Criminal justice is a topic that i have wanted to study since i was a little boy. I always found it to offly exciting to work with criminals and investigate their crimes. However what i really want to do with my degree is to not only work with criminals, but to help them get back on their feet and back into society. Thus, saying i want to become a probation officer for the federal government. Reason being is that i feel that with my degree and a minor in psychology i will be best suited for the job of a probation officer. However the work task of a probation officer is pretty tedious, from 40- 60 case loads a week depending on where you reside at. I am currently a senior this year and will be graduating at the end of May with the Class of 2016. I will be attending Dixie State University this Fall 2016. My intended major is Criminal Justice with emphasis in Corrections. I have always been interested in the Criminal Justice system, the way they use evidence to solve hard cases and how much Criminal Justice can make a difference to society. My chosen career path is to become a Juvenile probation officer. Juvenile probation officers work with youths that have been placed on probation and or have been court order to attend an alternative consequence school to continue their education. Most juvenile probation officers work with youths at a particular stage of their probation process, for an example supervision or investigation. This paper will cover information on the juvenile justice system and my career choice by touching bases with my interviewee a Juvenile Probation Officer Shelvin McGill the agency he is employed with as well as its clientele, I will also speak on the job description and responsibilities, his theory-of-use, and briefly touch on why he chooses this line of work, and his educational background.
When I first started college, my academic goals were to learn as much as possible, join a Christian fellowship, get into the criminal justice program, decide whether or not to go to graduate school, and to graduate in four years. In addition, to also to either get a job or get accepted into an internship. My overall goal was to enjoy and make the most out of my college experience. My career goals back when I was a freshman, were to figure out if I want to join law enforcement or go to law school and find a job in the field of criminal justice, while being happy working the job. 7/20 at 8:45am worker received a phone call from Todd, Crystal's probation officer. Todd stated that the surveillance officer received information that Crystal is still associating with drug court clients. Todd stated that the surveillance officer went out to the house and Crystal answered. Crystal needed to go pick someone up and would return home. At 11 pm there was no answer at Crystals door. Tood just received an email about Crystal engaging in several relationships with drug court men. Todd wanted to know how important the ACR was that day due to he was going to request an emergency court setup that afternoon. As we know, probation and parole officers play a major role in shaping an offenders perception of reality as well as changing their behavior. The question that many will ask is “is the role of the PO that of a social worker or cop?” In my opinion, probation and parole officers have a huge weight on their shoulders due to the caseloads that they receive. Since the recent police brutality cases the mentality of an officer needs to change with the times. I believe that officers should lean more towards being a social worker/cop because they should be able to gain common ground with citizens while keeping their best interest and public safety at heart. In working towards a BS in criminal justice I am aiming to ensure that my career opportunities will not be hampered by a lack of degree later in life. Additionally, by working through this degree I am able to further investigate this career path and better understand ways of thinking that tend to be used in these careers. My interest in criminal justice was initially just a passing one; however, while I matured, what had been merely a passing interest began to grow into a viable career path in my mind.
