Most foods that are bought at the neighborhood grocery stores are considered global foods which are packed with additives and chemicals making them far less nutritious than local produce from the community farmer‘s market. After much research, I have concluded that it is better to buy produce which is grown locally rather than produce which is sourced globally (from other countries). I think this is important because most people, like myself, buy global foods and do not realize how much better local foods are for the local economy, the global environment, and our personal nutrition. Toddlers are transitioning from their eating habits as an infant to eating the kinds of foods an adult would. (kids health). The amount food that is giving to a toddler when they first start eating solids will influence their development from then into adulthood. (more research) The amount of fruit and veggies a toddler eat can affect their development and health like in adults. Fruits and vegetables are important for a toddler’s diet. According to the 2009 Food Pyramid, it states that “fruits and vegetables contain many essential nutrients, including potassium, dietary fiber, folate (folic acid), vitamin A, vitamin E, and vitamin C.”(mypyramid.com) Each of these has their own role in aiding the toddler’s development and growth such as maintaining a healthy blood pressure, proper bowel function, help form red blood cells, healthy immune system, and strong bones (pyramid.com). Oils and Fats; For children under two years need a diet with more fat and less fibre then older children. Fat provides extra energy need at this stage of development, too much fibre will fill young children up and other more important nutrients may be left out. It's recommend not to give children processed foods as they contain high levels of saturated fats.
Children and young people’s health and development is closely linked to their dietary choice as they need the right amount of nutrients necessary to keep their energy and to maintain the body for growth, tissue repair, healthy skin, hair and teeth, red blood cells and strong immune system.
When working in a nursery you have to be aware that all the children’s nutritional requirements as well as making sure that these are being met. What this means is that we should always ensure that we are providing them with a balanced and diverse diet which meets the governments guidelines. We should provide children with a diet that is based around the Eat Well Plate this consists on Carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, rice etc. Dairy, like Cheese, Milk, Butter, Protein such as Chicken, Beef, Turkey, etc. Fruit and Vegetables and finally Fats the portion size for fat is much more smaller then all of the other areas on the plate as there not that good for our bodies and they don’t really of offer many nutritional benefits and they can sometimes
Many children lack micronutrients, vitamins and minerals. Fresh food is their best source of nutrition. Children who eat vegetables and less fried food gain bone mass but not fat. Allergies can affect the nutritional state of a child, if they are not receiving the correct nutrients. Some children, normally under the age of six, insist on eating foods prepared and presented in certain ways only. This concept is known as “just right.” At middle childhood or between the ages of six to eleven, there is slower growth than during early childhood, yet the threat of obesity is still
Toddlers will get more amounts of nutrients and energy if their diet is based on food from the five food groups. Giving a toddler 6-8 drinks a day increases their hydration. The best type of drink to give your child between meals is milk and water. Large quantities if juice can reduce your child 's appetite or cause loose stools. Some foods can cause harm to your child. Sugary, acidic drinks, and fruit juices can cause tooth decay if it is drunken frequently. Raw eggs or raw shellfish can cause food poisoning. Society must educate itself on what type of food is healthy such as fresh or fresh frozen vegetables, lean meats, whole grains and fruits. Parents should take the time to explain what these are and why they are important, educating themselves if necessary. Families can also extend this education to a hands-on experience but starting a small vegetable garden which produces some of the vegetables they eat. Author and farmer, Sharon Astyk, and sustainable systems land planner, Aaron Newton, argue that people need to take back the control of the food selection and prices by growing their own or purchasing directly from local farmers. In their article, “The Rich Get Richer: the Poor Go Hungry”, Astyk and Newton (2015) write, “When we grow our own food, or buy it directly from local farmers, we take power away from multinationals” (p.518). I agree that society should become more involved and self-sustaining pertaining to food to retain independence from companies that are loyal to shareholders. This education will provide the current and future generations necessary resources to make improved food choices, thereby reducing the obesity and diabetes epidemics gripping our nation.
In spite of all of these facts, there are issues that affect the growth and development of toddlers. Three common issues are medical problems: nutrition, stimulation, and interaction. An example of a nutritional issue is malnutrition. Malnutrition is a condition that can cause anemia and increase susceptibility to infections (Beth Greenwood, 2014).
