Critical Analysis
Problem Statement
In “Bundles to Prevent Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia: How valuable are they?,” Charity Wip and Lena Napolitano present the results of a qualitative study to determine the value of different care bundles in preventing the occurrence of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). In fact, the authors concede that VAP is often resultant of the ventilator care plan, and that the ventilator bundle would be critical in reducing the occurrence of VAPs among the intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Of important is the fact that a range of care bundles are present, each differing in its specific care process that focuses on VAP prevention and

An examination of the literature sources publication dates shows that six had been published in 1999 or earlier while the remaining 34 had been published in the following years. The relevance of the studies (considering that six were not current) was difficult to assess, although the fact that the study was of a qualitative nature shifts focus from their quantitative results and into their authoritative perceptions. Still, the use of quantitative findings from these publications could call into question their accuracy and how current they are since time is a factor that influences quantitative results. The fact that the authors did not indicate the weaknesses and strengths of the articles that were used is a negative against the research since readers are left to question the authentic nature of the studies and the authors objectively. This is because that authors could have only included what they deemed to support their opinions without regards to the research process thereby causing both Type I and Type II errors. Despite the shortcomings identified with regards to the literature review, it must be accepted that it included adequate information to allow readers to build a logical conclusion that matched that of the authors. This is particular true when it is considered that quantitative evidence was presented as evidence to support the different
On reading this article and identifying the study, there was a clear insight on how death and dying, and even improved health, impacted those nurses (Conte, 2014). Nurses, who worked closely with their patients, through the perils and suffering, culminating of death and losses, had grief not readily explored to enable that comfort zone (Conte, 2014).
To encourage physicians, ICU nurses, and respiratory therapist to use the ventilator associated pneumonia bundle in all ventilated patients in an intensive care unit.
Ventilator - associated pneumonia (VAP) is the second most common hospital acquired infection (HAI) and is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates for ventilated patients in intensive care units (Bingham, Ashley, Jong, & Swift, 2010). The VAP increases patients’ mortality rates, length of stay and hospital costs (Hiner, Kasuya, Cottingham, & Whitney, 2010). The VAP is the leading causes of death due to nosocomial infections and the
In the first article chosen, “Why are Nurses Leaving? Findings From an Initial Qualitative Study on Nursing Attrition,” the research method used was qualitative. The specific type of research design used was phenomenology. The participants were interviewed about their person experience of what it was like working as a registered nurse. The research question for this study was, “What is the experience of RNs who leave clinical nursing?” The sample is registered nurses (RN) with a minimum of 1 year of clinical practice and no clinical practice in the last 6 months. The sample size was ten, which were a majority of females (80%),
The qualitative approach to research is anchored in the ideographic tradition and seeks to focus on the insider's world and the meanings that are attached to behaviour. While this is a general view of qualitative studies each qualitative design has unique foci. Hudacek (2008) examined the concept of caring in the work of nurses using a phenomenological design. Phenomenology gives attention to the subjective social reality. It gives value to the individual experience of the actor even within highly structured organizations. It is through the everyday experiences that meaning is constructed. The use of phenomenology is therefore highly consistent with the attempt to understand the meaning of caring. The design and the stated purpose of the researcher are highly congruent. The researcher noted that the purpose of the study was to "describe the dimensions of caring." Phenomenology is useful for unearthing the individuals understanding of their own behavior and consequently the meaning they attach to particular actions.
The qualitative article being appraised is by Martin and Woods (2012) using the CASP tool qualitative framework (CASP 2013). These tools have been validated to ensure that studies can be assessed in a consistent way assessing the trustworthiness of the research article (Aveyard, 2014)

The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe how occupational therapists’ involved client-centred activities in daily living (CADL) in their practice. This was done by reviewing the therapist’s experiences and reflections about their interaction with clients that suffered from a stroke. The study involved coding of three categories. These categories included: 1) Sharing an understanding as the point of departure, 2) Sharing through experiences, and 3) Challenges in applying the CADL.
Described below is a critical appraisal of a qualitative article by Lisa Booth using the frame-work suggested by Ryan, Coughlan and Cronin 2007 to establish its believability, robustness, credibility and integrity (Ryan, Coughlan & Cronin, 2007).
o Review of related literature: In what ways does the literature review support the need for this study?
In this assignment, various research with regards to different agendas will be discussed and broken down into the approaches that were conducted and the results of these researches. The first study that will be analyzed will be; Factors Involved in Recovery from Schizophrenia: A Qualitative study of Thai Mental Health Nurses. The authors for this research study were; Kaewprom, Chettha; Curtis, Janette; Deane, Frank P. The main point of this study was to investigate international methods, such as those conducted in Thailand and compare and contrast them with American psychiatric approaches in order to improve the
In conclusion, this essay was dealt about a critical appraisal of qualitative study using CASP tool. By doing this module as a nursing student, this helped the author of this essay, to understand the importance of using the critical appraisal in the clinical practice. It also made the student nurse aware, by practicing the critical skills will help to improve the professional standard of competence according to the NMC code (2016). In order to improve the skills in the nursing practice, the student nurse decided to use a structure for her critical frame work, maintaining a reflective diary, and use the up to date evidence in the practice.
In the ICU, an area of practice that has seen improved patient outcomes is through the use of Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP) bundles. VAP is a pneumonia that affects patients who are on ventilation. It occurs when pathogens enter the patient’s lungs through the mouth, nose or throat. A ventilator strategy bundle was developed. In 1994, the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) revised the CDC Guideline for Prevention of Nosocomial Pneumonia to address VAP, as there was growing concern regarding the mortality and morbidity associated with healthcare related pneumonia. In the report, the VAP strategy bundle was developed and included in the bundle are: elevation head of bed to help prevent aspiration, oral
Literature reviews are an examination of a study to determine its credibility or worthiness and information significance extracted from the existing research data (Wakefield, 2014). Literature reviews summaries, critically analyses, evaluates and clarifies the study authors’ ideas. The researched information provides the literature reviewer a summarize rational argument that defends and helps to explain the new research question, based on related policy and practice identified by
