Abstract: The ambiguous sentence is referred that a language segment has more than one semantic interpretations. This article tries to make a further research of the ambiguous phenomenon from the perspective of TG grammar and to give the cognitive-differentiation of the syntactic ambiguous sentence which enable us to have a complex and accurate understanding of the sentence structure. The author tries to make the contrastive analysis of the ambiguity of English and Chinese sentence from the perspective of the TG grammar to find the similarity and the difference between these two languages which may bring something new to this field of research. Key words: contrastive analysis, TG grammar, English ambiguous sentence, Chinese ambiguous sentence 1. Introduction The ambiguous phenomenon of sentence refers that one same …show more content…
The Syntactic Ambiguity in Chinese The ambiguities in Chinese could be analyzed from three perspectives: structure, semantic and semantic structure. The structure of the Chinese is simpler than English, but more meaningful which account for the main reason of the ambiguity. 3.1. Ambiguities Caused by the Structure of the Sentence Based on the immediate constituent analysis of Chomsky, Lu Jianming and Shen Yang raise the concept of “the hierarchy of the phrase structure” which says that the syntactic structure is the linear sequence of words superficially. However, the combination degree of words is different in the same syntactic structure, the combination of the different parts of the sentence obeys certain rules, but not the simple combination of one word with the next word. Examples are shown below: Example 1: Woai du jindai li shishu.(我爱读近代历史书) In example 1, two different interpretations could be reached: one is that “jindai” and “li shi” both are the attribute to modify “shuji”, the other is that “jindai” and “li shi” combined to form a new adjective “jindai li shi” to modify “shuji”. Example 2:
How we form and describe a sentence plays a major role towards determine the meaning of the sentence. This results in making each sentence very important to structure correctly so as to harness the most powerful meaning from the words used on the sentence (Iny 2006). To understand how word structure affects a sentence, we shall examine 5 sentences from a paper “the Purpose of Government written by Anon. A. Moss.

After identifying the basic structure of a message, a critical thinker must ask, “What words or phrases are ambiguous?” (p. 40) An ambiguous word or phrase is one that has multiple possible meanings. Ambiguous words or phrases in an argument create the need for clarification of the meaning before a reader can fully evaluate the argument.
A Contrastive Study of Lexical Cohesion in the Chinese and English Version of The Sight of Father’s Back, published by Zhang Xiaocui, has put forward that lexical cohesion not only helps to keep loyal to the original text, but retains the cohesion in the version’s discourse.[5] Moreover, A Comparative Analysis of Stylistic Language in the Chinese and English Version of The Sight of Father’s Back provided by Du Hua indicates that through careful selection of words, meticulous choose of sentences and overall comprehension of discourse style, Mr. Zhang Peiji’s version has surpassed the bondage of surface structure of the original text and achieved similarity in
Denotation is the primary meaning of a word. In contrast connotation is an additional idea to the primary meaning. Hitselberger dislikes the world “fighting” by it’s connotation meaning. The denotation meaning of the word “fighting” is the act of responding with violence to a conflict. In this article, there were two connotation definitions of “fighting” one is fighting against yourself due to something you dislike about who you are, not a physical fight but a mental challenge. The second meaning is fighting against what you believe is wrong. Again not physically but rather with words and actions that will change the thinking and beliefs of others to the benefit of you and/or society. Fighting is not always an act of violence, but rather it
He makes an important hypothesis that universal grammar (UG). UG is a characterization of these innate principle of language faculty, I-language. (5) He then postulates some detailed structure of UG. It is a system of conditions on grammars, constraints on the form and interpretation of grammar at all levels, from the deep structures of syntax, through the transformational component, to the rules that interpret syntactic structures semantically and phonetically. The study of linguistic universals, which is classified as formal or substantive, is the study of the properties of UG for a natural language. (6) Substantive universals concern the vocabulary for the description of language and a formal linguistic universal involve the character of the rules that appear in grammars and the ways in which they can be interconnected. Language-acquisition device uses primary linguistic data as the empirical basis for language learning to meet explanatory adequacy that is defined in UG, and to select one of the potential grammars, which is permitted by UG.
In order to critically analyze an issue, you need to be able to recognize which words or phrases are ambiguous and determine if you accept the author’s definition of them (Browne & Keeley, 2015). This will help you decide if you agree with the author’s conclusion.
The most impact revision for my essay was posing my interpretive problem as a question. I often struggle trying to practice generosity and addressing ambiguity in my essays mainly because I am not sure how to approach those issues. As a a result, my writing can sometimes come across as too definitive without considering other instances, which ultimately weakens my overall argument. By posing my interpretive problem as a question, I was able to rework my essay so that I introduce my overall claim in a timely manner that fits the progression of my paper rather than immediately stating my claim in the beginning. Moving forward with other academic writing, I have embrace ambiguity in my piece as it strengthen my overall argument. To ensure success
One of the most important personalities in the cognitive psychology who studied the garden path effect is Lyn Frazier who is a Linguistics professor at the University of Massachusetts. His garden path model of syntactic parsing influenced many linguists in their studies about the lexical and syntactical ambiguity in our language. In his book “The sausage machine”, Frasier claims that the longer a sentence, the more grammatical rules needed to be applied. With each word added to a simple phrase, the structure of the sentence becomes more complicated and more time is spent in trying to understand the meaning of it. The smaller the
Some linguistic models try to explain the development of second language acquisition. The three most common models are (1) the Universal Grammar Model, (2) the Competition Model, and (3) the Monitor Model. The Universal Grammar Model refers to the system of principles, conditions, and rules that are properties or elements of all human languages. At the same time, each language has grammatical rules that vary from one language to another. Thus, Chomky states that different languages have a limited possibility of different grammatical structures (1975). Therefore, second language learners base their second language acquisition on universal principles common to all languages, and on the force of the particular rules of each language. All of those can be concluded that as a human, especially as children, we have vary form of rules in language, in this case is second language.
The concept of cohesion accounts for the essential semantic relations whereby any speech or writing is enabled to function as text. Cohesion is classified into different categories: lexical cohesion and reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction or what is called grammatical cohesion. These categories do not only have a theoretical basis as distinct type of cohesive relations but also provide a practical mean for describing and analyzing texts. Each of these categories is represented in the text by practical features. Undoubtedly there are other types of semantic relation within a text which are not represented in the concept of cohesion. However, cohesion is the most important type of semantic relation because it is common to every kind of text and it is what makes a text text. (Halliday&Hassan,1976,p.13)
Under the Minimalist Program, Chomsky (1995) formulated a new theory of phrase structure, that replaces the X-Bar Theory and it does not have bar levels. Chomsky called it Bare Phrase Structure (BPS). This is one of the most radical changes to shift from the top-down generation process under X-Bar Theory to bottom-up structure building operation Merge. In this section, first we will restate the phrase structure rules under Standard Theory and their order, X-Bar Theory and its fundamental properties. Then we will talk about how the X-Bar Theory reduced to Bare Phrase Structure in the Minimalist Program. Bare Phrase Structure is considered one of the fundamental developments under Minimalism. Although, as mentioned by Lohndal (2012) it has some
There are numerous reason to why omissions are made either deliberately or accidental by interpreters during interpretations, My aim is to in order to gain a deeper insight into why and how these omissions are produced and reveal the impact these have in the interpretation.
The syntactic theory or syntax of language dates back in history in the 1950s by Chomsky (Math’una, 2009). The word 'syntax' is derived from the Greek word 'syntaxis', meaning 'together' and 'sequence'. The term is used for the way in which words are put together in an orderly system to form phrases or sentences (Allahabad, 2010). Therefore, for the non-expert, word order is the most remarkable thing about syntax (Bickerton, 2009). In fact, you could debate that word order is a secondary symptom, necessitated by the fact that we have only a single channel of speech, forcing words to be produced in a total order, and that word order falls out merely from reading the terminal nodes of a hierarchical tree structure. The most vital thing about
The purpose of this section is to analyze the decreasing value of the production in frequency between the three types of the bigram syntactic sequences and the three types of the trigram syntactic sequences in order to test Hypothesis 2 which was proposed for this study. Hypothesis 2 denotes that, in the learner’s corpus, as compared to the reference corpora, the production rate of the articles is lower in the NPs which have an adjective preceding a noun (Art + Adj + N) than noun phrases which have no preceding adjective (Art + N),
