The term Cognitive Disability is rather a broad term. Before 2010 the term mental retardation was used instead of cognitive disability. The stigma that comes with the term mental retardation caused it to be changed. When Rosa’s Law was passed in 2010 the term changed. IDEA changed the terminology but the definition remained the same. (Partners Resource Networks,2011) In article 7 it states that Cognitive disability manifest during the developmental period and is characterized by significant limitations in cognitive functions. This disability shows up before the age of eighteen. Clinical diagnosis of Cognitive Disability can include Down Syndrome, Brain Injury’s, Autism, and even includes dementia. Approximately 6.5 million people in the United States have some form of Cognitive disability. In fact, one in every ten children who need special education have some form of Cognitive disability. (Parentcenterhub, 2011) most people affected with a cognitive disability have a mild form, so it makes it rather hard to recognize. Most children that are diagnosed can live an independent life as an adult. Early dictation of Cognitive Disability is extremely important. The sooner the child with Cognitive Disability can get help the better the outcome will be. There are certain signs to keep looking for in a child that may have cognitive disability. The child may sit up, crawl or walk later than other children. The child learns to talk later or sometimes has trouble speaking. The child finds it hard to remember certain things. The child could also have trouble understanding social “rules”. A child with cognitive disability may have trouble seeing consequences for their actions. A child with a cognitive disability has trouble solving problems, and thinking logically. There are many reasons why someone would have a cognitive disability. The disability usually shows up before the age of eighteen, and the sooner it is diagnosed the better the outcome will be. These factors are associated with cognitive disabilities learning, reasoning, and problem solving. There are different kinds of cognitive disabilities such as mild to severe cognitive disability. A child IQ and adaptive behavior is what essentially diagnoses the child with cognitive disability. Cognitive disability is a common disability in the Unites States. Most people can remain independent living their lives unless they are diagnosed with a severe form. If the child can’t perform normal activities of daily living, then they will need assistance with living alone.
There are different ways to help a child with cognitive disability in a classroom. Individualized plans that are tailored to that student with cognitive disability are beneficial to the student learning capabilities.
