Has someone ever made fun of you, made you feel stupid, or made you feel bad about yourself? If yes, then you have been a victim of bullying. Bullying can diminish the mental and/or physical health of bullied individuals. This epidemic happens every day, yet nothing is trying to stop it. If no one addresses the problem, then it will continue to be a problem. Yes, there are programs trying to prevent bullying, but who is to say that people are listening? Even with all of the bully prevention programs, bullying is still not being addressed properly because it is still prevalent in causing negative impacts on one’s mental and physical health and can lead to suicidal thoughts. Bullying is typically defined as unwanted, aggressive behavior usually …show more content…
It can scar the victim emotionally and scar them physically. Pushing, shoving, hitting, and other assaults that can lead to serious injury are just some examples of physical abuse. Because boys are more aggressive then girls, physical bullying is more common among them (Levine and Tamburrino 272). Boys want to prove their “manliness” and strength to their peers so that ultimately leads to them bullying on kids who are weaker and cannot fight back. Most boys have no problem with being physical if it means showing off to their friends. Physical bullying may not always happen just to show to their peers, it may derive from physical abuse at home. Maybe the bully is getting abused or a parent is abusing the other. It is easy for adults to abuse children because they are bigger and stronger than children. In The Bluest Eye, by Toni Morrison, Pecola’s mother beats her multiple times because Pecola was weaker than her. Since children often see their parents as role models, if there is physical abuse at home, the bully may see that behavior as “normal” and physically abuses others. Either way, physical bullying can diminish a person’s mental and physical …show more content…
Many females experience sexual harassment during school, either by other students or teachers. This act causes a great deal of mental and physical anxiety to women. Many girls who experience sexual harassment at school sometimes refuse to attend school just to escape the harassment. Not only is their attendance at school low but so are their academic achievements. Women who are sexually bullied tend to have lower grades than other students. When girls in school try to report sexual harassment from a male student to their parents, they might tell their daughter that “he’s just messing with you because he likes you”. When the girl goes back to school, she might just accept the harassment because “he likes her”. In the novel, The Bluest Eye, by Toni Morrison, Pecola’s mother finds herself in an abusive relationship with her husband. Morrison writes, “ ‘Cholly commenced to getting meaner and meaner and wanted to fight me all of the time’ ’” (Morrison 118). This is how many women enter sexually abusive relationships; they believe they are being treated the way they are because “he loves me”, which is not the
Physical bullying is a serious problem, affecting not only the bully and the victim, but other people who witness it. For example, according to (www.stopbullying.gov/what-is-bullying) says that "physical bullying
For girls being a victim of a violent crime was an over 10-fold risk factor for being a bully-victim.” Also, “Girls were more likely to be bullies than boys,” after witnessing a violent crime such as domestic violence. To wrap the results up, “Being a victim of a violent crime outside home and physical abuse by parents at home, girls were significantly more often bully-victims than boys.” (Mustanja, Luukkonen, Hakko, Rasanen, Saavala, Riala 495)
Some reasons why children might bully someone include, thinking it might be fun or that it makes them feel popular or cool. They might feel insecure or they might have a lack of confidence or are trying to fit in with a group. In 2004 a study of bullying behaviors in 5,749 boys and girls, showed that overweight and obese school-aged children were more likely to be the victims and offenders of bullying behaviors than their normal-weight peers. Stereotypically, both male and female children report bullies making fun of the way they look, dress or talk. (Espelage, Dorothy L., and Susan M. Swearer. 2004.) However, males are more likely to report being physically harmed through punching or kicking, whereas girls are more likely to be left out,
I will start by describing the biological dimensions of bullying victims, perpetrators, and bully-victims. Carpanzo et al. (2011) asserts that there are gender differences in bullying. While both biological genders participate equally in relational and physical aggression according to the study, physical aggression is more common in boys but relational aggression is equal between the sexes. Bullying was more stable across a two-year period and weighed more heavily on individual personality characteristics with the males in the study and girls were more influenced into participating in bullying behavior by social norms. A study by Fu et al. (2012) examined bullying victimization in twelfth graders between 1989 and 2009. The study aimed to find repetitive risk factors concerning socioeconomic status and behavioral characteristics. The result of the study
In yesterday’s society, bullying was most common in boys, whether it be that the boy is the bully or the victim. However, the percentage of girls that are victimized or are bullying others is increasing daily. This is due to social media, behavior patterns and newly defined gender roles society has taken on to a new level. The definition of bullying is changing as well, it is not simply to physically abuse a victim but to harm them in a way. This includes physically and mentally whether it be through someone's words or through online interactions. (Include Study)
Bullying Ruins People’s lives. Physical Bullying is any type of physical violence, big or small. Physical bullying is actually beating the person. Being bullied is a Depression that causes a person to have feelings sad and lonely, they may have sleep changes and may lose their appetite, and loss of interest in activities they love. Younger kids in middle school will mess with
A proverb says, “wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it. Right is right even if no one is doing it.” Bullying is a serious problem and it can change a person’s life in so many ways. There are many different types of bullying which includes gender based, verbal, physical and cyber bullying. This is indeed the common types of bullying we hear about in our daily life. Those people who gets bullied and are suffering would do anything to stand up against it. However, at times their voices would not be heard because there are so many complaints. As a result, their depression level and suicidal level will surge dramatically.
Many researches on bullying have found a strong connection between bullying behavior and the gender differences (Hathorn & Harris, 2006).Furthermore it has been evaluated to find out the difference between diverse types of violence in bullying between girls and boys in various grades. For example, several researches have debated that physical bullying is more prevalent in
Many people do not realize how serious bullying has become. If you look at statistics suicides due to bullying have increased over just a few short years. This has become a very big problem for not only the victim but the bully as well as it affect both of them. School bullying is mentally destructive to not only the victims, but bullies because of the harmful words, harassment, and physical violence involved as well as the consequences for the bully.
The impacts of bullying carry similar consequences as those who are victimized by corporal punishment. Victims of these acts are more likely to develop social, emotional, and even physical complications in their lifetimes. These acts can affect a child’s self esteem, social skills and their ability to interact with other children, their level of trust with others, and if the abuse is intense enough, the victim can not only have scratches and bruises, but broken bones as well. Not only are these victims directly influenced by these behaviors, but these violent acts may cause the victim to engage in similar ways towards another individual. This only further exacerbates the problem.
If a student witnesses a group of kids huddled around and teasing a shy girl in their class about the way her hair is braided, that student may try to decide if one should say something. When no one else is getting involved and one does not want to be a new part of their group ridicule, it may give pause. Any pause in this situation is too much time wasted while another child suffers at the hands of bullying.
Were you or someone you know bullied as a child? If so, you probably didn’t say anything. Maybe you didn’t know who to tell or maybe you felt as if no one would do anything to help you. While being bullied already negatively affects you, staying quiet could make things even worse. Not too many people know that bullying can have a lasting long term effect. While some victims suffer for a short time, others suffer for the rest of their lives, and others take their life so that they won’t have to suffer anymore. You need to be aware of the adverse effects that bullying can cause, such as physical, social and mental problems.
Although both secondary and primary sources describe the impact that bullying has on the victim as being negative, there are still differences between them. Natalie, the fifteen-year-old victim, says, “‘Soon I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety. I lost all self-esteem and became paranoid about people’” (Sawer). Depression, anxiety, and the other effects Natalie experienced from bullying are all harmful. She also said she considered suicide and would perform self-harm by doing things like tearing out her hair. The personal side of what bullying can cause a person to do/feel are revealed through what Natalie described. Although not as severe as Natalie, the other bullying victim, Eric, also had a damaging experience with bullying while it was occurring. Eric says, “’I think it's fair to say that bullying never affects the victim positively at a young age. It made me very shy and scared. I always felt like I had to be on guard’” (Goldman). The bullying had a negative impact on Eric’s life while it was occurring. He felt shy and scared which could be averse to his mental and physical health. The perpetrators made both the victims feel desolate. Feeling grim led to short term mental and physical issues such as being fearful and suicidal. The problems that Natalie and Eric faced shows the damaging impact that bullying had on the victim. The personal experience that is discussed is what makes the difference between the primary and the secondary source.
Nowadays, physical bullying is becoming a very serious and detrimental problem. Not only does physical bullying scar the person emotionally, but it can also scar them physically. There are different mediums of physical bullying such as; physical threats, pushing, shoving, and assaults that can cause serious injury. There is some controversy
While some people may not admit it, bullying is a huge problem our world faces today. A U.S. study from the beginning of the 21st century displayed that about 30% of middle schoolers and high schoolers were affected by some kind of bullying. While that might seem like a small percentage, that 30% totals about 5.7 million students. Now that number seems bigger. There are many different types of bullying, such as cyber bullying, which is bullying over the internet and through social media, physical bullying, which is bullying by inflicting bodily harm, verbal bullying, which is bullying through hurtful words, and covert bullying, which is bullying behind someone 's back, like spreading mean rumors and such.
