Career Goals In Healthcare

Using the SMART method, my long term goal is to continue my work as a CNA while applying for healthcare administrator positions. I would like to work as an administrator for at least 3 years for any medical setting. While working, I will be looking into ways on how I can own and operate a home healthcare agency. According to Marak, (2017), I really don’t need to have experience in the medical industry; I would just need to have the passion for providing care, the marketing savvy, an understanding of business knowledge, and integrity. With my CNA experience, along with my other work experiences, I am half way there.

As noted previously when someone needs help or can no longer do certain things on his or her own he or she will contact a home health aide. I am currently employed with Hurley Medical Center as a Human Resource Service Center Advisor. In my current position, I service our employees and all areas that are related to human resources such as health benefits, leave of absences, tuition reimbursement, status changes and benefit days. I also service our retirement community with their health benefits. I love what I do and I love my employer. I am at Northwood University to obtain what I started over 32 years ago, a college degree. My main goal right now is to graduate in December of 2017 with a degree in Business Management. After graduation, I plan on looking for a better paying position with my current employer.

I have been working in the medical field for six years, I am currently working I have been working in the medical office am in for four years and hoping to expand my experiences in the future. Now days I believe it is essential for people to have good computer skills and knowledge. Including all computer software’s like Word, Excel and Power Point. I am mainly interested in working as a medical office administrator. Office administrators are responsible for all information management and organizing medical records. Excel can be used to keep track of medications, prescriptions, payments and many other health information. Because of this I believe anyone seeking a career in medical office administration should really take excel as part of their curriculum.

Health information is the data associated to a person’s medical history. It includes all the symptoms, diagnoses, procedures, etc. The health information of a patient can be viewed individually to see how a patient’s health has changed or it can be viewed within a larger set of data to understand how the population’s health has changed. “Health information management is the practice of acquiring, analyzing, and protecting digital and traditional medical information vital to providing quality patient care. It is a combination of business, science, and information technology.” I chose this career path because I was stuck between computer science and healthcare professions. My short-term career goals are to complete nursing school, pass the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX), and become a registered nurse. I start at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing this fall; I am expected to graduate in the spring of 2018. I am interested in becoming a pediatric nurse at first. Though I originally started out in a different kind of health care field, I quickly realized that was not where I wanted to be. Having started out in Medical Technology, I knew by the end of my first semester that this was not for me. I looked into a few different majors such as nursing before coming to the conclusion that I should be on the business end and not the science end.
