What makes a good leader? General George Patton once said “lead me, follow me, or get out of the way”. (Kruse) Every day we are faced with decisions and events that determine our future. Many people have different views of what makes a good leader, but one thing that all good leaders possess is great communication and a positive attitude towards all of the members of the team. There are three types of leadership style, autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire. First, we need to know what the differences are between the three different types of leadership style. Autocratic is a form of leadership that does not give employees any say into the job or business, it is a style of leadership where the leader tells you what you need to do, and …show more content…
Our team consisted of Kashaud Bowman, Trevor Butler, and our leader Annie Perrotta. Annie’s type of leadership was more of a democratic leadership where she knew the situation, but allowed both Trevor and Kashaud to make suggestions towards achieving the goals that they needed to be accomplished. Having a democratic leadership approach not only helped get the jobs finished, but it also allows the followers a scenes of belonging, and made everyone work even harder because they had involvement into the job.
When we arrived at the Allegany County Animal Shelter the director of the animal shelter greeted us with a nice smile and friendly personality. Annie quickly introduced us and told the director all about our involvement at Frostburg State University. After being introduced, and filling out some volunteer paperwork, our first task was to clean out a storage building. At first sight, the room was overwhelming and looked like it would have taken all day to clean it because the room was filled to the roof with animal curates, cages, and metal gates. Annie quickly assessed the situation and began to look at all of the things that we had to take out of the building and disassemble. Annie told Kashaud and I to start taking everything out of the building and start putting each of the materials together in an area left and the building and start organizing the cages from larger to smaller. Before long the
Every person has a different definition of what makes a leader. Some feel a leader is inspirational, while others regard leadership as someone who can give criticism and make the tough decisions. Each definition is unique, and each is vague. This is why the definitions of leadership people use aren’t always accurate. Bolman and Deal, however, do an excellent job of presenting four frames of leadership people use to successfully—or unsuccessfully—support and lead a group of people. The four frames presented by the authors are: human resource, symbolic, structural, and political. The human resource frame is used by leaders to empathize with their followers, the symbolic frame is used to inspire and unite followers around a vision, the structural frame is used to emphasize the importance of a process, and the political frame establishes competition and focuses on creating allies.
What does it take to be an effective leader in today’s fast paced and ever changing world?
In the world today, there are leaders everywhere such as Parents, Pastors, The President, CEO of Companies, Supervisors and World leaders just to name a few, these individuals can be good or bad, for you or against you. A leader is a person that sees things through in order to make change either in the mental growing aspect of one’s life, the economics of the world, or spiritual belief. The characteristics of a good leader are the leaders’ ability to inspire others willingness to leader and integrity.
It is important for nurses to be good leaders? Discuss qualities you have observed in nurses that exemplify effective leadership in action? How do you think the observed behaviors help to improve patient outcomes?
What does it mean to be a leader? We encounter leaders in everyday situations, whether it be a professor, boss, coach, or parent. No matter how distinguished or subordinate our roles, we have some type of leadership responsibility over others. How does one effectively lead other people? What methods, ideas, and skills should leaders convey to the public? It is not always easy or fun to be a leader and it is almost guaranteed that a population will not like the views and beliefs of the one in charge. What type of person or idea comes to mind when someone says the word President? Hopefully, they are positive words like leader, intelligent, helpful, and hardworking. A president has one of the toughest leadership roles because he/she is placed in a position to make very tough decisions on topics that people have many varying opinions about. As a voter, it can be difficult to stay informed on topics and determine which party to choose. A person must ask themselves what they stand for or believe in and then decide which candidate is best qualified to fulfill the requirements. Being a first time voter is a very exciting experience that comes with a great responsibility. The 2016 campaign has showcased much personal and political turmoil of the candidates, making it hard to know which side to choose. With an election year like never before, the candidates have placed a lot of pressure on voters to decide who is fit enough to bring our country back into order, but Donald Trump has
What qualities make a good leader? You can ask a hundred different people, and you will get a hundred different answers. A good leader is someone who accomplishes the mission, has the respect of their subordinates, and makes the difficult decisions when needed. For me, I believe that a great leader needs to have a variety of qualities, but most importantly a sense of fairness, hard work/care, and common consideration for others. Different experiences throughout my life and time at West Point have lead me to believe that these three tenants are what are most needed for a great leader. In terms of a leader’s moral character, common consideration has the greatest influence on the success of a leader, because without common consideration, a
Leadership can be very complicated since it is personal and most of us have a different vision or stance on how we lead or think we lead. There are many definitions on what leadership is and most are usually correct in one way or another. A person’s leadership philosophy can be greatly influenced in many ways spanning their entire life and career. I have been influenced in many ways, starting with my parents and continuing to the newest A-school student checking into the Air Station. I like to think that a good leader is influenced by anyone he comes in contact with shaping who you are as a leader and that it never ceases to end. Being a United States Marine has also greatly influenced my life in many ways, including building the
Someone who is considered a leader has to have many qualities and abilities. They must have
What makes a leader? Some may say good values, environment, and role models. Others may say they are just born. I would not say I was just born a leader and I cannot say that there is just one moment that lead to all of this. There were a string of moments; accidental lessons and trainings. Overall, I do not think I ever chose to be a leader, I chose to be active and that choice is what lead me to where I am today.
Communication is the process of sharing information, ideas and feelings between people through speech, writing, or body language. Effective communication extends the concept of requiring that the content is received and understood by someone in the way that was expected. The objectives of effective communication include the creation of a common perception, behavior change and the acquisition of effective communication. Communication leads a person to be a leader. All coalitions need a strong leadership base, with current and emerging leaders, who have the skills, relationships, and vision to change individual interests into one collective strategy to achieve change. These skills of a good leader include: Effective communication, conflict management, organization, and ability to delegate tasks, relationship building and ability to share decision-making. (Foster-Fishman PG, Berkowitz SL, Lounsbury DW, Jacobson S, Allen NA, 2001)
There is leadership in all of us, although some of us may not realize that we are capable to lead others in some degree. The world has seen its fair share of leaders, both effective and ineffective ones; some had used their leaderships in negative lights such as Manuel Noriega, former Panamanian Dictator or positive ones such as that of Franklin D. Roosevelt. [The use of the pronoun ‘his’ to refer to the leaders is incorrect. Since you discuss a variety of leaders here, it must be used in the plural form.]Despite their differences, both leaders were very effective in their crafts. One may ask “What make an effective leader?” In my opinion, communication is the key. In order for leaders to succeed, they should be able to strategically communicate to their audiences.
Defining leadership is complex and varied in nature. The complexity derives from a multiplicity of societal depictions of “what is leadership?” leadership is found in different levels of society thus giving different meaning and definition depending on the audience.
What traits make a good leader? There are many views on what actually makes a good leader. In this paper, I will describe five leadership theories, identify and explain the traits that are exemplified in each theory and provide a scenario, and choose one leadership theory that I believe would be most effective in an organization of my choice and explain why. The following theories will be described in the information to follow: Great Man theory, Contingency theory, Participative leadership theory, Transactional leadership theory, and Transformational leadership theory.
What is a good leader? Often, when we think of a “good leader”, we think that they must be good people. We associate the word “good” with empathy, ethics, being honourable, and morality. Because of the implication of the word, we have a skewed and biased understanding of what makes a “good” leader. Instead, I want you to think of what it means to be an effective leader. This removes the bias that comes with the word good. So, what is an effective leader? Being a visionary, being persuasive or inspiring, and achieving set goals are hallmarks of effective leadership. An effective leader does not need empathy or ethics.
Ever known of a person who has characteristics that make him or her inspiring? That person may be a leader. I remember looking up to my parents as a child because of how hard they had worked. They worked hard to earn money for me despite not knowing much English. I thought that it was inspiring because they were so motivated and determined. I was inspired because of their ambition. To me, they were leaders. So what is the definition of leadership? Leadership is when a person own qualities and characteristics such as making a great impression on people, having a positive mindset, and helping their peers. Three people who meet the criteria of a leader would be Pope Francis, Tim Cook, and Jeff Bezos.
