ll. College Athletes are inherently better off with accepting scholarships versus a salary while participating in sports.
Despite the millions of dollars brought in by college playoff games, a professor from the University of Kentucky John Thelin, bases his calculations on players retaining $100,000 salary vs. a $65,000 scholarship, Thelin has stated that after various taxes, the student/player is further ahead to take the scholarship.
At the same time, U.S. News reports that the NCAA takes in $6,000,000,000 annually; with none of this ever reaching the players. Certainly, these players could exceed the $100,000 salary and even with taxes make it worth their while.
C. Be that as it may, educators and

It is important to realize that ironically, the vocal opponents of paying college athletes are raking in millions and millions of dollars and the athlete has no guaranty of a future career in his or her sport.
A college degree in itself does not ensure a future. Especially if an athlete puts more focus on the sport than the learning aspect while in college. To put it differently, it is a well known fact that some athletes are put through college more for their athletic abilities rather than their proficiency in academic studies.
B. It must be remembered though, that not all degrees are considered equal, and unfortunately, many athletes are counseled towards majors that allow them to undertake more time for their sport instead of their school work. As an illustration, the NCAA touts that the degrees that athletes are receiving are worth way more than any monetary gains. Ultimately, the majority of degrees they end up with are not sufficient to provide a
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) makes roughly $1 billion in income annually and the athletes do not receive any of it. This topic has been debated for many years and is still being debated. The debate dates back to the 1980s and now athletes are demanding that they deserve to be paid since profits are made off of them. Some athletes such as former and current basketball and football players came together with lawsuits to federal courts asking for rewards from profits NCAA makes gets of them. Research has opened several different opinions on this matter. There are many pros and cons for paying college athletes. College sports provide a huge source of the university’s income. The athletes, however, receive their scholarship
University’s draft athletes to work within the NCAA, a, multi-billion dollar industry that regulates players to the point of management. All television revenue, ticket and jersey sales, promotions and other sources of income goes to everyone involved in the business except for the athletes creating the worth. According to USA Today Sports in 2014, the NCAA had total revenue of nearly 1 billion during its 2014 fiscal year, well beyond the revenue generated by the NFL, and NBA playoffs. (NCAA nearly topped $1billion in
When people hear of college athletics, all they think of is a game. Most people do not realize that there is a million dollar industry going on around these athletes. Eric He, a sports fanatic who writes for the Daily Trojan, states, “The NCAA is a nonprofit, tax exempt organization that just happens to be a billion-dollar industry, raking in $740 million per year from March Madness alone” (par. 7). When the NCAA is generating that much money, how can it not go to the players? It is not the
Whether or not student-athletes should be paid has been a hotly debated topic since the 1900s. College athletes spend just as much time, if not more time, practicing and devoting time and energy to sports as they do academics. For this, many athletes are rewarded with scholarship money. However, many people believe it is not enough. Should we pay student-athletes a slice of the wealth or is a full-ride scholarship enough? (Business Insider). What if the athlete gets injured? Where does the money come out of to support each athlete’s salary? The huge amount of money being generated from college sports has led some people to think that the athletes are entitled to some of that revenue. While, some think that student-athletes should be paid, others disagree for various reasons.
Rodeo is a very thrilling, exciting, and dangerous sport. During rodeos, one meets many new people, travels across the United States of America, and has the glorious Friday night lights shining down on them. During high school rodeo and college rodeo athletes must meet different levels of expectations; their performance because of scholarships or money, their coaches or parent’s expectations, and academic success. Expectations for college rodeo athletes are higher than the expectations for high school rodeo athletes. First off, high school contestants do not have to perform great to keep scholarships given to them. High school rodeo athletes are not on scholarship to rodeo. The money they use to rodeo comes from the contestant and his parents. Therefore, the contestant only
College sports are extremely popular across America and bring in billions of dollars of revenue every year through ticket and merchandise sales. Currently, the National Collegiate Athletics Association, or the NCAA, gains around 11 billion dollars in revenue annually (listland.com). The problem at hand is that the college athletes who are performing on the field to bring in all of this money do not receive any of it, all of the revenue goes to the university and the NCAA. This money then vanishes into growing black holes such as million dollar coach contracts and stadium renovations. The NCAA argues that a full ride scholarship is compensation enough for players, but in reality that is not true and some players are not even on scholarship.
“A partner from the St Louis - based firm Bryan Cave says that athletes go to college to get a degree. Some just end up playing sports.” (Cooper et al.1). Many people tend to think that college is all about sports. Attending college is a privilege. (Cooper et al.1) there fore, athletes are already being rewarded by attending college.
SMU became the University of the death penalty because they were cheating and using money to get top high school football athletes. That is against the rules of the NCAA for a short period of time they have gotten away with it but finally got caught when former football players came out and speak on the matter to the media. Which they made it public and the NCAA had to take charge and punish SMU for their actions. Which lead to the death penalty and for future football athletes they had to suffer from the death penalty. Overall, the players did not have to take the money but most did and it cost scholarships, being ban from bowl games, and no home games in 1987.
The conferences of each team to make it into the college football playoffs will earn its conference six million dollars each. The organization that is in charge of the college football playoffs will take in about 470 million each year from ESPN. Coaches make millions while the players of the teams help make that coach rich. On January 11, 2016 players will work one last time for the season and help earn the NCAA 1 billion dollars a year from unpaid labor. Black athletes are taking over college sports at a rising rate, and are making the game more interesting. College football coaches
However, according to Warren Sulmasy, these college student-athletes are being paid, but in a different way…through scholarships. Sulmasy, argues, “The reason we have Colleges and Universities is to educate our young people. The colleges expect star performances for their upfront investments, rewarding college players with full paid 4 year college education”. Now, Sulmasy can make the statement that college student-athletes are given full scholarships, but in actuality the percentage of athletes on any type of scholarship is not as high as one might think particularly for division one, which is the only division that can offer a full athletic scholarship. In fact, according to the NCAA, nearly fifty six percent of all college student-athletes receive some level of athletics aid. This percentage increases less than ten percent at sixty one percent for division two athletes. As for division three, the percentage rises juristically to eighty two percent. However, these statistics do not account for the percentages of full athletic
College athletes are finally getting attention on the fact that they are not paid. I believe that whether or not it is college or pro sports they deserve a salary. These players put their heart and soul on the field and get nothing in return. In the articles “Athletes New Day” by Paul Marx and “College Athletes Should Not Be Paid” by Warren Hartenstine, the reasons for college athletes to be paid are very evident. No matter the case, if the students move on to pro sports or not after college, they should be entitled to some pay for their contributions. College athletes deserve to be compensated for their playtime in these sports, sales of products with their name on it, and even compensation for their injuries.
I am writing on behalf of men soccer athletes in the campus who loves to play and play for the name of university of Minnesota. The university has been providing all kind of academics for all the students. From business to engineering to medical majors.
It is an age old debate on whether a college athlete should be paid. It is a high school student 's dream to play sports at the collegiate level. Many people question why the NCAA, coaches, and administrators are allowed to earn large amounts of money while the student athlete’s hard work and efforts are limited to a scholarship. Others feel that is should be considered a privilege that a college athlete can earn a college degree while enjoying what they love, by playing collegiate sports. Student athletes should not receive payment because they are already receiving payment in the form of an expensive athletic scholarship and are also able to receive the new cost of attendance stipend to assist with further financial burdens.
The excitement rose, nerves became as present as an imaginary figure sitting on your shoulder. Anticipating the moment when you got to step off the bus onto the campus of the drake stadium. Thinking this is where big athletes run, celebrities, and now you get a chance to run on this track. I thought about the other athletes across the world who wouldn't get the chance to have such an awesome experience that I got. It was a surreal moment in my life and I will never forget it. Being only a freshman in highschool I got to compete with some of the most legendary athletes to ever run in the state of Iowa.
Wrestling is one of the more difficult sports when it comes to being in high school or college. It is not for everyone the sport is very demanding physically and mentally. To the point where it could seriously injure someone. In wrestling at the beginning of the season you will choose a weight class that you will wrestle for the season. On the day of the meet you have to weigh in and weigh the weight class you chose. Some wrestlers would do just about anything to make weight even if it meant making themselves throw up, dehydrate themselves, or starve themselves.
