Many people who professed their faith to the Catholic Church started to second guess themselves on believing in the Catholic religion. Their main problem with the Church was that the Church sold lies in the form of an indulgence to their loyal worshippers. Few were able to write about their hatred for indulgences because the writing in the time period was censored by the Church itself. The people needed something so that they could speak out about the Church’s wrongdoings and Johannes Gutenberg had a neat idea to solve their problem. Gutenberg made it possible to print articles and books without the Church’s approval with his printing press (Waugh). This created the perfect opportunity for a man named Martin Luther. This man, had this great idea, and now he had a way to show it to other people. He printed his ideologies non-stop with the new Printing press (Kramer). People found out about what the Catholic Church was doing to them because of Martin Luther’s idea. The people rallied behind Martin Luther. He and his people formed their own Church which started the split of the Church and beginning of the Reformation.This all comes

The beginning of church is said to have risen from the resurrection of Jesus. In fact after the Pentecost, the disciples were celebrating the blessing given to Moses at Mount Sinai in which he experienced the presence of God. After this experience, the disciples were believed to be bold, understanding and Courageous. These characteristics till this day are still celebrated on Pentecost Sunday and are used for the sacrament of Confirmation, which is receiving the responsibility of a Christian and accepting the Holy Spirit. Church has been the backbone of people's faith. It has given them a comforting home to pray and be one with God. Today, however, more people are practicing faith outside the church. The majority of followers believe in God and life after death, however, many have lack of interest in the church. Church must be looked as a community of disciples. The book uses a suggestion from a Roman Catholic theologian Avery Dulles. He suggests, "that most appropriate image of the church for our times is the church as a community of disciples"(pp. 157). I totally agree with his suggestion. In order for Christians to find fulfillment in ones faith, one must help others understand their faith. Herbert Spencer was the most important Social Darwinist of the 19th Century. He was the first to begin thinking about evolutionist long before Darwin came out with his book on the "Origins of Species". Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield played big role in the increase in religious toleration. They both had the same beliefs and motivated to write sermons to the people about good works and predestination. Both men believed that if you do not good works you are being called upon to receive the wrath of God and will be sent down to hell.

The Great Awaking convinced many that God wanted to spread his word of the gospel by awakening them righteously and spiritualty which would convince people that the world would have peace on earth, but at the same time another cultural movement that imported from Europe which was called romanticism inspired many to strive for self-perfection.

The church began to lose to power because the people were no longer listening to the church, and because of what they learned from the 95 statement thesis written by Martin Luther. The thesis informed people they did not need to pay their way to heaven, pay for someone to get out of Purgatory,or pay to get to heaven (Doc.8). The writing of Luther’s 95 thesis led to the printing press being invented by Gutenberg, with creation of the printing press it allowed the people to read the bible for themselves, which in turn allowed them to think for themselves (Doc.9). With this new knowledge from the bible, people began revolting against the church and the government. This led to wars such as the St. Bartholomew Massacre. The St. Bartholomew Massacre started because Catherine de’ Medici felt threatened by the influence of Huguenot Admiral de Coligny and planned on assassinating him. They were not successful and only wounded Coligny. This caused the Huguenots to become furious which made the Medici nervous, who in turn ordered a massacre of all Huguenots. This led to a religion division. With the chaotic acts of freedom from the people, Europe created the Nation States. The Nation States were made to keep people from acting out against the government and to keep control over the

The effects on society were that common people were getting more educated on their own, and didn’t need the Church for guidance to run their lives. It also encouraged more people to learn how to write because there was a wider market for their words and opinions. Religion became more accessible to the common people. This allowed for people to come up with their own opinions on the translation of the Bible. The people began to challenge the Church’s authority because they no longer needed a Priest to translate to them. This would end up causing the Catholic Church to lose power.
