The description of a leader is a person that leads a group of people. A leader that has positive traits is a valuable asset in today’s society. A good leader will be honest and caring with a desire to make a positive outcome by encouraging followers and work toward a goal for the organization they are a part of. Leadership theories can come from people closely involved with an individual, and this paper will discuss how people influence leadership outcomes. A good leader has to also look to the future and how they will lead and this theory will also be included in this paper. Self-assessments are tools used in providing feedback to personal success and failures in a leadership role. This paper will include results of assessments test and determine if leadership improvement is needed.
Self-Assessment Results Social motives in a work setting are defined in three categories power, achievement and affiliation. Power is defined as to give orders and have them carried out, achievement is the need to build something of value, and affiliation is the interest to help others achieve (Bethel University, 2011). The social motives assessment taken revealed power is the lowest score received and this is an accurate result. The category of achievement and affiliation were a point in difference. The next question posed to Rene inquired about essential characteristics of a leader. After giving the question some thought she responded by saying that a leader must be able to remain objective and prioritize. “Prioritizing in my job is essential,” Rene stated, “with so many issues to deal with some nights it can be difficult to determine which to tackle first. However, remaining calm and objective in your decision making can help a leader prioritize properly, which can improve patient outcomes.” Additionally, Rene emphasized that the best leaders lead by example. By displaying desired attitudes and behaviors, a nursing leader may inspire their staff to act in a similar manner. Another area Rene stressed when posed this question was a leader’s ability to support learning. She went on to state that “it is necessary to focus on learning, not chastising. Placing the blame on someone rather than stepping back and looking at the details of a problem, deters the team from achieving the overall goal. Incident reports remain vital to the process of learning.” Rene continued to emphasis that by filling out incident reports individuals can analyze a situation or process and determine where the flaws or errors remain present. Without incident reports and learning from mistakes, growth remains difficult. Diana S. Contino (2011), author of “Leadership Competencies: Knowledge, Skills, and Aptitudes Nurses Need to Lead Organizations Effectively,” believes that organizational and
What is a leader? A leader is a person who commands a group, organization, or country. Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. I have experience democratic leaderships through playing on a high school football team, being apart of groups in college for class presentations, being a youth leader in my church, and also being apart of a family. I have gain important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. Some of valuable leaderships traits that I obtained and strengthened are: how to be a team player, to be a better listener, to have more patience, to be not afraid of constructive criticism, to be outspoken, and to be a problem solver. Even though I have gained a lot, I
In the world today, there are leaders everywhere such as Parents, Pastors, The President, CEO of Companies, Supervisors and World leaders just to name a few, these individuals can be good or bad, for you or against you. A leader is a person that sees things through in order to make change either in the mental growing aspect of one’s life, the economics of the world, or spiritual belief. The characteristics of a good leader are the leaders’ ability to inspire others willingness to leader and integrity.
As we continue to learn about leadership, we continue to see the importance of having certain qualities. There are differing opinions on what traits hold more importance than others, but in the end, each quality plays a specific role in forming an excellent leader. Three qualities that preform a role in the equation, and that needs strengthened in my own leadership skills, are enthusiasm, persistence and charisma.
It is evident that integrity and competence are two crucial traits of any successful leader. In order to get to know the importance of a quality over the other, we need to find out which of the two can a leader survive without.
Before this class, I had a very primitive and vague definition of leadership. Not only did I define it as per my views and ideologies, but I also said that each individual has their own definition of leadership. My initial belief was that leadership does not have a clear cut definition, but there were well defined leadership traits which made an individual. I also initially believed that personal traits did not translate into leadership traits with no strong correlation. After going through the various modules this class offered, it is safe to say that I have significantly redefined leadership and underwent a strong personal assessment. This paper talks what I took back from each of the class activities, assignments and how my self-assessment compares to the perception of others.
A leader is not simply just a title, but rather a combination of values and actions in which the person displays that ultimately defines you/them. In this case, my personal leadership model consists of an architectural style of leadership. It involves many characteristics that helps shape the ability to efficiently lead in the future, which requires the need to develop different skills, emphasize my core value, and establish a meaningful personality that includes intelligence, self-confidence, determination, integrity, and sociability. Once my models are established, then I will be able to evaluate whether or not I am supporting or contradicting the characteristics listed. In this case, this evaluation will advocate and provide me with the tools necessary to become and effective leader. This is important because in order
What qualities make a good leader? You can ask a hundred different people, and you will get a hundred different answers. A good leader is someone who accomplishes the mission, has the respect of their subordinates, and makes the difficult decisions when needed. For me, I believe that a great leader needs to have a variety of qualities, but most importantly a sense of fairness, hard work/care, and common consideration for others. Different experiences throughout my life and time at West Point have lead me to believe that these three tenants are what are most needed for a great leader. In terms of a leader’s moral character, common consideration has the greatest influence on the success of a leader, because without common consideration, a
Leadership is one of the most important traits to have as a human being. Without great leaders to help instill and create a sense of direction, I believe society world will be stagnant. I believe there is a variety type of the leaders such as, good leaders and bad leaders. A good leader must have several qualities. These qualities should not be taken likely and must be able to possess qualities like having good morals, such as integrity which will set the example for their subordinate. In addition to being a good leader, you must have a strong mindset and the ability to lead everywhere you go. I am going to be discussing how it is imperative to implement change when you are responsible for an organization. One quality that is important for a leader to possess is the ability to change.
What makes a good leader? General George Patton once said “lead me, follow me, or get out of the way”. (Kruse) Every day we are faced with decisions and events that determine our future. Many people have different views of what makes a good leader, but one thing that all good leaders possess is great communication and a positive attitude towards all of the members of the team. There are three types of leadership style, autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire. First, we need to know what the differences are between the three different types of leadership style. Autocratic is a form of leadership that does not give employees any say into the job or business, it is a style of leadership where the leader tells you what you need to do, and
What exactly is leadership? Many people believe that leadership is an easy role to fulfill, and that
The author (Cronkhite) listed several traits that are associated with leadership (Cronkhite, 2013, p. 331):
Our world is constantly changing. Society grows, views change and people evolve. As the world changes, we need to change with it and in order to do that we all need guidance, advice and authority to be pushed in the right direction. It’s the leaders in this world who really help us be our best selves, and aide us in making the changes we want to see in the world.
There is no single rule for leadership, a good leader makes own list of preferences and adapts to new styles to make a company a success. A good leader provides great motivation and empower other employees by encouraging them to be part of the decision making process. As a leader, I will take the responsibility of my mistakes when needed and design an alternative plan by seeing advise of my co-workers. While making my action plan, I would make sure that my goals are specific, measurable and realistic. As learned in this course, the idea of making a change and sustaining one, are two different things. The goal of the organization should be to sustain a change successfully.
“A leader is a person you will follow to a place you would not go by yourself,” said Joel Barker. Where would we be today in history, business, and life if not for the leaders we have followed to get here? Leaders are everywhere; they are running our country, leading our work department, and leading our class lines. The beauty of leadership is that everyone’s definition and preferred style is and can be different. When choosing a leader to write this paper on I knew exactly who to choose for two reasons. First, the leadership style is attractive to me and I know it most resembles the style I use when exercising my leadership roles. Secondly, and maybe more importantly, we both share a passion for all things coffee.
