With the status of the country’s belligerency heavily in question, an apprehensive President Woodrow Wilson prepared to request from an unmotivated and unprepared country a declaration of war against Germany. After exerting every attempt possible to retain the peace and honor of the United States, the President was finally forced to choose between the two, in which he opted for the latter (Seymour 26). As he sat down to compose his congressional address proposing war, the uncertainty of his decision overwhelmed him. He confided to a member of his cabinet, Frank Cobb, that he had never been as unsure about anything in his life as the judgment he was making for the nation (Baker 506). Two American Presidents, both very influential in their time and both having had a great impact on history are Ronald Reagan and Woodrow Wilson. Both Presidents were advocates of peace even though they would not have hesitated to enter into a war if war was needed to insure the safety of the United States and Democracy as a whole. By use of small wars and political pressures both Reagan and Wilson, with the exception of Wilsons entering into WW-I, used diplomacy and these small conflicts to do what they thought was best and righteous to defend freedom and Democracy. But were they truly righteous individuals or did they just have their own ideas and agendas of what was best?

The late 19th century to early 20th century is characterized as the Progressive Era. This is when reformers strived for better welfare policies and more rights for the people. Although three presidents reigned during this movement, only two are known for their policies. It may look this way at first, but the picture actually shows much more than what might be seen at first glance. There is a two documents that Wilson is seen holding in the picture. One of those documents clearly says, “Congress the war declaring body called to convene,” and has the date April 2 printed on it. The other document that Wilson is holding in his other hand says, “American ships sunk without warning, american lives lost. The second document that Wilson is holding that details the sunk american ships is clearly referring to the Lusitania, which was sunk without warning on May 7, 1915. This can also be seen as an example of Yellow Journalism which was heavily put into use at the time to rile up the americans and push the agenda of war. The other document says that congress is meeting to declare war. This is clearly alluding to president Woodrow Wilson calling congress to meet in April 2, 1917. What makes this obvious is the date that can be seen written on the document. What ties these two documents together is the fact that the U.S was pulled into the war because of the sinking of the Lusitania. Woodrow signing the document to call congress to convene while holding the news of the sinking of the Lusitania only shows that he has retaliation in mind. Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt were two of America’s great presidents. This is why I feel that both men were equally important in what they did and said they would do. Both in their own ways have added a little of what makes this country what it is today. Both had their own beliefs of how reform, empowerment of the people and foreign policy should be accomplished. As president, the main goal was to do what they felt best for the American people. In doing so, how different could they really be?

Two great men, two great presidents, led our nations to excellency and great success. Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson were hard working, intelligent men who were very familiar, but were also different in many aspects. Through their dedication to our country and their passion of politics they have made our country better.

On April 2, 1917, President Wilson wrote and spoke one of his famous speech: War Message. President Wilson wants to ensure the people 's hope and faith from the war. As President Wilson (1917) stated in his speech "Each nation must decide for itself how it will meet it... Our motive will not be revenge or the victorious assertion of the physical might of the nation, but only the vindication of right, of human right, of which we are only a single champion."was to fix the issue the nation was in. President Wilson wants to show the people that we need to get involved war for the loss of many American lives that Germany took. Wilson persuades to Congress to go to war. President Wilson shows his persuasion effectively by using rhetorical strategies. Each strategy he used gave more persuasion to Congress to declare war on Germany. All the persuasion he used to convince Congress was put in his famous speech War Message.

The people in the cartoon are John A. MacDonald and Alexander Mackenzie. Johan A. MacDonald was the first prime minister of Canada and Alexander Mackenzie was the second prime minister of Canada. b) Alexander Mackenzie seems to be angry about something that John A. MacDonald did or said. I know this because of the way Makensy is standing (tall and powerful, with his arms behind him) and by the angry look on his face. John A. MacDonald seems sad or upset.
