Sex sells. We’ve all heard this before, so it’s nothing new, but a good advertiser is always aware that sex can also offend – so you have to tread a very fine line. The ad we are deconstructing, a print ad for Covergirl cosmetics, walks that line very well and is setting them up to reap the benefits of another well-planned advertising campaign. Covergirl is a heavyweight in the world of cosmetics that has been used for decades by women and girls alike, and as such they are very skilled at appealing to everyone within that very wide demographic. The advertisement we are looking at is a full page print ad for a new Covergirl product that appeared in a recent ladies fitness magazine. While the specific product being sold here is a new type of foundation (more about that in a moment), more than two-thirds of the page is actually just a large photo of country songstress Taylor Swift ‘making eyes’ at the camera (and us, of course) with her hands placed gracefully behind her head. She’s wearing a delicately ruffled dress in the softest pink …show more content…
If it weren’t for the Covergirl logo that appears in delicate, soft green print across the top of Taylor’s photo, I would think that she was what’s for sale. But that’s kind of the point: Taylor Swift is a well-known and generally very well liked entertainer who appeals to a broad range of people. She is sweet and young and very attractive, but not over the top or overly adult, keeping her safe and accessible for a younger demographic. Who could ask for more? She is the epitome of the fine line we mentioned earlier – just the right balance between sexy and sweet and able to appeal to a wide range of women, women who have plenty of money to spend in the cosmetics industry, and a smart ad knows that. The product is of course mentioned to us at the bottom of the ad, so they are selling us make up; they just got us ‘in the door’ by selling us a little Taylor
Covergirl has spent an extensive amount of money and time to reach its first position, in the cosmetics market. To reach first position the company spends millions of dollars on marketing campaigns, which include television sponsorships and advertisements. Covergirl cosmetics are the official sponsor of the reality television show, America’s Next Top Model (Niti, 2014). The winners of the show have modeled for the
Advertisements are everywhere, combining images and words together to create a message to sell a product. The initial impression is that the advertisers are just trying to sell their products, but there often seems to be an underlying message. It is often heard that “sex sells.” So, many advertisers will use beautiful women and men in their advertisements to try to market a product. The hope is that “sex will sell,” and people will go out and buy what the ads are selling. There are many advertisements and commercials that use this approach. Prime examples of this are the advertisements for Orbit Gum and A Diamond is Forever. Also, the commercials for Levi jeans use sex to promote the sale of their brand. As a way to
In most commercial advertisements on television, women show more skin than men. Commercials use women to sell sex because it attracts more attention than men showing their bodies. For instance, Britney Spears, a singer whom many teenagers admire, appeared in a music commercial for Z100, the number one radio station in New York. Z100 promotes commercially hot music in modes such as pop, rock, and R&B. In Z100’s new commercial, Britney Spears is wearing a beige outfit consisting of a tight tube top and small shorts that accent her chest and buttocks. After talking for a moment, she starts dancing with her back facing the camera. Viewers are visually drawn to the shape of her body. As spokesperson for Z100, Britney Spears is being used as a marketing tool to attract men and increase ratings. Z100 could have had a popular male in its commercial. Instead the company’s executives chose a popular woman known for her hourglass figure because men prefer to look at young, shapely, nubile women.
Advertisements are all over the place. Whether they are on TV, radio, or in a magazine, there is no way that you can escape them. They all have their target audience who they have specifically designed the ad for. And of course they are selling their product. This is a multi billion dollar industry and the advertiser’s study all the ways that they can attract the person’s attention. One way that is used the most and is in some ways very controversial is use of sex to sell products
The Cover Girl ad from March 2011 includes a picture of Queen Latifah in a beige like colored background with her green eye shadow on. Queen Latifah has small brown eyes with very long and luscious black eye lashes. She has a big and beautiful smile with shiny white and straight teeth. Queen Latifah also has a nice pair of small, gold, round dangling earrings in her ears. The word “Cover Girl” is displayed in big and bold green letters across her forehead, all to help improve her the way she looks. Queen Latifah is written in small green letters underneath in the right-hand corner right underneath the word “Cover Girl”. This picture of her is from her head to her shoulders, just enough for the viewers to focus on Cover Girl’s product, which is the makeup. You cannot really tell what type of shirt she is wearing in this photo but the little piece of frill coming off of her shoulder matches pretty well with the whole color scheme of the ad. She also has her hair pulled back into a long pony tail to also help show off their product even more. This advertisement by Cover Girl effectively uses logos, ethos, and pathos to convince the viewers to buy Cover Girl products.
In this ad, an Ethos or ethical appeal has a great impact using Taylor Swift as the “credible” actor, a famous American singer, and a songwriter. She’s attractive and has a beautiful clear skin. To the girls viewing this ad, it seems like Taylor uses the Covergirl foundation to give her that flawless skin making her face feel light weighted.
Advertising is everywhere, it’s online, billboards, magazines, and the most popular television. Different advertising are mostly targeting towards a certain gender, age, or interests. Covergirl advertising is mostly targeted at women, and is also seen in every place you can think of. You most likely could go up to any girl and ask her-what is the Covergirl slogan? Easy, Breezy, Beautiful, Covergirl. Covergirl has done a great job at advertising there make-up products. Covergirl has branched out to every type of advertising there is. They have commercials, bill boards, online ads, there in many magazines, and they are also being promoted on the poplar show America’s Next Top
Gender role bias in advertisements has been so prevalent for so long that the untrained eye wouldn't even discern it. All the same, these biases, for the most part, put women in subordinate positions and men in dominant ones. This assumption on both the genders is unfair and demeaning. These ads portray women as subservient and play toys for men. Not only do the models depict an image nowhere near close to reality, but their bodies are scantily clad and what few clothes they are wearing are very revealing.
Everyone has heard the phrase “sex sells.” It seems to be a major factor that drives people to buy. Advertisers manipulate this behavior by creating ads that showcase their products as a way to gain love, beauty, and desirability. Advertisers frequently use sex appeal with flirtatious images as an attention grabbing device to play with the public’s emotions. Because the public is a diverse group of individuals, it is difficult to target the masses by focusing on hobbies, sports, or flaws. Because of this, advertisers target sexuality, something everyone can relate to. In the February, 2016 issue of Cosmopolitan Magazine, they overtly demonstrate this. In an ad for Kinky Vodka, they represent multiple sexual innuendoes such as provocative body posing, stereotypical feminine colors, and seductive wording.
This is Beyonce’s fragrance so it makes sense that Beyonce is the model for it. Since Beyonce is a worldwide phenomenon that many people look up to, she really grabs the audience’s attention by being in the ad. Not only is Beyonce a brand of her own, she is also a very attractive woman. Beyonce attracts men with this ad because she is Beyonce and the sexy glance that she is giving. She also lures women in with this glance because they see Beyonce looking like Beyonce and they think that if they get the same perfume that Beyonce uses, they will be sexy like she is. She is using ethos by including herself in this ad which shows that this product is a reliable and credible because Beyonce herself is using the product and being her own spokesperson/advocate for the product. This is personal branding which really works well for this ad because this is Beyonce’s product and it shows just how reliable this product
In the ad there is the custom of bright colors that is used in a soft way lot to get some kind of interaction and effect with the audience and the product itself because it “confirms that purchasing intent is greatly affected by colors due to the impact they have on how a brand is perceived”(Ciotti) meaning “colors influence how consumers view the "personality" of the brand.” (Ciotti) And from the looks of the personality of the brand it was known that Cover Girl has been out for a long time and knows what makes it a popular makeup brand that has made color affects a big part of their brand they used in their advertisements and

Everyday we expose ourselves to thousands of advertisements in a wide variety of environments where ever we go; yet, we fail to realize the influence of the implications being sold to us on these advertisements, particularly about women. Advertisements don’t just sell products; they sell this notion that women are less of humans and more of objects, particularly in the sexual sense. It is important to understand that the advertising worlds’ constant sexual objectification of women has led to a change in sexual pathology in our society, by creating a culture that strives to be the unobtainable image of beauty we see on the cover of magazines. Even more specifically it is important to study the multiple influences that advertisements have
The appearance of these models is the primary concern of the ads and entails many different elements. Every model portrays a different characteristic through the pose they are in and the clothes that they wear. One ad depicts a sexy young woman who shows confidence by extending her arms out and exposing her flat stomach. Her hips are thrust to the left side, her long beautiful hair is gently blown back, and her facial expression and eye contact hint at sexual desire or acceptance of the viewer. Another female model also has her hips out to the left, but her hands express a different idea. While one hand is used to play with her hair, the other is up to her face with her pointer finger right below her bottom lip. Her hair partly covers her eyes and with her head slightly down, she comes off as shy but confidant. The confidence comes from her exposed stomach and direct eye contact that she makes with the viewer. These two women are somewhat opposite in how they come off which shows that Calvin Klein is trying to appeal to what different guys look for and appreciate in a woman.
The advertisement speaks to the reader in a soft, familiar, enticing language as though she (and it is a female) is alone in the room with you. Although the advertisement mentions as an aside that the product is also patented for men, we receive the strong impression that it is the female who has been targeted as prospective market. This is due to the picture used, as well as colors, words, and situation. The colors are mostly lilac consisting of soothing pink, cream and purple all feminine associated colors. The picture is of a seductive woman, vibrant with health, hair falling into eye, bra straps peeking out, who smiles flashing her pearl teach at you, appearing the picture of health.
