Has someone ever made fun of you, made you feel stupid, or made you feel bad about yourself? If yes, then you have been a victim of bullying. Bullying can diminish the mental and/or physical health of bullied individuals. This epidemic happens every day, yet nothing is trying to stop it. If no one addresses the problem, then it will continue to be a problem. Yes, there are programs trying to prevent bullying, but who is to say that people are listening? Even with all of the bully prevention programs, bullying is still not being addressed properly because it is still prevalent in causing negative impacts on one’s mental and physical health and can lead to suicidal thoughts. It can scar the victim emotionally and scar them physically. Pushing, shoving, hitting, and other assaults that can lead to serious injury are just some examples of physical abuse. Because boys are more aggressive then girls, physical bullying is more common among them (Levine and Tamburrino 272). Boys want to prove their “manliness” and strength to their peers so that ultimately leads to them bullying on kids who are weaker and cannot fight back. Most boys have no problem with being physical if it means showing off to their friends. Physical bullying may not always happen just to show to their peers, it may derive from physical abuse at home. Maybe the bully is getting abused or a parent is abusing the other. It is easy for adults to abuse children because they are bigger and stronger than children. In The Bluest Eye, by Toni Morrison, Pecola’s mother beats her multiple times because Pecola was weaker than her. Since children often see their parents as role models, if there is physical abuse at home, the bully may see that behavior as “normal” and physically abuses others. Many females experience sexual harassment during school, either by other students or teachers. This act causes a great deal of mental and physical anxiety to women. Many girls who experience sexual harassment at school sometimes refuse to attend school just to escape the harassment. Not only is their attendance at school low but so are their academic achievements. Women who are sexually bullied tend to have lower grades than other students. When girls in school try to report sexual harassment from a male student to their parents, they might tell their daughter that “he’s just messing with you because he likes you”. When the girl goes back to school, she might just accept the harassment because “he likes her”. In the novel, The Bluest Eye, by Toni Morrison, Pecola’s mother finds herself in an abusive relationship with her husband. Morrison writes, “ ‘Cholly commenced to getting meaner and meaner and wanted to fight me all of the time’ ’” (Morrison 118).
