I would only recommend her if I honestly believed she was capable of doing the job. I have a responsibility to myself as well as the company to see to it that any candidate I recommend is qualified. Otherwise, it’s waste of the company’s resources and could ultimately reflect badly on me. Do you share your suspicions with the committee? Suspicions are not facts. What if my suspicions turn out to be wrong? I would be doing my friend a disservice by presuming to know the details of why she was let go from her last job. It would be better to give her the benefit of the doubt and allow the interview process to provide the company with the information they need. How will you respond if she asks you to be a reference? I would be honest with her about my suspicions and discuss them with her. If after our discussion I felt that she would be a good fit for the company then I’d allow her to use me as a reference. Teaching higher order thinking skills is not a recent need. It is apparent that students, at all levels of education, are lagging in problem-solving and thinking skills. Fragmentation of thinking skills, however, may be the result of critical thinking courses and texts. Every course, especially in content subjects, students should be taught to think logically, analyze and compare, question and evaluate.
In Chapter 3, there were 12 areas of bias spread across the 3 areas of heuristics. The main theme of the text was to prove that we are predisposed to certain outcomes. As we make important decisions we rely on our memory, or a number of past events, or even ignoring facts. Overall, we are biased in many ways when it comes to making decisions, or predicting outcomes of a particular event.
The nurse manager I selected to interview is a Baccalaureate degree nurse and has attended several in-house training sessions related to her position within the hospital. She attended Lenoir Rhyne University to obtain her BSN and has been employed with the institution for 13 years and has been in nursing for nearly 20 years. She is currently certified as a Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) and is also a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. The "hero" of this movie appears to be Henry Fonda, the first juror to vote "not guilty". He kept challenging the evidence by saying "isn 't it possible?"...that the evidence was wrong. Do some critical thinking on this...using a good paragraph answer if "isn 't it possible?" is the same thing as "beyond a reasonable doubt." Start with a “yes” or “no” and then eleaborate.
Under these circumstances, I should not recommend my supervisor’s friend for the job. If my supervisor ask me why her friend was not recommended, then I would inform her that I did not want to influence the the search committee decision since the committee is doing the hiring. When my supervisor inform me that her call was not an effort to influence the search operation, then I would let her know right away that I am not in a position to influence the committee to hire her friend.
Critical thinking, in the context of employability, it is a broad term that encompasses the use of “problem solving, analysis, creative thinking, interpretation, and reasoning.” (Dash, “Why Critical Thinking Skills Are Essential in Business”) In other words, while there are varying definitions for critical thinking, it is generally considered a skill set with specific parameters. One of the necessary conditions within of this definition is that the idea to which the term ‘critical thinking’ is ascribed is a skill set. This is also considered a “key area” of professional development. (Joschik, “Well-Prepared in Their Own Eyes”) Furthermore, critical thinking is necessarily a mental process. This is due to the fact that each of the encompassed terms, such as problem solving and analysis, are mental processes. Finally, if the subject to which the term ‘critical thinking’ is being applied is “the ability to think clearly and rationally,” then the subject possesses the sufficient condition to be considered critical thinking.
