When someone says the word “disease” or “illness” the most common association with these words are Cancer. Cancer is so frighteningly common that it is expected by The American Cancer Society to have 564,800 people die of cancer this year which is a little more than 1,500 people a day. Cancer is the second leading cause of death. With these statistics to back up Cancer one will see walks supporting cancer, media discussing possible new found cures, nfl football players wearing pink to support breast cancer awareness, the Susan G. Komen foundation and so many other big foundations raising millions of dollars towards a cure. Where are the walks or large foundations to raise awareness of diseases for psychosis such as Schizophrenia? Schizophrenia
In the United States, many times mental illnesses are not taken seriously or taken in consideration at all. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines schizophrenia as “a mental disorder that is characterized by disturbances in thought (such as delusions), perception (such as hallucinations), and behavior (such as disorganized speech or catatonic behavior), by a loss of emotional responsiveness and extreme apathy, and by noticeable deterioration in the level of functioning in everyday life.” Schizophrenia affects a person’s ability to think, feel, and behave appropriately. Many people belittle mental illnesses, like schizophrenia, because they do not understand all the struggles these individuals go through, therefore, I believe this is a concept worth discussing about.
Atrial Fibrillation is one of the leading causes of death across the globe. (1) AF increases an individual’s risk of stroke by 4 to 6 times on average. (2)(3) The risk increases with age, in people older than 80 years old; AF is the straight cause of 1 in 4 strokes. (3) Even though Atrial Fibrillation can be considered a mild arrhythmia; it is still associated with serious morbidity and mortality. (4)(5) First, it raises the risk of having thromboembolism and stroke, due to blood stasis in the left atrium. Stroke is commonly caused by a thrombus or clot. In patients with AF, the thrombus or clot is usually comes from the left atrial appendage (a small sac in the left upper chamber of the heart). Because stroke in AF patients may be particularly distressing, it is quite important to identify patients who are possibly at high risk before it occurs to them. Second, the irregularly irregular heart beat can cause symptoms palpitations, shortness of breath, anxiety and reduced exercise tolerance in the patient, so it requires medical consideration. Third, Atrial Fibrillation causes a lot of cardiac and hemodynamic changes including decreased myocardial systolic function and cardiomyopathy caused by tachycardia. (6)(7) Sometimes AF is identified only with the onset of a stroke or a transient ischemic attack (TIA or "mini-stroke"). (8) Whether if it is asymptomatic or symptomatic, AF is a progressive disease, worsening with time and it is accounting for
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women. Breast Cancer was first discovered more than 3,500 years ago, surgery was an available option is the mid-19th century. Many procedures were available in the 1990’s and early detection without technology because of visible symptoms. Breast Cancer rate has decreased thirty four percent since the 1990’s. Breast cancer doesn’t just affect women but as well. .01% of men are diagnosed with breast cancer.
Lung Cancer. Two words that nobody wants to hear. A dreadful and frightening disease that can seriously injure a human being. A horrible disease that can kill somebody that doesn’t deserve such a thing. “Lung cancer is a serious health problem that
Obesity is the second leading cause of death in the world. It also the causes diseases such as type two diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke. Obesity can cause ability to move around issues. For example, a person’s weight that has gotten so out of control that the person cannot walk from one end of the house to the other without needing to rest or cannot even get out of their own bed. obesity continue to increase because of fast food restaurants promoting their super-size everything deals, all you can eat buffets, and unlimited food servings that offer high-calorie,
One of the top leading causes of death for people in the age group of 15-24 is accidents (unintentional injuries). When people first get their license, some do not take driving seriously; this puts other people in danger from this kind of behavior. For example, trying to drive fast because you're running late, texting and driving, messing with the radio or air conditioning, or even eating and driving. Many people who get in the car do not fully realize that they are putting their life and the passengers' lives in danger. Even if you are a good driver, there is still a chance you could get in a car accident. There are so many people out there in the world who truly do not care about other peoples' lives or are intoxicated with drugs and/or alcohol.
Female breast cancer is the second most common cancer in the world with over 1.6 million cases diagnosed in 2012 (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2012). Deaths from breast cancer within Australia have increased by 380% from 2003 to 2012 (ABS, 2012)(Smith et al., 2012). An individual’s risk of developing breast cancer increases dramatically with age until 50 where it plateaus giving women a 1:8 lifetime risk (Kamangar et al., 2006)(Davies, 2012). There are several varieties of breast cancer with the most frequent being invasive ductal carcinoma (Fernandez-Vega et al., 2013).
Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally. Esophageal cancers (EC) are a significant worldwide health problem because of its poor prognosis and specifically, esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) incidence has been rising at an alarming rate for the past few decades (Howlader N et al., 2011). It is estimated that in 2013, 17,990 people in the United States will be diagnosed with esophageal cancer and greater than 85% of those diagnosed will succumb to the disease (Cancer Statistics, 2013). Even do there have been advances in surgical techniques, chemotherapy and radiotherapy; still these methods have not significantly modified its prognosis over the past decades. Diagnosis of EAC tends to drastically occur at an advanced
Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide, and the first in many developing countries. One in three women and one in two men in the United States will develop cancer in his or her lifetime. The burden of cancer continues to increase annually, mainly due to the aging and growth of the general population alongside a widespread display of cancer-causing behaviors, including physical inactivity and smoking. Approximately 12.7 million cancer cases and 7.6 million cancer deaths are estimated to have occurred globally. Current cancer treatments are useful, but many times ineffective or unreliable. While the goal of the treatment is to “fix” the cancer, many survivors, even among those who are considered cancer free, must cope with the long-term effects of treatment; psychological concerns, such as fear of recurrence or trauma from the past experience are also prevalent. A higher risk of developing heart-related problems are most often due to radiation therapy and chemotherapy, especially if certain drugs such as doxorubicin or cyclophosphamide are used; swelling of the heart muscle, heart disease, and congestive heart failure are only some of the side effects that occur in patients. Different cancer treatments may also damage the lungs and expose patients to inflammation and thickening of the lungs. The number of negative clinical outcomes emphasizes an urgent need for the development of better therapeutic methods to treat the disease. As a result, it is increasingly
Cancer surpassed heart disease as the major cause of death worldwide. This deadly disease targets people of all ages. Most of the time, people with unhealthy lifestyle are the ones who are affected. What are the lifestyle changes that people should do to prevent cancer?
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world. As a deadly disease that attacks the human body when some of the body’s cells begin to divide without stopping and spreads to the surrounding area, a definite cure has yet to be found. In 2008 approximately 7.6 million people died of cancer, about 13% of all deaths worldwide. (World Health Organization) The field of oncology, the study and treatment of tumors, continues to grow because of the growing need to find a cure for this brutal disease that claims so many lives. As a terminal disease to the body, there are many different types of cancer so there are also different types of treatment. However, to win the fight against cancer, detection and early treatment are equally vital
Over 14.5 million people have cancer in the United States today. Cancer has been one of the leading causes of death for a while. There are various types of treatments used to treat cancer. Although Chemotherapy and Radiation are common cancer treatments, Immunotherapy is on its way to becoming a side-effect free, FDA approved, cure.
Lung Cancer is by far the most common cause of cancer related death in the world. Every year more than 200,00 Americans are diagnosed with lung cancer and over 100,000 Americans die from lung cancer.
Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of cells, and is a major cause of death throughout the world. The development of cancer chemotherapeutics began in the 1940s [Shewach, D. and Kuchta, R, 2009] and very early drugs were based on nitrogen mustards, agents similar to mustard gas. Sulphur mustard gas was used as chemical warfare in World War I (WWI), and this led to new approaches for cancer therapeutics. These traditional chemotherapeutic compounds however, can attack cell division in a cancerous, as well as a normal cell, as tumour and normal cells share the same DNA. This leads to several serious side effects. Newer chemotherapeutics, such as the use of monoclonal antibodies, target specific differences between tumour and normal tissue, and therefore do not exhibit such toxicities [Shewach, D. and Kuchta, R, 2009]
Cancer disease imposes a global threat to public health. Epidemiological data clearly show an increase of cancer diffusion over the world every year. Moreover to genetic factors that are crucial for cancer formation and development, environmental factors are important for its progression and advanced. These include lifestyle as tobacco smoking, alcohol drinking, physical activity, industry and microbial factors as radiation, pollution, infection and diet
