The contentment of Cannery Row
What is the meaning of life? This has been a topic that has been greatly debated and discussed for as long as anyone can remember. Many people believe that happiness is the key to life and living a good life. Although achieving happiness can be difficult and it is another topic that no one really has a clear definition of and no one knows how to truly acquire it and can actually differ from person to person. John Steinbeck actually asks a question about happiness and in the story Cannery Row by John Steinbeck there are many different characters who… seem to have quirky personalities. While these characters do seem to live a tough life and don’t seem to have very much as far as money they are actually happy and content with their lives.
The characters in Cannery Row don’t seem to be very prosperous even the characters, such as Doc and Lee Chong, who seem to have the most out of everyone else do not have much and don’t seem to fit the ideology of happiness that is known of today. Lee Chong a chinese man who is actually the local grocer in the town of Cannery Row and actually extends a lot of his groceries out to the people of Cannery Row through a credit and in fact will cut people off when they've acquired a high debt and or if he feels he is getting taken advantage of. Doc is probably the most fortunate of the group he owns Western Biological Laboratories which is his business but he actually does it because hes very interested in life of
The meaning of life is to find the meaning of life. Is it not? We all go through each day trying to figure out which road out the infinite amount of paths will lead us in a better direction where happiness is prominent and society is flawless. However, not every single human being is going to fit on that narrow, one-lane highway to success. Bad choices, accidents, fate, family matters, society, temptation, anger, rage, addiction, and loss of hope can all be deciding factors in opting to choose that wrong path to self-destruction. The adverse thing is, once you've traveled so far down the road, you get so discouraged that you feel like you can never turn back or make up for the "lost time."
It is clear that when Steinbeck wrote this book, he used the different characters to push across the point that to not have a friend, there would be no point in living. He uses the loneliness of Crooks, Candy and Curley’s wife to show that without friends, life would be an ugly
The novel focuses on the lives of six friends, Mack, Eddie, Hazel Hughie, Jones and Doc, and
What is the meaning of life? According to Chris McCandless living free and not conforming to the natural way of life is the meaning to life, as shown in the book Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer. Similar to Chris McCandless, Ralph Emerson believes that following your dreams and making your own trail is the meaning of life according to his short story “Self-Reliance” by Ralph Emerson. The purpose of man's existence is to avoid conformity and following one's own instincts and ideas.
The professional people in Maycomb are poor at this time because it is during the time of the Great Depression. This is when the stock market crashed, leaving businesses in serious debt and causing severe financial straits
In more specific terms, or an obvious reason why the American Dream symbolization is overlooked, can be correlated to the initial writings of Cannery Row. Right from the gecko of the book, the preface is marked like the inside walls of Hannibal Lector’s rotting San Francisco jail cell, from the constant use of juxtaposition. This literacy metaphor floods through the first pages of the book stacking the building blocks of the town, characters, general vibes, and what the overall everything constitutes to each other in the town. Everything is compared in drastic terms, unraveling a sense of unease, anguish, remorse, and a general discomfort; the divide amongst Cannery Row’s citizens how ever is equally not dismissed. “Whore, pimps, gamblers, and sons of bitches,” are compared to “Saints and angels and martyrs and holy men,” and if that were not enough, Steinbeck delves into the financial divide between superintendents
What is the American dream? The American dream is the freedom to be whatever you want to become through hard work. In The grapes of wrath by John Steinbeck he portrays a family growing through the Great Depression, hoping to live the American dream. The Major characters have contrasting hopes for their lives pursuing the dream, but it may just be a promise never to come. Some of the major characters Tom, Pa, Ma, Casy, and Rosasharn have different beliefs on the “American Dream”, but they all play an important part of it.
Of Mice and Men: A Lonely Struggle Loneliness is a basic struggle in the human life. Everyone is affected by it once in a while, but in Steinbeck’s novel “Of Mice and Men”, he portrays the it through the lives of ranch workers in the early 1930’s America. Loneliness being the dominant theme, he presents characters who are yearning for companionship or an audience, particularly Candy, Crooks, and Curley’s wife. Crooks is probably the loneliest character in the ranch, who suffers from extreme loneliness because he’s black and his surrounding area is very racist towards him.
In the novel Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck depicts the essential loneliness of California ranch life in the 1930s. He illustrates how people are driven to find companionship. Which he shows through Candy, Crooks, Curley’s wife, George and Lennie.
In “The Meaning of Lives,” Wolf asserts that the question “What is the Meaning of Life?” is inherently unintelligible because it is uncertain what the question is asking. In other words it is too general because it has no specified context. Wolf then acknowledges, however, that there is value in examining the meaningfulness of a life. This is because she observes people wanting meaning as an unchangeable fact. While there is no grand reason for meaning, she suggests that we can create value through what we do in our life. In her work, Wolf constructs a framework on how to obtain meaning in one’s life. I will examine her view, then critically discuss the positive attributes and the shortcomings. Wolf does a sufficient job to outline a possible way to achieve meaning. However, I will argue that a definition for the meaningful life that does not include morality and happiness is not sufficient. Lastly, I will express the subjective and objective tension that weakens her stance.
In the book What’s It All About? by Julian Baggini discusses philosophy and the meaning of life. What is the meaning of life? Well known Greek philosphers such as Socrates and Plato believed that our purpose in this life was to gain knowledge in preparation for the next life. Other Philosophers such as Epicurus believed that pleasure is the main goal in life. After giving these ideas lots of thought, I have come to my own conclusion that the true meaning of life is far more complex than either of these; far too complex for any human to fully comprehend. In fact these two different philosophies are only part of the grand picture. If it were that easy for men to figure out our lives wouldn't be so messed up now. The meaning of life revolves around many different things. I
