Communication In The Healthcare Workplace

Communicate is essential in health and social care settings because without a good communication to patients, families, colleagues and management is very difficult to deliver good service of care.

Within a health care setting communication is a necessity. This communication not only includes the need for professional communication but also the way in which information is shared to the patient and to other healthcare workers. Another important aspect of health care worker such as a nurse is the effectiveness off a handover. Within the video, Effective Communication in nursing these three aspects of communication (Professional communication, provision of information and handover) were seen and will be analysed further, within this essay. These will be analysed through the three aspects, the care of the patient, the image of the individual nurse and the health outcomes of the patient. All of these three aspects of communication are vitally important to the overall patient needs.

The practice of nursing utilizes constant communication between nurses, patients, physicians, coworkers, and various other members of the healthcare team. It is clear that effective communication is vital in the provision of safe and effective nursing care. A long history of miscommunication-related medical errors has spurred research aimed toward improving communication and lessening consequent error. Research has identified various forms of communication structure acronyms that when used correctly, allows for a more organized and precise shift report. These acronyms include SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation, and SHARE (Standardize, Hardwire, Allow opportunities to ask questions, Reinforce, and Educate). In addition, studies have identified a more effective shift report location that enhances nurse-to-nurse as well as nurse-to-patient communication. Bedside reporting was explored and determined to be a very effective form of nursing report that increases overall patient safety and satisfaction. Communication improvement is a continuous focus within the healthcare arena and is vital in the provision of safe patient care.

As mentioned by Imhof & Kaskie (2008), communication is very important in the health care organizations that have complex organizational structures. Most of the employees are not able to communicate clearly and this can lead to conflicts which block the employees from providing the quality care the patients need.

It is very important to be able to recognise what a person’s body language is saying, especially when as a health or social care worker you are dealing with someone who is in pain, worried or upset.

In the field of health care, communication is essential for proper function in every situation. Poor communication skills can result in perilous and sometimes fatal consequences. Each interaction with coworkers and patients is critical, and effectively communicating is an important means by which quality care is provided. As future health care providers, it is our responsibility to learn to effectively communicate between other providers and patients. Wayfinding shifts were an excellent way to practice effective communication in a health care setting. During my wayfinding shifts, I experienced firsthand the communication process between providers and patients while applying concepts about effective communication with patients and providers.

Communication plays a vital role in the healthcare setting, as the relationship with the healthcare professional sets the tone of the care experience and has a powerful impact on patient satisfaction. It is “the shared process in which messages are sent and received between two or more people which are made up of a sender, receiver, and message in a particular context” (cite, date). This essay highlights the importance of, and some common barriers to, effective communication in the healthcare setting. It involves many interpersonal skills such as effective observation, questioning and listening, giving feedback, recognizing and removing barriers.

In the health care setting communication and teamwork is paramount. They are both essential in providing high quality of care to patients. Health care professionals will have unique roles that ultimately piece together to reach a common goal and that is to provide a safe environment to satisfy their duties as practitioners to achieve a high standard of care and positive outcomes for patients. In order to meet these goals, an understanding of an individual’s comprehension of both written and oral language lays at the foundation of client-centered and effective care. Without this knowledge, individuals and populations will continue to experience healthcare service disparities and suffer poor healthcare outcomes (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2017). An appreciation for the diversity and individual needs of each client must be respected and integrated into healthcare service delivery.

Healthcare team are working hard to improve patient safety, implementing new programs and increasing patient satisfaction score. In all these task effective and proper communication skills is very important. Although some function of management such as planning, organization and controlling can be reasonably isolated, communication impacts all management activities and cuts across all phases of the management process (Marquis& Huston, 2012).

Communication is essential, without it the organization would not be successful. Leaders need to communicate with their staff members and vice versa in order to not create misunderstandings. Organizations need to establish goals, discuss policies, and talk in regards to problems the organization can improve on. It’s necessary to have mandatory meetings, in the meetings it is significant for staff members to participate and be engaged. Leaders need to educate their staff members about current situations and demands. It’s important for the staff members to be up to date on what's going on that affects the healthcare system in order to provide patients with accurate information. In order to collaborate effectively, you must first know what the meaning of communication is and how it plays a vital role in healthcare collaboration. Communication is comprised of verbal and nonverbal modules. It is geared on how people use messages to create meanings within various contexts, and is the discipline that studies all forms, modes, media, and consequences of communication through humanistic, social scientific, and aesthetic inquiry. Knowledge and understanding of communication and strong communication skills allow people to create and maintain interpersonal relationships. Whenever the pair is not in correspondence, the nonverbal components generally dominate the communication.

According to Kavaler and Alexander (2014), “In healthcare, standards are statements concerning proper procedures and/or actions to be taken in given clinical or administrative situations” (p. 29). In healthcare facilities, there are several standards and guidelines that must be followed to perfection to ensure that patients, staff, clients and the whole organization interests are safe. Failure to meet the required standards, can cause legal problems to the healthcare facility and put patients’ lives at risk. Notably, there are several factors that can lead to adverse events, for example, lack of communication between staff or between staff and the patients, and fail to follow prophylaxis procedures to newly admitted patients. The interaction of several risk behaviors and failure to meet standards of care can lead to adverse events that can harm patients, clients or entire organizations.
