You’re 16 being sex trafficked and after being days of being drugged and raped by different men. You’re purchased by a 43 year old man who takes you to his home for sex. You end up having the guts to fight back and kill him knowing if you hadn’t he would’ve killed you. You’re then sentenced to life in prison. This is the story of Cyntoia Brown and my presentation is more about her, her story story and what happened. Cyntoia brown was only 16 years old, almost our own age when she got sentenced to prison back in 2004. Growing up, She had been given up for adoption by her biological mother when she was only two years old, Georgina Mitchell. When she got pregnant with Cyntoia she continued to consume alcohol which resulted to fetal alcohol …show more content…
Cyntoia brown is an advocate for change in the justice system and a living example of being robbed justice and freedom. We have to open our eyes, and look around us issues and cases like Cyntoia’s are happening everywhere. The world that we believe that is perceived as “perfect” is not exactly like we think it is.. Have you heard of these recent news in 2017? The slave trade in Libya is happening right now at this moment. Libya is the main transit point for refugees trying to reach Europe for freedom. In April there was reports of slave markets tormenting hundreds of young African men and pricing them for as low $200-$400 for slavery and torture and even as worst as death. How about climate change? Sea levels are at their fastest rate in 2,000 years Global flooding could triple by 2030 Two thirds of the Great Barrier Reef has been damaged as a result of climate change , and more greenhouse gasses are in our atmosphere than any time in human
We might disagree on the causes of global warming; however, we cannot ignore that it is happening. Although we still experience cold winters, average global temperatures has risen drastically for the past three decades. Polar ice caps are melting; as a result, sea levels are rising. Scientist predict more extreme weather in the coming decades, in fact, droughts will probably be more common. Also, flooding and tropical temperatures might cause large amounts of methane gases to be released, which could be disastrous for our atmosphere. Climate change may have human causes and also it might be a natural occurrence. Nevertheless, we must find ways to save our planet.
Global temperature has risen six-tenths of a degree in those 20 years. Population has increased by 1.7 billion people. Sea levels have risen 3 inches and extreme weather in the U.S. has increased by 30 percent. In Greenland and Antarctica, ice sheets have lost 4.9 trillion tons of ice. (“This Is How Climate Change Has Altered Life on Earth the Past Two Decades”)
Irrespective of its cause, the impacts of climate change include more frequent and severe weather, higher death rates, dirtier air, higher wildlife extinction rates, and higher sea levels (IPCC, 2014). Although each of these impact areas are significant and worthy of further discussion, it is the ramifications of sea level rise that brought me to discuss climate action today.
A warming ocean has already killed large chunks of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. On April 4, 2017, writer Eduardo Porter for The New York Times published an article called, “To Curb Global Warming, Science Fiction May Become Fact,” intended for the reader of the New York Times. The editorial talks about how if we don’t take action as soon as possible, climate change could indeed become a new thing. Scientist all over the world are discovering many areas throughout the planet that are increasing in temperature, and animals’ homes are being destroyed. The writer is able to create a better understanding on the dangers of a warming planet, by saying the earth is increasing in temperature all over the world, not only affecting different animals,
Glaciers are melting, sea levels are rising, forests are drying and wildlife is suffering, these are all results of the apparent rise in global temperatures and it has become more
Rising temperatures are causing melting glaciers, which cause rising oceans. Rising oceans will envelop entire coastal cities, killing or displacing millions of people. Our food sources will dwindle; entire species of animals will become extinct as we destroy their homes to rebuild; and as our population skyrockets, an unimaginable number of humans will be left homeless, starving, and sick.
According to scientific research, the average temperature of the earth has risen by between ten and twenty degrees Celsius (M.L. Weitzman, 2008). These high temperatures could well be described as a ‘recipe for disaster’, and could produce results that would be catastrophic on a global scale. What is more alarming however, is that there is already a lot of evidence of predicted results of climate change, for instance, in Australia especially, severe draughts have been common in farming areas in the last few decades, there has been an increase of intense and extreme weather events, for example floods, flash floods, tsunamis, earthquakes and tornados, almost all of the natural disasters listed have occurred for ‘unknown’ reasons in the past few years. Rises in sea water level and temperature due to higher acid levels caused by global warming, threaten the existence of species and in some areas, entire eco-systems resulting in the loss of natural biodiversity. ‘Climate change is pushing the world to the verge of environmental and economic collapse, whether global deniers want to believe it or not’ (N. Klein, 2011).
Leading scientists advise climate change will cause increases to the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. Rising sea levels pose a significant risk to coastal communities, while the world’s oceans could become too acidic to support coral reefs and other calcifying marine organisms.
The climate change, and gradual increase in the temperature are believed to be permanently changing Earth’s climate. This great debate has questioned many people questioning on whether Global Warming is real. There are many different views on whether Global Warming is actually real or not and the possible catastrophic damage it has caused thus far. While some people may claim ignorance on the subject, substantial data shows an accelerated increase in global climate change and rise in ocean temperatures. Climatologists believe that Australia is experiencing an "accelerated climate change", which places the vast Great Barrier Reef at a severe risk(Alexander). The diversity, frequency, and scale of human impacts on coral reefs are increasing to
Rising sea levels, polar bears falling through ice, huge monsoons evaporated by blistering sunlight , it sounds like a nightmare, but all of these things are happening on Earth. Earth's temperature is rising, the average temperature is expected to rise a little over 8 degrees fahrenheit over the next couple centuries. These changes in our climate can result in bigger problems than just warmer weather. Climate change happens to everyone and it will affect all living things on Earth, through the use of our resources, such as: agriculture, water, resources, ecosystems, and health.
In fact major floods that used to happen only once in 100 years now occurring every 10 or 20 years (WWF Global, N.D) And droughts are becoming a constant recurrence in countries such a Malawi, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe. Ice loss from the massive ice sheets covering Greenland and Antarctica is accelerating and could soon become the main contributor to rising ocean levels
The numbers demonstrates the extent of the situation; global temperatures are increasing (1.2 to 1.4 F in the last century only), heat waves are more common, the sea levels are rising and therefore coastal regions are at risk, glaciers are melting, serious damages are done to oceans such as the acidification process which is the direct effect from Carbone dioxide in the atmosphere reacting to salt water and destroying corals and life underwater, green house gas are more frequent …
We are slowly destroying our climate and environment. The land and ocean surfaces have warmed roughly 1.53 degrees Fahrenheit from 1880-2012 (How much has the global temperature risen since 1880? 1). Land warms faster than the oceans. In the northern hemisphere, 1983 to 2012 were the warmest 30 year period in the last 1,300 years (How much has the global temperature risen since 1880? 1). This is a cause for concern among scientist.
The average temperature is expected to rise over time. With the temperature slowly rising, icebergs are melting in Antarctica which is causing polar bears to have to move. Snow and ice cover has been decreasing a lot already. Sea levels are also rising, if sea levels are rising that can cause floods. More and more floods, droughts, and heat waves have been occurring more than one hundred years ago. With all of these natural disasters happening more often, the human race is having
Last but not least, global warming has caused the polar ice caps to melt. The melting of the polar ice caps will cause the sea levels to rise all over the world. If the sea levels rise just a metre
