Cultural-psychosocial is a term used to explain how culture affects the psychology of a person in a social environment. With that said, in the United States, there are many cultural-psychosocial aspects that contribute to how people think, feel, and behave about human sexuality. Some examples include, but not limited to: religion, ethnicity, education-status, economic status, and mass media. This essay will focus more on how religion and mass media affect one’s own sexuality. Religion plays a major role in developing our sexually. The family greatly influences the role that religion has. The parents bestow their religious ideas and practices onto their children. For example; most religions say that it is a sin to masturbate, practice sex outside of marriage, and the act homosexuality is wrong in the eyes of God. Although these practices can influence a child on how they perceive sexually, not every child will follow their parents’ religious views. Furthermore; in this day and age people are looking at it as a guide rather than a way of life. In …show more content…
Thanks to mass media and society, sex is everywhere. Movies, TV shows, radio, magazines, and especially the internet can have sexual content on them. People of all ages are exposed and it can influence them greatly. For example, the internet has a wide variety of porn and with that many people can explore their sexual desires. Of course, the majority will be socially normal, but there might a couple of odd ones who are into some really kinky things like bondage, pain or humiliation. Another example is teenagers mimicking what they see or hear on television, music, and movies. Some teenagers might feel that it is okay to view women as nothing more that sexual objects or that it is okay to be sexually active with multiple people and so forth. In all mass media is a key player in shaping us sexually for better or for
The sexual behaviors religion deems moral, the levels of scientific understanding in sexual matters and what the media deems sexualy ideal all profoudly influence how a society view and behave with regards to sexuality. For example, if religion being a primary influence in a society deems sexualy activity to only be appropriate between a monogamous, married couple, and should only be talked about between those couples, then it’s likely individuals within that society will hold very conservative views on sex. Additionally, in a society with poor scientific understanding of human sexual behaviour and function, will be a perfect breeding ground for urban myths and misinformation, such as the idea that a woman’s hymen breaks when she loses her virginity. Conversely in a society where media is the primary influencer, of the society promotes and propagates objectifying views of women’s body, it’s more likely that the majority view of sex in that society is that it’s something that’s done by a man to a women, and that giving sex to a man is (or is one of several) a woman’s primary purpose.
Reflecting on this question, the influences of religion, science and media that may have an affect on the way I might view or think in regards to my sexuality, I find very interesting; the author’s view that we as individuals or society are influenced solely by these outside sources in our sexuality, my thoughts are different towards this. As a youth and young adult I would say yes there might have been a slight influence directed by the media (music), but today as an adult I feel no influence at all from theses forms of direct sources to my sexuality. This could be because society is over run and conditioned by the media and what is constantly in our faces, by television, radio, advertisement and other forms that we do not notice anymore becoming
Select a topic that interests you. Introduction. Media has great influence over the way people live their lives. The question is, do media or culture influence sexual orientation?
As children grow up, they are exposed to changes in their body and physiology. Adults, family, schools, and friends influence them and teach them about the world and the changes they are going to experiment, but how does an adult approach children and teenagers about sex? New ideas and debates have formed concerning how to educate the youngsters on the topic of sex: whether parents should explain their children about the birds and the bees, or schools need a course to educate students about sexual activity. This paper is going to examine sex education from different perspectives: psychology, education, and religion studies. Sex education is instruction on issues regarding human sexuality, emotions, responsibilities, anatomy, sexual intercourse, reproduction, health issues, rights, how to practice safe sex, sexually transmitted diseases, sexual organs, or everything related to human reproduction and sex. Almost four out of ten young women get pregnant before the age of twenty (hhs.gov), and nearly twenty million new cases of sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s) come from people in between fifteen and twenty-four years old (hhs.gov), and most of them state they were uniformed or not prepared. The topic of sex has been a taboo subject in various cultures throughout the years because many parents are unwilling or unable to properly educate their children about sex, forcing them to seek out less credible sources. If schools are permitted to teach sex education, then they can
If adolescents see an unrealistic thin or a muscle toned body alot, it can have a huge impact on their body image and dieting behavior. “Body image ideals in the media have increased teenagers’ and some adults the desire for plastic surgery” (Raising Children, 2015). Seeing media that is violent in some ways can often enough make it more likely that someone will behave in a violent way, it can also influence other unhealthy or risky behavior, like smoking, drinking alcohol and taking other drugs. Other more powerful influences include family and friends. “Teen are twice as likely to have sex or engage in sexual acts if they see similar sexual behavior in the media. Many objects in the media that involve sex target teens” (Ransohoff, 2013). Reality TV shows and teen dramas often portray the popular or cool kids as the ones who are having sex so seeing it on TV might make teenagers think it is ok. In the movie when Caroline throws a party at Jakes house after a dance, everyone got drunk, they were all under age because they were all in high school and then most of them drove home drunk, some teens may think its ok to do this when its not at all
* For teens, television is a major source of information about sex. A survey conducted in 1997 by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that 61 per cent of young teens, ages 13-15, rated entertainment media as their top source of information on sexuality and sex health. This should concern parents because although two-thirds of TV shows contain sexual content, only one in ten includes any reference to safe sex or the consequences of unprotected sex.
Human sexuality is a common phrase for all, and anything, pertaining to the feelings and behaviors of sex for the human race. Sexuality has been a topic that has been discussed and studied for as far back as 1000 years B.C. and is still being studied today. As the discussion of sexuality has progressed through history, theories have been created based on research and experiments that scholars have implemented, based on their own perceptions of human behavior. Out of the many theories that pose to explain sexual behavior, Sexuality Now explained ten that are seemed to be the most overlapped, and built off of theories. Of these theories, two that were discussed in the text were the behavioral and sociological theory. These two theories cover some of the basic ideas of what could possibly influence a person’s sexuality.
Sexuality and sex in America is a complicated subject in that there is little consensus on the topic of sex in, and the American media sends many mixed messages regarding sex and sexuality to everyone, not just to adolescents. Americans are aware of sex primarily through advertising (print media, commercials, etc.) as sex is used to sell anything and everything. The media also bombards Americans with sexuality and sex on television and in films. The sexuality of teenagers is not a straightforward issue in America either. Many parents do not discuss sex or sexuality with their children. There have been ongoing debates as to whether sexuality should be taught as part of school curricula because there are such a great deal of adolescents participating in reckless and/or dangerous sexual behaviors, largely because they are grossly uneducated about sex. The paper will reference the film Juno and other texts as a meditation on the relationship between adolescent sexuality and the media.
There are many things that influence a person’s sexuality, ecspecially teenagers. This is correct because teenagers, want so badly to fit in. They want to be the in crowd not the out crowd. We the society is in the middle of major changes, people are starting to see the world differently and what we use to see as reality, is no longer what the younger generation is seeing as reality. Reality has changed because sex is no longer seen as just the “cool”, thing to do, but has almost come to be understood as a rite of passage To teenagers it seems as when they become sexually active, then they have become an actual member of society. I believe television is one of the main causes for the change in society. Television is a twenty-four hours activity, that brain washes teenagers
Research has greatly indicated and proven that media exposure has an impact on the normative perceptions of substance use and relationship behaviors among adolescents. Studies have shown that media content and patterns of usage are considerably related to adolescent perception of gender roles, romantic relationships, and sexual behavior. Repeated contact or subjection to sexualize subject matter on television or different forms of media has been related to individuals perceived normative gender roles (Herrett- Skjellum & Allen, 1996). Negative and socially impaired beliefs about relationships, for example such as ‘‘fate brings soul-mates together, disagreement is destructive to a relationship, partners should be able to sense each other’s thoughts and feelings’’ (Holmes, 2007). Also with persistent disclosure to sexually explicit content related with more positive attitudes or norms toward “uncommitted sexual exploration” as well (Brown and Bobkowski, 2011).
Some of the influences listed in the question include the following: - Religion; - Family Traditions; - The media, such as newspapers or broadcast news; - Society; - Entertainment media, like movies and television; and - Social media, similar to Twitter or Facebook, etc. Other influences on perspectives regarding human sexuality encompass the following: - Parental influence; - Peers; - Health-related issues like birth control or diseases; - Abusive sex crimes such as rape and sexual harassment; - Legal and ethical issues; - Value systems; - Stage of life; - Race; - Gender; and - Sexual orientation
Teens are being sexaually pressed through television entertainment, having sex is everywhere they look. Since the start of the 21st Century sexaul material in television has more than tripled. “Oral sex, never mentioned during the 1989 study period, was alluded to 20 times during four weeks in 1999. References to kinky sex rose from 13 mentions to 60 mentions. Specific references to genitalia during prime time have risen 700%.”(Bozell) It has gotten so bad that cable companies now have parental controls in their cable boxes. 20 years ago, it started with hints towards sex and now on HBO they show the women breast and show the act of having sex but thankfully leaves out show male genitalia. In shows like Scandal, True Blood and Game of Thrones: sex is portrayed as no big deal an adventurous journey you should share with as many people you want even if you 're not in
Some argue that teen sexuality is based on the resources and access to sexual content that they have accessible , but is sexuality something that is taught or something that is developed naturally inside humans at all different ages and stages of life? I did a survey on students at my school , and from the research I learned that most males feel that they became sexually active after coming across pornography and other sexually related media. Female students felt as if sexuality was something that came naturally to them without prior sexual exposure. From this analysis , I came to the conclusion that human sexuality starts at adolescence. As children and teens grow and develop , the sexual parts on their body become an interest to them. They may want to know what they are there for, why they need to be covered up at all times, how should they use them, or whether or not they should be used at all. Has media influenced sex in teenagers to be experienced at a younger age, well of course it has. Peer influence plays a very large role in how teens react to sex. When this information is based upon the logic of a teenager like myself, it actually seems to be true. Most of the things in my generation revolves around chain reaction. When one person get a certain pair of shoes in school, someones
Mass media makes people standardized the sexuality and people’s point of view by providing sensitive environment everywhere. Movie is the most common sexual environment and the easiest way for directors earn profits. Since something appears in front of people regularly, people will get bore about that or they are too similar with that. What people are looking for sexual in mass media has been changed and their sexual behavior also changed. According to one of projects of Keren Eyal and Dale Kunkel about the effect of sex in Television with adult has result that people get effect and influence by mass media products as sex sell. In this article, the researchers make an experiment about how sexual and mass media related. By letting freshman college year randomly pick up either positive or negative sexual portrayed or in the movie. The researcher found out that people who decided to choice the negative consequences of sex leads to more negative attitudes than other people. The researcher also performed experiment and prove that people with negative consequences of sex are going toward premarital intercourse and to more negative moral judgments in their characters and behavior. Their negative attitude behavior effect their relationship in their marriage in the future. The mass media provide a new environment for them to enjoy their sex life. Men and women are looking for hot people on the videos and movies before actually look at the contents. People become rude persons and
Negative effects of Mass Media for teenagers, The exposure of sex images and excessive portraits of violence in movies and dramas have instilled negative thoughts and taboos in the mind of these teenagers for they have been consistently getting increased exposure to things which are not suitable for their age.
