Description The leadership project in course EL-7235, Workforce and Economic Development consisted of identifying a problem, trend, issue or innovation related to the workforce and economic development that affects community colleges. The problem, trend, issue or innovation was to be discussed in detailed, connecting to theory, policy and or practice used in the community college setting to address the selected topic. In addition, conducting a comprehensive review of literature concerning the topic and enhancing the review of literature with field research at a community college were included. Moreover, a presentation of the problem, trend, issue, or innovation research combined with the theory, policy, or findings on how research dealt …show more content…
Once, it was believed that the community colleges were for students who were seeking a terminal degree (i.e. nursing, auto motive or culinary art). Students would receive an Associates in Applied Science Degree. In addition, it was thought to be an institution that would transfer students to the senior college of their choice. Although, these are true statements, the community college is more than that – it is an institution that trains and educate the community in different manners. In the Continuing Education Division of the community college, the courses are flexible, and can be customized to an industry’s needs. It is appropriate to state that an enormous amount of customized training is through the community college. As a leader, one cannot focus only on the curriculum side “of the house” in the community college. They must have the ability to embrace the continuing education “side of the house” also. One reason the community college is unique is because of the plethora of courses offered and the customized training offered. There is no other higher education institution that can compare to the community colleges’ professionalism and excellent outcomes in training
Community college is a great institution for students to start their educational journey. Especially when they do not have the funds or lack some of the prerequisite that a university would require. Community college was created to serve the community, traditional and non-traditional students with the best higher education and lifetime learning opportunities. The faculty and staff members at a community college is there to provide leadership in education while going above and beyond to recognize the needs of the students and the community by providing excellent educational programs and support services that are available to all who have the opportunity to take advantage of them. “Student services now include recruitment and retention, counseling, student activities, student health, financial aid, academic support, career centers, transfer centers, and supplemental services such as transportation, child care, and services tailored for specific populations of students” (Cohen, Brawer, & Krisker, 2014, pg. 209). My philosophy in fulfilling the role and mission of the community college, is to establish the mission, vision, goals and values to guide all students on their journey to strive to become successful both in school and in today’s economy.
In the article “The Good That Community Colleges Do, Part 1”, author Rob Jenkins discusses the benefits and values of Community College. Recent studies have shown that the value of two-year colleges were hard to predict. In fact, one report shows that the value of a two-year degree is less than that of a high school diploma, while another report shows that most students are receiving a financial return on their degree. While Rob Jenkins believes both reports have valid points and arguments, he states that “so many of the things that community colleges do for their students and communities are difficult to measure empirically” (“The Good That Community Colleges Do, Part 1”).
The NL310 course has thus far presented me with a variety of topics, but the discussion about cognitive biases have resonated with me the most. I believe it has made a profound impact on me because I did not realize before how vulnerable I was to biases such as framing, confirmation trap, and the anchoring effect. Of these three biases, I think confirmation trap has the biggest influence on me. I sometimes find that when working with other mids, I look for information to confirm what I believe about them, usually regarding negative things . This has gotten me into situations in which I find it hard to sometimes find the good in people although I know it exists.
Although the community college’s mission has not changed, employment skills have changed. In order to yield tangible economic benefits to the community, community colleges have to start to think more creatively (Rockefeller Institute of Government, 2010). For over thirty years, community colleges has been the go-to reference for their role in economic development and services rendered to the community (American Community College, 2014).
If we look at the current perception of the community college, it is not a stepping stone any more, nor is it a feeder to the major university, it is a stagnate pond few make it out
Unlike Tennessee Promise, the new energy behind vocational training in Chicago is coming from the training institutions themselves. City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) is a network of seven two-year community colleges throughout the city. Though CCC was established over one hundred years ago, 2010 marked the beginning of their “Reinvention”—a campaign with four goals: “1) increase the number of students earning college credentials of economic value; 2) increase the rate of transfer to Bachelor’s degree programs following CCC graduation; 3) Drastically improve outcomes for students needing remediation; and 4) Increase number and share of ABE/GED/ESL students who advance to and succeed in college-level
Responding to stakeholders’ desire for more workforce related education; community colleges are changing. Christopher Mullin (2011) reports by 2020 there will be a person over 5 million between jobs and qualified workers. In 2013, Mullin and Kent Phillippe highlight that tomorrow’s jobs require advanced critical thinking across disciplines. Once held as gateways for some to enter into 4-year institutions, changes had to occur to meet the need of the communities served. Job
In the beginning, I felt as this English course was just another typical course with the purpose of allowing students to write more essays without the use of creativity and acuity. However, as I ventured deep into the course, I found my original opinion to be biased. Throughout my spiritual journey in ENGL 1304, I not only learned many concepts and new ideas along the way, but I was also able to connect with all my readings. From researching my online sources to constructing a coherent argument, I grasp the process of communicating my voice for each assignment through careful observation and visualization. As a result, I was able to write my essays in a more personal manner. It also led me to stray away from the concept of “just writing anything
Every community college plans for success by creating a vision and mission. The vision is the long-term goals of the college, and the mission is the work put in to attain that vision. The faculty completes the work that is put in everyday and is the most important piece in the college. To meet the vision of post-secondary educational success, the college will need professionals of the highest quality. For this reason, numerous studies have been done on the staff that fills the community colleges and how they are the core group that makes the college what it is. The faculty
Another fond professor is Catherine Skura; she teaches Economics. Catherine declares that students will be able to potentially receive a certificate in a program instead of the associate degree, however, if they wanted the whole associate they would be able to complete he course work for the associates as well. Because students desire to have a "fast fix," student will rather the certificate in a program, more than the associate. She insists that there will be more technological programs (e.g., mapping and GPS technology). In twenty years, community colleges will be supporting programs such as, Green Technology – energy saving programs. Robotics will become more fascinating and enormously big in the community colleges. Federal dollars may be the community colleges main financial support. However, state will support as well, but may not support as much as the federal government. Hence, community
It has been well over a year since I last visited and ran the Newbsanity course and I was very much aware they have added several new cool and challenging obstacles so I was very excited to have the chance to return for the fun Zombie Mud Gauntlet race.
I am Ashik. I am originally from India, but have been living in US for 10 years now. I am a senior majoring in Information Technology concentrating on server infrastructure and networking. The reason I am taking this course is because it is a requirement. However, I have never taken any philosophy related course so I am looking forward to learning something new.
I’ve learned a lot of useful tips from this semester in ENG 201. English has never been my strong suit nor has it been my favorite class. However this college course has changed my point of view of the subject. Prior coming into college I viewed English as a useless class because I’ve already knew the basics: how to talk, read and write essays. Today I view English as an important class. It helped me in other courses that involved writing, such as World Civilization and Communications, because it allowed me to practice my skills. In my world civilization exams I had to write essays. This course helped me write an impactful essay. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that almost all of my exam scores were in the 90s, usually I do poorly in the
Community colleges serve many functions in the American higher education system. They serve local populations, offer foundational coursework, and serve as the home of many occupational training programs (Dougherty & Townsend, 2006). Recently, a new function has emerged: the granting of baccalaureate degrees, also known as the community college bachelor’s degree (CCB). This type of degree was established in 2001 by the state of Florida and is continuing to gain popularity throughout North America (Bemmel, Floyd, & Bryan, 2008).While there are several critics of the CCB (Eaton, 2005; Levin, 2004; Wattenberger, 2000), most of the literature is supportive of
