Calvin Coolidge was the George Bailey of politics. Both had dreams that were never achieved; Coolidge wished to be a lawyer, George yearned to travel. However, both found themselves going to a higher calling; George took over the legacy of his father and changed his hometown of Bedford Falls through the Bailey Building and Loan, Coolidge becoming a politician and eventually the President, changing the country. Perchance their good character can be attributed to a simpler age. Either way, the two worked to a greater good. They both cared for and respected their friends and family, as well as the whole of their country. The idea of "by the people, for the people," is clear in both of their personalities. George Bailey will be forever a hero of
When comparing these two presidents, it is vitally important to first of all highlight that both presidents were without any doubts, great personalities and they by right, occupy their places on the historical pages of the development of the US. They both were concerned with the interests of the people and they did their best to help them go through the difficult times
Another President who validates the ideals of Neustadt was Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt’s fifth cousin (Presidents). Franklin Delano Roosevelt made the presidency a symbol of leadership and purpose in a time of depression and war. He established the role of the president to be chief legislator and has been labeled the “manipulative leader.” His charm was remarkable. He relied on his persuasion skills as a political tool. It was written that “In his geniality was a kind of frictionless command.” His success during the depression and New Deal programs, and the leadership he displayed during World War II is partially due to his presidential personality of unity. President Roosevelt was described as an artist of interpersonal relations; he knew how to combine diverse advice in unified solutions and strike chords of support through affirmation. He truly strived to gain the trust of the
In the first two decades of the twentieth century the national political scene reflected a growing American belief in the ideas of the Progressive movement. This movement was concerned with fundamental social and economic reforms and gained in popularity under two presidents. Yet Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson espoused two different approaches to progressive reform. And each one was able to prevail upon congress to pass legislation in keeping with his own version of the progressive dream. These two people, although they had different principles in mind, had one goal: to make changes to the nation for the better of the people and the country. Setting out to reach this goal, Roosevelt came to be a president of the common man while
Throughout the 1920's and after World War II., America faced many problems economically and socially. The Republican Party had been always one of the largest parties in United States; therefore, Republican presidents have maintained a big role in the administration of United States either before and World War I or after World War II. The Republican presidents in the 1920's were Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover. Whereas the 3 Republican presidents elected after World War 2 were Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan. In both periods, these Republican presidents have similarities and differences in domestic and foreign policies. In addition, during and between these periods some events such as Great Depression,
George Washington Plunkitt was a complicated politician from New York in the 1900’s. He had his own questionable way of seeing what’s right and what’s wrong. Plunkitt’s Ideas of right a wrong sometimes seemed to be off. However, some of his ideas about things that needed to be reformed were as true then as they are now. Plunkitt seemed to be a man that knew how to get what he wanted out of people with very little effort. From the perspective of an outsider this could make him hard to trust, but to people then this wasn’t a problem.
When President Hoover entered office in 1929, stock market prices were at all time highs and the American economy prospered. Suddenly, in October of 1929, the stock market crashed and thousands of Americans lost their entire life savings. The crash sparked the most horrific and devastating economic crisis of all time. In the tedious years to follow, records suggest that stock prices fell “about 80% from their highs in the late 1920s” (Stock Market Crash). Soon after Black Tuesday, the United States economy crumbled to pieces. Many people became unemployed and homeless. Through the course of a decade, Presidents Herbert Hoover and Franklin Roosevelt tried and failed to bring an end to the Great Depression with their own domestic policies and political ideals. Before Hoover’s election, federal administrators praised his humanitarian spirit. When Hoover became president, he fell short of his glowing reputation and failed to recognize the severity of the situation America was facing. The nation felt out of touch with their commander-in-chief and in the presidential election of 1932, Hoover was squarely defeated by his popular Democratic opponent, Franklin Delano Roosevelt who promised a “New Deal” to the suffering American people. The Great Depression was a long and difficult time for many Americans ended only by the beginning of World War II. Two utterly different presidents guided America through the worst financial crisis ever seen with two different policies, two

Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson are two of America’s most celebrated presidents during the 20th century. Theodore Roosevelt who was a Republican had a military background and created the American conservation movement. Theodore Roosevelt was also once shot by an would be assassin and still managed to give his speech. Roosevelt was famous by his quote “It takes more than one to kill a moose.” On the other had Woodrow Wilson who is a Democrat formed the idea of preserve peace. The stories about these men are the stories that are taught in our
Theodore Roosevelt may be one of the most powerful presidents that attacked Trusts1 and corporations to make them just so that everyone could prosper. Thayer, a friend of Roosevelt wrote, ". . .he took the deepest personal satisfaction in fighting the rich and the soulless corporations. . ." (Thayer). This led into the 1920's a prosperous decade in which people received "new money." Theodore Roosevelt stressed more for people to be responsible than to be autonomous, or, in other words, to help others besides helping yourself. He was able to bring two separate groups together to make a better America. He brought the Trusts that wanted the government to stay away and then the other side
During his time as President, Coolidge vetoed a bill providing bonuses to World War I veterans as the costs were too great, and he also refused to reduce import tariffs on foreign goods (“Calvin Coolidge”). However, Coolidge did support the Kellogg-Briand Pact, which was an international peace plan signed by the U.S, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, along with sixty other nations to outlaw war between the nations, but there was no system for enforcement, besides the nation’s word, which would soon prove not to be enough (“Calvin Coolidge”). Additionally, during Coolidge’s time he believed in free enterprise, and thought it meant that businesses were exempt from government rules. In other words, Coolidge thought regulation would cause businesses to become less profitable, thus leading to an unhappy nation, which is an undesirable goal for a President. In order to prevent this from occuring, Coolidge established regulatory agencies such as the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Reserve Board to help the businesses (“Calvin Coolidge”). Coolidge’s laissez-faire attitude also extended to the farmers, where he vetoed the McNary-Haugen Bill in 1927 and in 1928, which would have let the government purchase and store crop surpluses (“Calvin
Franklin Roosevelt was a man who ran for 4 terms, and won the Presidency even though he was crippled by polio. The man used his sheer will and power to make himself look presidential, and the world benefited from it because of it. With the creation of the jobs in the USA, improving our infrastructure, and putting unemployed Americans back to work. The man took his initiative and ushered in a new wave of Democrats that lasted for over thirty years. I identify with him, because I wish to also one-day usher in a way of democrats that last over thirty years. Not democrats of today, Democrats that tax corporations, and the rich. Democrats that put Americans back to work, improving our place in the global economy, and making America a superpower.
Franklin D. Roosevelt was a man who besides his intelligence, charm and strong confidence, he was able to sustain the nation through the most overbearing crisis know as the Great Depression as well as World War II. While managing to stay optimistic, Franklin Roosevelt helped people regain faith in themselves. Despite all the chaos going on at the time, “he was met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory (pg. 90).” He was praised for pushing the government to help those who were underprivileged. This was a new beginning in time for Americans known as the New Deal. He told the country to live by; “The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself (pg 90).” Franklin Roosevelt made a very
Two great men, two great presidents, led our nations to excellency and great success. Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson were hard working, intelligent men who were very familiar, but were also different in many aspects. Through their dedication to our country and their passion of politics they have made our country better.
Roosevelt simply acted in the interests of the common working man, fixing things that they found unjust. For years, the poor and
Throughout our nation's history it has endured 43 presidents, some of them have been remembered as great men who served our country well and made it a better place. Others are more well known for the scandals they caused and others are hardly remembered at all. Despite the amount of presidents that we have had there has never been a president who stands out as the best president ever. Although there are two presidents from the post world war 2 era, each from two separate parties that I believed both had some of the skills to be the best president ever.
