As an example for sleep, the DEC2 gene can develop several mutations. One variation may result in reduced sleep while also reducing the recovery sleep needed, leaving a person with higher resistance to sleep loss. Another mutation can lower the gene’s ability to suppress the transactivation of genes such as CLOCK and NPAS2. Yet another variation has no observed effects on sleep or sleep deprivation.
1. List whether the student was positive or negative for each characteristic and include whether the characteristic is dominant or recessive. (6 points)
In my previous experiences and conversations with various individuals, the overall interpretation or misconception of bipolar disease is that the person is “”crazy. What do people really consider or mean by the term crazy? As displayed by Team B’s behavior presentation, Bipolar disorder
Some genes, including damage-inducing ones involved in stress reactions, were amplified.” “ 30% of civilian adults in the U.S. say they get six or fewer hours of sleep. That suggests that millions of people might be sustaining damage to their bodies.” (16). In order to get enough sleep, Brown demonstrates in the article that we can not drink beverages with caffeine. “But caffeine “gums up the signal” that tells the brain when it need more sleep, fooling people into thinking that they’re getting plenty of rest, Czeisler said.”(19). Some researchers did some test. For example, “Further analysis revealed that genes involved in inflammation, immunity and protein damage were activated, suggested that tissue harm was occurring after sleep deprivation. Many of the down-regulated genes, in contrast, were involved in producing new protein, cells and tissues. The balanced process of tissue renewal seemed to be disrupted by insufficient
Genetic Corp X is one of the world's premier tissue and organ cloning centers. Medical breakthroughs of all kinds have originated from the work done at the facility. Zarra Perez was their lead research scientist on her way to curing Alzheimer's disease--until a nearly fatal accident left her with no personal memories or sense of self. Her father and husband want her to return to the life they say she had before her accident. However, even with no sense of personal identity, Zarra isn't content to allow others to dictate her life while she waits on her memories to come back. In her desperate search to remember show she is, Zarra uncovers the horrible truth about Genetic Corp X. Now she is faced with a moral dilemma that could result in her own
In chapter 6, we are introduced to Barbara McClintock, a scientist who would change how we viewed genetics as a whole. Similar to other some other female scientist, she was largely ignored for her ideas but we came to realize the importance of her research. McClintock focuses a lot of her research on corn and its genetic material and evolutionary history. By studying corn she found that certain areas of the corn would have different colors. For example, while most of the corn would be yellow, there could be purple sections within the same corn. Upon further research, she proved the hypothesis that sections of corn DNA were actually
I love your critical thinking for variation in genetic code. This topic was an eye opener for us humans and our genetic code and how we all have a genetic code that your body follows and can’t break that code. I understand your thinking of how there is so many different variations and that’s because there are not few but a large amount of them. I see that there is some wording that is off but you still get the topic. What I like the most about this is the chromosome and how something so small makes a big impacted on you and your life but also I think that alleles are great too. The alleles are great because of the mutation concept where you can get something huge like and extra arms or something small like an extra eyelash. Schizophrenia
In today’s society, many people go through many days yawning, fighting to stay awake and indulging in many cups of coffee. If you were to ask them what the cause of their restlessness was, the popular statement would be a lack of sleep. However, most would not dare to think that a lack of sleep could cause multiple issues in everyday life. This problem has been seen to peak during the good ole college days. It is hard to imagine that those days of all-night cramming sessions and those late nights partying causing students to be sleep deprived could lead to a variety of problems like stress, long term insomnia, and a weakened immune system.
The society in Brave New World is different and abnormal because the society people know and live in today is quite far from the one described in the novel. Much of the book is dedicated to genetic engineering that is much more advanced than anything tried in today’s society.
Carol Everson first recorded the affects of lack of sleep in 1989 based on work with rats. Her findings showed that all the mice that were deprived of sleep died within a month. She also showed that sleep does not need to be deprived entirely to be deadly, the deprivation of deep sleep (rapid eye movement or REM) would also cause the rats to die. In Italy, a case had been recorded of a man dying within a few months of developing familial insomnia. In his case, an autopsy was performed on his brain after death and neuron deterioration in the thalamus was found. They did not determine if the deterioration had caused his insomnia or his death. However, the cause of the deterioration was found, and that cause was linked to prions which cause spongy deterioration in the brain. While prions causing mad cow disease are ingested from the environment, the prions found in the man’s brain had been inherited and passed down within
Between 750,000 and 1.5 million individuals in the United States have Parkinson's ailment. Most instances of the condition result from an unpredictable connection of ecological and hereditary components. Caucasian men are 1.5 times more probable than ladies to build up the condition, and its prevalence increments with age. Roughly 5 percent of individuals determined to have PD have a family history of the confusion. Such familial cases can be caused by transformations in five qualities that give critical data about atomic pathways associated with the infection. Changes of the LLRK2, or SNCA quality, in an autosomal predominant example. This implies one duplicate of an adjusted quality in every cell is adequate to cause the confusion. In these
Sleep is one of the unavoidable daily-living activities and it is one of the most important factors contributing to a person’s health. A quality sleep is essential for the physical, cognitive and psychological well-being of a person. Learning, memory processing and maintenance of the brain are among the most important functions of sleep. In addition to maintaining the brain, sleep has important roles in controlling the
Many disorders and diseases can result from abnormal sleeping patterns that are triggered from sleep deprivation. The most common forms of sleep disorders include insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and narcolepsy (NINDS 10). All of these sleep disorders begin from sleep deprivation and can be managed once they are diagnosed correctly. According to Urban, “Nervousness, dizziness, and sleeplessness may occur”, as a result of sleep deprivation (1). This proves that the slightest health changes can occur if sleep deprivation becomes a problem. According to NINDS, “The disorders and the resulting sleep deprivation interfere with work, driving, and social activities” (10). This shows that the effects of being sleep deprived can drastically change one’s everyday
Great post Anthony! I liked your take on the strengths and weaknesses of DTC genetic testing. I also agree with you in terms of having an infrastructure in various health systems to handle genetic counseling to patients and consumers. Genetic counseling should be about patient self-efficacy and empowerment. This debate between government regulation and medical advancement is not new. Every approved drug on the market today is a product of this balance between the government and industry. But there is something about DNA and genetic information that many of us are still trying to understand in terms of its social, ethical, and personal impact. While there are laws aimed at protecting genetic information, like GINA, there is a gray area that
Sleep is an essential part of any person’s health, however few people seem to realize that not receiving enough sleep can double the risk of becoming obese.“The ‘epidemic’ of obesity is paralleled by a ‘silent epidemic’ of reduced sleep duration with short sleep duration linked to the increased risk of obesity both in adults and in children”(Professor Cappuio). Someone who has developed a sleeping disorder such as, sleep apnea, may not have the motivation to diet or exercise, due to daytime sleepiness. Scientists at the University of Chicago conucted a study in 1999, which restricted eleven healthy young adults to four hours of sleep for six nights. The scientist discovered that restricting individuals to this amount of sleep impaired metabolism functions and disrupted hormone levels. It was also found that the subject’s abilities to process glucose in the blood had declined, in some cases to the level of diabities. ” Not only does obesity contribute to sleep problems such as sleep apnea, but sleep problems can also contribute to obesity.”(National Sleep Foundation)
the link between sleeping disorders and later life onset of PD could be gained from
