I knew nothing about the book except its amazing title and distinct description. I have read many bullying stories, but this one seemed to stand out more compared to most stories. I wanted to read this story because it had something that interested me greatly, on the back Lucy stated that “to feel that more than anything else we want to be loved for who we are, while wishing desperately and secretly to be perfect” I found this quote quite unique in contrast to other books in this genre which intrigued me greatly.
. I am interested in this topic because I feel like I can relate to the main character, Jodee and what she goes through. 3. The purpose of reading this book is to understand what it is like to be bullied, an outcast and the effects of getting picked on and shut out. People, especially teenagers, should read this book to understand what kids go through, and what they could be doing to their fellow peers and how bad it really is to be bullied.
There are many different types of people. Some people are mean, confident, happy, mad, or weak. However, everyone has a soft side. In the song “Mean” it explains how you feel when you get bullied. In the song “Mean”, the bullies do not show their soft side. Instead, they show their tough side. Even people who you would not think have a soft side, still do. That is because some people look tough on the outside but are not always as tough on the inside. In fact, some people act differently— as if they are wearing a hoodie that changes depending on whether they are alone or in a group. This hoodie changes depending on who they are with. It can show others their tough side and can alter how they interact with others. An example, of someone who wears a hoodie is Squeaky from the short story, “Raymond’s Run”, written by Toni Cade Bambara. This story takes place in Harlem during the 1960’s. The main character Squeaky wears a hoodie because she does not identify with gender stereotypes at this time, when people thought girls had to be girly and wear dresses. However, Squeaky is not like other girls. Squeaky loves to run and she does not like to wear dresses. She is tougher than regular girls

According to the article “Tales of Bullying,” students can become a bad bully because you might have your own group of friends you want to impress or try to show off for, or you might have something going on at home.
