Children are social learners and it is crucial that all adults working with them need to model good communication through listening and speaking which will aid the development of the child’s friendships, confidence and self-esteem.
Communication is constantly happening within the day care centre and in my job role I have a responsibility to communicate with staff, service users and other professionals. I use various forms of communication but I also seek to make sure that it is understood. Communication has got to be understood before it can be effective and so I try to ensure comprehension when I am verbally speaking by getting staff to repeat what I have asked them to do. I also write simply worded memos and emails to ensure ease of comprehension. As child practitioners we must work on our skills in communicating with children because the way we communicate with them is important not only for their communication and language development, but also the development of our relationship with them. Young children often aren't able to express their thoughts and feelings in words, or express them poorly. Because of this, it's important that child practitioners can listen carefully and help children to learn how to express themselves and also provide what they need.
We also use communication books to for each child, this makes it easy for parents/ carers to communicate messages to a child’s key worker and to inform them of their child’s daily activities at nursery. This helps to build a good positive relationship with parents/carers and also offers us the opportunity to include parents in the further development of their child at home too. (Parents and practitioners can have a lot to learn from each other).
Integrated working is achieved through effective collaboration and co-ordination across all services and sectors including voluntary who work with children, young people and their families. These sectors could be housing, police, health, child-minders, community groups or early year’s workers. The above services are a fundamental role for both children, families and carers who may need the support of these agencies .Multi- agency Collaboration is crucial in partnership working, to support better outcomes for children and their families. Every child needs communication to help promote their learning and development. Every child needs a good listener and eye contact when talking.
Effective communication with children is important to make sure that they understand the language of learning so that they can grasp concepts and ideas, actively take part in problem solving and successfully develop their own ideas and opinions.
