Over the history of our world, speech impediments affect many different people. Most of the time, individuals do not even realize the person they are speaking with has a speech disorder. This disorder even impacts icons including Greek philosopher Aristotle, physicist Isaac Newton, singer Elvis Presley, golfer Tiger Woods and actor Bruce Willis. However, one story that stands out involves Kind George VI of England. In his early childhood the prince acquired a stammer; now known mostly as a stutter. He went to a speech therapist, on a regular basis, who taught him how to use the muscles in his mouth to correct his stutter. His therapist also dove into psychological reason that explained why most of his concerns included talking to important people. After some time of seeing his doctor frequently, he improved immensely on his enunciation that he could get through radio session that seemed impossible beforehand. This disorder not only affects icons, like King George, but also a vast majority of children. In the United states alone, stuttering effects five percent of all people (Braunstein). This does not include other speech impediments like lisps and apraxia. Although the exact cause of speech impediments is unknown, studies proves that the disorders can come from genetics, neurological problems, or even psychological like King George. The chronic talker is a problem area that is typically a result of a member being nervous within the group or trying to impress and connect with other group members. If this issue is not dealt with, members my actual withdraw from the member or become angry at the leader for not addressing the situation (Jacob, et al., 2016). The leader can address this issue by giving the entire group a reminder that the groups goal is to give all group members the opportunity to be heard. This would be done with the hope that the talkative member would have enough self awareness that they could recognize they need to talk a little less (Jacobs, et al., 2016). Another option would be pulling them aside after the group session and inquire about how they felt during group , specifically inquiring to see if there was something that could be done to make them feel more at ease. For my CT observation I decided to attend Olathe Medical Center. I chose this site because this is where I will be studying and observing for my second year of the radiologic technologist program as my clinical site. The pavilion has two techs and the hospital has three. They are on a rotation and they strictly do CT only, they do not go back and forth between that and x- ray. In the hospital and pavilion they have one technologist come in at six a.m., eight a.m. and a third comes in at ten a.m. to the hospital. I observed in the hospital. I was in the hospital which takes ER and inpatients while the pavilion does outpatients. Right when I walked into the CT room I noticed that they had two machines in separate rooms and then the operating room was in the middle between the two rooms with each containing their own control panels. The two machines were a Siemen and Phillips. One scanner was a 64-slice and the other was a 128-slice.

In this assignment, I am going to review four cases, which will require a number of different communication skills focusing primarily on; developing a therapeutic relationship, communicating assertively, communicating effectively with an individual with a disability/impairment and communicating with individuals from another culture. W.C., a 26 year 11 month old woman, was brought to the Florida Atlantic University-Communication Disorders Clinic (FAU-CDC) by her boyfriend for a Speech-Language Evaluation. She was referred to the FAU-CDC by her neurologist for word finding difficulties and a possible articulation disorder after a left hemisphere hemorrhagic stroke one month ago. According to her boyfriend, W.C.’s symptoms began immediately following her stroke and are characterized by word finding difficulties, slowed and choppy speech, and mispronunciation of certain consonants that is affecting intelligibility along with a strained voice.

Choosing a major can be difficult, especially when considering expanding your collegiate career from your undergraduate career. For myself, Speech-Language Pathology was a clear answer for me to pursue, especially since I have a desire to help change an individual’s life and make a substantial impact that can affect more then just one individual. From the start of my Speech-Language Pathology collegiate career, I have always been drawn to working with children and increasing their communication skills. Although, my passion for working with children does not stop with expanding their communication skills, but also to help them to become more confident and content with whom they are.
