In today’s world, distractions remain prevalent in simple everyday occurrences. Amongst these distractions is the use of cell phones whether simply walking down the hallway absorbed in a conversation or behind the wheel driving down the highway. Cell phones, no matter the context, are a major distraction. They have managed to pull us away from spending time with our families and appearing in places they are not prevalent such as family dinners and behind the wheel of a car.

Everyone wants to stay connected in each others lives by never missing a beat. More like never missing a text message in this day and age. Life is constantly finding its way to become full of responsibilities with little time to take a break as it is. Texting my family and friends is easier to respond to when I 'm taking care of my daughter and studying for school. Even a phone call seems better so I can multitask, cleaning the house or driving while talking on the phone. Communication is an essential key and important human need. By using technology, there is a deeper connection to communicating than some acknowledge.

Cell phones have changed our form of interaction with others significantly. I know that whenever I see someone I know of but do not really want to speak to I purposely take my phone out to avoid having to speak to that person. Also whenever I am with a group of my friends phones are always out talking to others that are not in front of them on messaging or social media.

The ability to communicate quickly and efficiently allows for the transmission of important data instantaneously. One such example of this is emergency text messages that can be provided to individuals for natural disasters. Should a natural disaster be about to affect an area such as a tornado, sever storm, flood, etc., people that live in that area can have emergency texts sent to their phones to warn them about the impending danger. This can literally save the lives of those who would have been otherwise caught unaware of the potential danger that they were in. Additionally, text messaging allows for people to maintain personal relationships with those that they do not have the ability to see on a regular basis. As a study showed, the average teenager uses the text message for about 54% of their interactions with their friends. Face-to-face talking was actually the third most used method of communication, weighing in at 33%. The ability of instant, efficient communication that the text message provides can help people maintain a relationship with a friend when the two literally live on opposite sides of the country (Minshall, 2012).

One problem with cell phones in today’s society is that they have become major distractions. Cell phones are distracting employees in the workplace and are leaving them with their jobs halfway done. Everywhere in the business industries, the employees are hard at work re-tweeting and catching up on the latest newsfeed rather than managing their time more wisely. Not only are cell phones a distraction in the workplace, they are also a distraction and disruptive in school districts, causing students’ attention to be elsewhere. Many students would rather text in the middle of class instead of pay attention to what the teacher is reviewing. In this case, students do not gain the amount of education provided for them. In addition to cell phones being distracting, people often like to multi-task by walking or driving while texting. These things cause them to be unaware of their surroundings. Texting while driving has become a major issue because texting and driving can lead to car crashes which are often fatal. On the other hand, texting and walking isn’t too bad, but can cause a little bit of embarrassment. There are stories of people walking into walls and bumping into people or tripping over a table because their nose seems to be stuck in their phone. To some, being on their cell phone is more important than grades, clients, and others around them.

People should ask themselves if they can leave their phone for a week. I think they may feel lost. It is because of the separation of these two lives that inhibit the individual from living his or her own authentic life. This is because the technology consistently distracts the individual from living his or her own genuine life, and ultimately distracts them from living through real experiences. In Ruhl’s play, “Dead Man’s Cell Phone,” Ruhl portrays the idea that advances in technology and communication has inhibited and distracted individuals and other around him or her, from truly living their authentic lives away from their cellphones.

In a society where we are surrounded by the convenience of modern technology, it can be a challenge not getting caught up in the convenience of things. If you think about the world twenty years ago, a cell phones only purpose was to make calls and getting in contact with people on the go a much simpler task. Now, it is basically a mini-computer with access to almost anything you could possibly want. But is that ease actually becoming a hindrance in our everyday lives? Despite the fact that the United States is one of the most prosperous and developed nations in the world, studies show that twenty-one percent of American adults cannot read anything above a fifth-grade level, and this rate of illiterate citizens is steadily increasing. Another study found that for every ten households in the United States, six will not even bother to buy one book in a year. What a lot of people don 't realize is that these low literacy rates are the source of so much more than social issues and mild concern over what our once seemingly perfect and indestructible nation is coming to.
