Darfur Rebellion Crisis

The Sudan Liberation Movement and the Justice Equality Movement took arms against the Sudanese government, which was later named “The War in Darfur”. Which sparked the anger of the government and sent their military to begin murdering many villages, that were non Arabs. In many accounts reported about 2 million were killed over 2 decades.Scarce resources played a huge role in the mass killings of Sudanese (non arab).

Did you know one out of twelve people died as a result of the Darfur genocide? The Darfur genocide was part of the ongoing Sudanese civil war in Darfur. The rebel sides are the Sudan Liberation Movement and the Justice Equality Movement. The Janjaweed, or Sudan’s government-funded military, retaliated against the rebellion by attacking and killing the civilians in Darfur. These practices went on long enough that it was considered a genocide. The Darfur crisis was one of the most tragic events in the last twenty years, and affected families in many ways including the brutal treatment of natives, moving to refugee camps, and the loss of home villages and possessions.

In recent times, the media has highlighted the genocide that has been occurring in Darfur, Sudan. Darfur, Sudan is a country roughly the size of the state of Texas (Darfur Scores, n.d.). Genocide is the systematic killing of an entire ethnic group of people from a national, ethnic, or religious group, or an attempt to do away with them all (Darfur Scores, n.d.). Beginning around 2003, according to Darfur Scores (n.d.), “the Sudanese government in Khartoum and the government-sponsored Janjaweed militia have used rape, displacement, organized starvation, threats against aid workers and mass murder. Violence, disease, and displacement continue to kill thousands of innocent Darfurians every month.”

The ongoing genocide in Darfur is in desperate need of help. As the first genocide of the 20th century it impacts us directly. The men, women and children of Darfur are being exposed to death, rape and even water contamination.The Janjaweed is the root of the destruction in Darfur has motivated economic power, political power and a plain simple rivalry over the non- Muslim and the non-Arab. The Janjaweed translates to devils on horseback they got there name for a reason they ride around horseback armed with assault rifles and intentions of destruction.

As of March of 2008, a total of 300,000 people have died in Darfur, Sudan due to genocide. That is equivalent to the entire population of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Genocide started back in February of 2003 in Darfur, Sudan. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights defines the liberties set for everyone in the World. Established in 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights displays the rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled to.  The situation in Darfur, Sudan is known as Genocide, Genocide is defined as a systematic extermination or attempt at exterminating a national, political, racial or cultural group. The Darfur Genocide refers to the endless deaths, rape cases, and abductions that the civilians of a village called “Darfur” have endured for the past 12 years. All of these horrendous cases have been on contempt of a ruthless militia called Janjaweed. This Arab group of soldiers is committing these treacherous crimes based off of the ludicrous ideology that the Arab race is unsurpassable, and supreme to the Darfurian race. The name, “Janjaweed” translates directly to the name “Horseman”, and justly so. This armed group literally invades Darfurian farmland on horseback. Darfur is one of the nine states of The Republic of Sudan in the southern region of Sudan. Khartoum became the capital of Sudan and “wealthy Northern Arabs from around the Nile River received control of the government. Darfur and Southern Sudan were excluded from any real power” (Levy 16). Khartoum used starvation as a weapon of war, they prevented workers from delivering food to those who needed it in the south even though Khartoum clearly knew this was a violation of international law. Due to the lack of food over 500,000 people starved to death in the years of 1992 and 1993 (20). The United States and other countries of the international community pressured Sudan to begin discussing peace talks in 2001 and in the next few years. However, even though the peace talks were signed both parties failed to hold up their end of the compromise. This continued to happen in the next few years, each time the peace talks failed (20 and 29-31). Along with the starvation, drought water shortages, crop destruction by locusts, famine, and disease were recurring problems in Darfur (18).

In 2003 there was a mass slaughter and and rape of the people in Darfur. This happened to so many people like men, women, and children. Many people suffered from the mass torturing. This is known as a genocide. The genocide has been going on for about 13 years and is still going on today. This genocide is the first genocide in the 21st century. The darfur genocide was gruesome. Since the Darfur bloodshed was gruesome and had people attacking, it led the United States and Court to believe it was considered a genocide. Darfur is a horrible time in history for so many people. The War in the Darfur region of Sudan has occurred since February of 2003. The Sudanese Liberation Movement (SLM) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) are rebel groups that revolted against the Sudanese government, producing a civil war throughout Darfur. The direct result of which is the first genocide of the 21st century, and more specifically, genocide through governmental disregard.

This is happening because of the oppression of Darfur’s non-Arab population.. The people started to revolt and wanted the government to stop the oppressing of the non–Arab population. The government did not listen and got violent with the people. The Darfur Conflict took place in Sudan, Africa. Darfur is 170,000 miles; they have many volcanic high lands. They can get heavy rain fall. “(1)”The Marrah Mountains are one of their famous mountains in Darfur.”(1)” It was started by the government hitting a military base in 2003.”(3)” Before the military base hit the government was having some environmental issues. They didn’t have enough natural resources for their people. The government had a lot of food and water shortages. The Darfur conflict was then put in the arms of the Janjaweed. These people were Arabs. They thought that they had to cleanse the community of any non-Arabs people. The government agreed and the people fought back. This was the start of the civil war in Darfur.

To begin with, the government of Darfur has drastically changed the country into a dystopian society with its actions, and Darfur’s government was not stopped. Darfur is in the middle of a lot of chaos, and the government is only adding to that by sending out the Janjaweed, a government led group who attacks, murders the Darfurians, and destroys their belongings. The government also bombs villages, kills or enslaves survivors of their attacks, taking or destroying food supplies, and polluting the water supply with the dead bodies.
