When looking at the shift from the two eras, I think Boyz II Men plays a good middleman. As an artist who played in both eras, Boyz II Men’s music provides us with a looking glass to see not only the change in the genre as a whole, but also the changing of his music as the eras shift. Today, Boyz II Men are one of the last harmonizing R&B groups still left in the genre today, which is unknown to many people, including me, who frequently listens to the genre. For most music lovers, Boyz II Men’s songs like “I’ll Make Love To You” and “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye” were well known songs that presented the music of the 90s. It was harmonized together, it was soulful in nature, it provided deep reflection into the words of the song, and the music
Music as a whole blends together. One style leads to another, the music becomes more progressive. It evolves to fit the new generation, leaving the old generation behind. From the spritual songs of the late 1800s to the gospel of the early 1900s. Then it changed into rhythm and blues, and when the 1950s rolled around it became Rock’ n’ Roll. With the invention of new iconic instruments like the Fender Precision Bass and then the Fender Stratocaster, the sound of the music changed. The sound that was soft and low was now crunchy and loud. While it did not sit well with the adults, it was a hit among the new generation. Even the African American roots of the music didn’t deter the youth listening
Rock n Roll was everything the suburban 1950’s were not. While parents of the decade were listening to Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, and the Big Bands. Their children were moving on to a new beat.” (U.S. History) Teenagers started to like this new type of music called rock and roll. It became very popular and artists started to experiment with it which influenced the development of rock n roll throughout the 50’s and 60’s. The experimentation with rock n roll changed music forever and greatly influenced our music today. Rock n roll was mixed with country, rhythm, and blues when this combination happened rock n roll kept developing through the fifties and sixties.
Rock ‘n’ roll music has widely influenced music and society and continues to do so today. Rock ‘n’ roll emerged in the 1950’s a time where whites and blacks were heavily segregated. Rock and roll music not only changed the nation’s current musical norms, but indicated the joy of the emerging youth culture of the generation. It influenced artists whether black or white to come into the mainstream music. Famous artists still remembered today also influenced rock and roll. Those pioneers helped change the musical norms and the overall history of music. White rock ‘n’ rollers helped build a ladder for black artists to come into the scene. It was certain that rock ‘n’ roll made it possible for greater acceptance, appreciation and a wider
The birth of R&B was created by African American in the early 1960’s from Soul music, Jazz, Gospel, Pop music and Blues as time went on R&B was born. In its earlier days, R&B Music was all about racial issues, and artists gave a lot of importance to the style and arrangement, which included different instruments and rhythms to produce different types of sounds. The result was live music that had catchy lyrics and was widely used in dance
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience on how expansive R&B music is and how R&B is constantly changing as time progresses.
A lot of the invasion stayed in that generation, many bands and songs that were big then are all but totally forgotten about now. Bands such as the Searchers, the Swinging Blue Jeans, and Gerry and the Pacemakers all had one or two great hits which stayed in that time. This however, was part of the beauty of it all. Some of the music stayed with us thirty years later, and that's great, it gives us a good sampling of the time. On the other hand, you have the music that was meant for the era, and not for future generations. That is part of the uniqueness of it all, and Lester Bangs says it best when he tells how it doesn't matter that the music isn't listened to anymore, that's not what it was for. It was for the time, it was a "timepiece".
Want to look back and see how much Hip hop has changed over the years? Hop in your car, turn on the radio and tune into 103.5 or 102.5 then tune into 101.1, feel old yet? Well thats because you are, and if you didn’t do what I said, or even care, the radio station 101.1 plays hip hop and Rnb hits from the 90’s and the early 00’s. If you compare the sound, lyrics, and even the style of music, the difference are quite drastic. But listen closely to the stations because the contrasts are quite telling of the standards of music in our current times.
Hip-Hop has changed over the decades some of these decades include the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. Hip-Hop came from New York, few people knew about Hip-Hop when it was first being created in the late 1970s. Hip-hop did not really emerge until the 1980s when more Hip-Hop artist recorded and released more music. The 1990s came along Hip-Hop turned more vulgar which is also my favorite Hip-Hop era. The early 2000s is the most memorable. Hip-Hop has evolved into many forms some rock bands have even done a Hip-Hop album bands like the most memorable. Hip-Hop has evolved into different forms some rock bands have even done a Hip-Hop album bands like Limp Bizkit.
The transition from the multicultural era of the eighties to the postnetwork era of the nineties triggered abrupt changes in American media and culture. [6] From fashions to family life, relationships, and attitudes, many new cultural elements subsequently changed television portrayals of ordinary American culture within this time period. More specifically, the culture of the eighties is often characterized by the rise of MTV and megastars, techno music and club drugs, and popular fashions such as leather, leggings, and Ray Bans. Eighties culture can be described as the ‘bombdigity’ and nineties culture can be described as more toned down, moral, and ‘sweet’.
separation. Rock and roll music was formerly made up of only whites, but gradually African-Americans moved into that genre of music. This is a good thing for racial equality, except for when you look at the other types of dominant music today, rap and rhythm and blues. There is almost no white singers in these entire styles of music. On MTV, there has been only two white rap singers in the history of the channel, and one of them, Enimem,
Crossovers between genres and time periods in music have been happening quite a long time with composers of the classical period having done similar to The Beatles did in those three songs. Even in the middle age period on into the Renaissance composers were obligated to incorporate folk tunes into their choral mass, so similarly in the 18th and 19th centuries there are also origins to the folk music. Some crossovers were done with intent, like the nationalistic composers in order to express their pride in their nation and relate to the people in their nations. A similarity between the old crossovers and the ones The Beatles did is that once the artist/composer did a crossover the way people viewed the style changed from how they had seen
Many artists created a new form of music through the influence of the black artists. The first signs of this influence appeared in the music of Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly. It carried on to artists like Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and various other musicians.4 A new form of music emerged, rock and roll. This new style of music was fueled by emotion. One of the first stages in the development of rock and roll was sacrificing musical complexity for the sake of capturing an audience. The jazz and blues songs that were popular before rock and roll emerged, consisted of several chords and elaborate rhythms, while rock and roll songs are comprised of only three or four chords and very simple rhythms.5 More direct expressions of emotions were used, and lyrics of personal and political significance were brought into the mix. The relationship between artists and their audiences changed. Fans related to the musicians’ opinions rather than simply the style of the music. As a result of the bold lyrics, a general respect for musicians
Rock music has come a long way since its development in the early 20th century. The genre, defined “as a merger between rhythm&blues and country” (Scaruffi, The History of Rock Music:1955-1966), started out more as an underground market, but ended up becoming a significant aspect of American popular music history. Rock-n-Roll music produce many legendary artists who will for ever be known as innovators of the genre. Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry were some of the many artists in Rock-n-Roll who will always live on in their music. Many teenagers were also to identify it due to its rebellious nature their disapproval of the cold war. Towards the end of the 1950s, Rock-n-Roll was ending on a particularly bad note, with a brief decline:
R&B and Hip Hop music has definitely changed over the years. It is now very degrading to women, less subtle, and a bad influence on people. Music used to motivate people and teach them how to treat women right. Now music tells people how to talk down to women and have power over them. Songs used to talk about sex before but in a way where it was not as noticeable; but now it is very common to sing or rap about one’s sexual fantasies. Many songs now only
"Lovers Dark Past" The 1990s were defined as the rise of multiculturalism and alternative media. Movements like hip hop, and alternative rock would become popular across the world for young people for the next decade. Technology such as cable television and the internet would also become revolutionary. Also, in the 1990s female roles began to grow and the gender roles began to change.
