It is known that China is extremely overpopulated with its 1,354,040,000 citizens as of January 2013 and “ as of September 2013, that number had grown even further to 1,360,720,000”. Knowing that “China represents 19.48 percent of the world’s total population” (China Employed Persons) helped me decide on which country I wanted to focus my report on.

As described before, when Deng Xiaoping came to power, his goal was for China to fulfill the Four Modernizations: modernization in agriculture; industry; science and technology; and defense. Deng believed that the only way China could keep up with Western countries was if China achieved the Four Modernizations. Specifically, in order to achieve the Four Modernizations, Deng had to fulfill a two-step goal. The first stage was to build up economic institutions and to set up a strong industrial base, both of which had been denied to China during Mao’s Cultural Revolution. The second stage of the Four Modernizations was China’s emergence from isolation and integration into the global economy, both of which were crucial for China’s commercial economy to develop. Deng Xiaoping’s biggest accomplishment was his achievement of this second goal. Specifically, the period of time when Deng reformed and opened up China to the world is known as 改革开放, which is pronounced Gaige Kaifang. What separated Deng Xiaoping from other leaders in the past was that Deng’s method of thinking was very pragmatic. Known fully as the people’s republic of China, this country has improved vastly in terms of economic progress in the past decades. With 93% of its population being Han Chinese, China also has 55 other ethnic minorities. This percentage totals up to 1.37 billion people, making China the country with the largest population in the world. The population of China is rather unevenly distributed into 23 different provinces and each province is governed by a local government. China has the second highest GDP in the world of 19.24trillion USD and this figure is increasing rapidly. With over 3000 years of written history, China is also one of the oldest country in the world. During this 3000 years, China experienced imperial rule up till the last century when the last dynasty, the Qing Dynasty ended. With this long history, China also faced numerous rebellions, overthrowing of dynasties, wars and other disasters. However, its people persevered and hence also help build a prosperous country we know as China today.

The ongoing economic rise in China effects the US in many ways, including things that some people wouldn’t even consider. It can be seen that the Chinese are beginning to need more jobs, but can that be because some of theirs are being given to us? And, that’s not the only thing they’re giving us. China has the proven to be worst pollution in the world, and it has gotten to the point where the polluted air has travelled overseas to the US, and has begun to take a toll on us. But, they’re not only giving to us. Because of it becoming harder to find jobs, the students push themselves to the limit to become perfect, which could create competition with graduates here in America.

With a population of 1.357 billion (2013)3, China is the most populated country in the world. Along with the huge population comes a market that is unmatched by any other country of the world. Both domestic companies and foreign companies want to tap into this large market that just recently embraced capitalism and entered into the World Trade Organization.
