The usage of technology has both positively and negatively affected individuals especially in our modern society. Through the advancement of electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and computers, the continuous development and popularity of social networking sites, and the growing number of users of various ages, our society has become convenient yet obsessive and lethargic than many years prior to our generation. It seems we cannot live a day without smartphones, without Internet, without mp3 players, and without cars. As our life becomes more dependent and reliant on technology, we become accustomed to such behavior of using technology habitually; and without these, we would be breaking our current patterns of living, thus making ourselves psychologically unstable in terms of feeling anxious and obsessed. Hence, though our means of communication might have become more convenient, it seems our face-to-face interaction and human communication skills have worsened in terms of social relations. Members of society understand, or at least have heard someone in their lives say, technology is becoming a distraction to the human population rather than an advancement. As technology has progressed, it has increasingly become a larger and more intergraded part of our everyday lives. Americans think that technology is huge today, but technology will be even more advanced in several decades. There are some clear positives to technology, such as the ease of long distances communication and the accessibility of entertainment. Despite those useful aspects and many others, there are many people that think technology has a negative effect on human interaction. The main concern many people are discussing is whether technology has negatively affected how humans socially interact. If those concerns are truly a problem, how can society fix them without stopping the advancement in technology.

Technology surrounds us. Like water in the ocean, people are swimming in technology each and every day. My friend was traveling across the United States recently and when they were waiting at an airport, they noticed that everyone was on their phone. A room of approximately two hundred people and everyone was on their phone. Ten years ago, that room would have most likely been full of face-to-face communication and flowering with new connections instead of being silent and void. We need to spend time away from the use of technology and use that time to connect with others instead of being cooped up in our own worlds. Technology has caused people to be constantly distracted, stressed, diagnosed with sleep disorders, lacking social skills and left addicted to the many parts of electronics.

The use of technology can be a great help to people in communicating, reducing the time it takes. Technology such as email especially electronic email enables people to communicate with each other regardless of time and distance. The ability to release information to many different people at once, without calling a meeting or requiring printing of the materials, turned into a money- and – time – saving device. Therefore, people who makes use of technology gets to communicate with friends, families and strangers from all over the world.

Imagine a world full of people who are glued to their technological devices and oblivious to the present life.Let's take a moment to stop and think about how many times we tend to check our smartphones, post a status or upload a photo. For me this would be roughly five hours a day which means that I unconsciously dedicate five hours of my present life to a screen when really those hours could be dedicated to spending time with family and friends or reading a book. Many people tend to claim that technology has benefitted our lives for the better however, what they don’t see is the fact that it has taken away the most valuable part of our lives which is human interaction. It seems as if we as millennials, are becoming more comfortable with being alone while being connected 24/7. Technology is machinery and equipment which is developed from the application of scientific knowledge, and the invention of new tools that make the process of living a little easier. All this technology is great and keeps our society moving forward, but indeed it does come at a cost. By examining the Anthropological, Sociological, and Psychological approaches, one can see that technology is beneficial to society but does come at a steep cost.
