and is summarized in the Values Report. The company believes it "has a moral responsibility to be open and honest about what it does, and face up things which need to be improved." In this report the company reviews all actions it takes in the social, political and environmental arenas, and proposes possible actions for the future. The company issues a value report every two to three years, the last one being published in 1997. This report was hailed as trailblazing by UNEP (the United Nations Environmental Programme), received the institution 's top award for social and environmental reporting. The Values Report is divided into three sections, which outline the basic was the company views its responsibilities: the environmental audit, the animal protection audit and the social audit.
The requirement of testing makeup products has caused makeup companies to rely on animals to be used as test subjects. This reliance has resulted in many animals being damaged, resulting in a loss of consumers. Instead of settling with the traditional practices, makeup companies should look into skin alternatives to testing on animals.
