Choosing a major can be difficult, especially when considering expanding your collegiate career from your undergraduate career. For myself, Speech-Language Pathology was a clear answer for me to pursue, especially since I have a desire to help change an individual’s life and make a substantial impact that can affect more then just one individual. From the start of my Speech-Language Pathology collegiate career, I have always been drawn to working with children and increasing their communication skills. Although, my passion for working with children does not stop with expanding their communication skills, but also to help them to become more confident and content with whom they are.

Speech, language and communication difficulties can have a profound and lasting effect on children’s lives and development. These can affect their ability to communicate and interact with others. The impact of these difficulties will vary depending on the severity of the problems, the support they receive, the demands of the child’s environment
Communication is a two way process which allows us to express our thoughts and feelings to others, while allowing us in turn to understand what others are trying to convey to us. Communication involves speech and language (verbal) as well as facial expression, gesture and body language (non-verbal). Communication is an essential life skill for children and young people and it underpins their social, emotional and educational development. (Bercow 2008)
Communication is very crucial in life, especially in education. Whether it be delivering a message or receiving information, without the ability to communicate learning can be extremely difficult. Students with speech and language disorders may have “trouble producing speech sounds, using spoken language to communicate, or understanding what other people say” (Turkington, p10, 2003) Each of these problems can create major setbacks in the classroom. Articulation, expression and reception are all essential components for communication. If a student has an issue with articulation, they most likely then have difficulty speaking clearly and at a normal rate (Turkington, 2003). When they produce words, they
The first time I realized I was different was in second grade, when I opened my mouth to answer a question and my peers giggled as I struggled to answer. I pronounced my R's like W's, which threw my whole pronunciation of the English language into a twist. My previously "adorable" lapses in speech were now affecting me negatively. I was different than the rest of my classmates; I had been born with a speech disorder.
The chronic talker is a problem area that is typically a result of a member being nervous within the group or trying to impress and connect with other group members. If this issue is not dealt with, members my actual withdraw from the member or become angry at the leader for not addressing the situation (Jacob, et al., 2016). The leader can address this issue by giving the entire group a reminder that the groups goal is to give all group members the opportunity to be heard. This would be done with the hope that the talkative member would have enough self awareness that they could recognize they need to talk a little less (Jacobs, et al., 2016). Another option would be pulling them aside after the group session and inquire about how they felt during group , specifically inquiring to see if there was something that could be done to make them feel more at ease. “What, what did you say?” I often find myself saying this when talking with children. The likely culprit of why is poor listening habits. “Most people spend mere time listening than they spend on any other communication activity, yet a large percentage of people never learn to listen well.” (TLSC, 2008) The above example is what I like to call “pseudo listening.” People will be thinking about something else but appear to be listening and only get about half the intended message. Recently at my father’s (Ron) company because of a pseudo listening instance a $400,000 dollar piece of equipment did not get specked correctly. In my experience, communication disorders may be viewed differently depending on the age of the person with the communication disorder. For instance, a young child with an articulation disorder tends to be viewed as “cute” and “adorable” by adults. On the other hand, older children with articulation disorders tend to be viewed very negatively because they are looked at as “too old” to be speaking in this manner. Older children with articulation disorders are also more likely to encounter bullying while in school as opposed to children without a communication disorder. Therefore, parents may not seek treatment for their young child with an articulation disorder because they do not see anything wrong with it if everyone views it positively. However, parents of older children would be more likely to seek treatment because it may be looked at as embarrassing for the parents and the older child with the articulation disorder.
In this essay I will demonstrate to families who lack a good foundation of communication that developing healthy communication skills can lead to building closer relationships and solving mental health issues.
