Two of the most used computing devices today are laptops and tablets. Laptop means a portable microcomputer having its main components (as processor, keyboard, and display screen) integrated into a single unit capable of battery-powered operation (Merriam-Webster). Tablet is defined by Merriam-Webster as a mobile computing device that has a flat, rectangular form like that of a magazine or pad of paper, that is usually controlled by means of a touch screen, and that is typically used for accessing the Internet, watching videos, reading electronic books, etc. Laptops and tablets are two different kinds of computers with laptops being suitable for productivity and tablets being appropriate for consumption (Smith). Film makers need a large display which can give a lot of workspace; a faster clock speed of the CPU; and the dedicated graphic cards to work on high-definition video. Even though iPads can strugglingly do some photo editing, working on a PC is, for the most part, easier and more pleasurable (Smith). Applications explicitly designed for mobile devices like tablets are not as powerful as their desktops’ counterparts; also, with the current hardware giving tablets accesses to laptops’ software are impractical (Bourque). According to what is mentioned earlier, serious gaming is another field where laptops’ powers are necessary. In addition, according to the definitions given in the introduction, tablets are not supposed to have these accessories. Since a tablet is defined as a device which “is usually controlled by means of a touch screen,” and one of the main parts of laptops is a “physical” keyboard, using one with a tablet alters the definitions. According to DataXoom, one advantage which tablets have over laptops is that they are more portable, so using accessories with a tablet ruins the benefit, not to mention that it is unreasonable why one who longs for portability would carry many pieces of machines at once. Compared to what a laptop is capable of, a tablet is already an expensive device; therefore, paying more for the same experience is not very sensible.
In conclusion, Tablets are really great machines, however they cannot replace laptops effectively. The main reasons which make tablets disqualified are the lack of effective physical keyboards and the little power when compared to laptops. When it comes to this, it is not the question of what is better, it is the question of what is more
