In studying the ratings of The Ellen DeGeneres Show and comparing those ratings to The Oprah Winfrey Show, numerous questions should be addressed. The necessary questions required depend primarily on the objective of the report. Additionally, many secondary questions can be considered and utilized in making sound decisions regarding the implementation and franchising of the show. Cooper and Schindler (2014) provide examples of important questions to ask when conducting a study. These are mostly related to the collection of data, who collected the data, what were their credentials, when was the data collected, how large was the sample, from where was the sample taken, and so on. In what ways was the DeGeneres’ show “on par” with Winfrey’s show? What questions were used to determine this, and what exactly were the results?
2. What research was involved in determining the “traits that appeal to day-time’s female audience?”
3. In what ways is DeGeneres “more likable than Winfrey?”
4. In what ways, or in what areas, did the DeGeneres show lag behind Winfrey’s?
Addressing these questions will enable decision makers to adequately assess the information being presented and make the necessary decisions in implementing the changes or new processes necessary. After addressing these questions, the network can then begin to use the reported data to sell the television show to regional and local networks and stations. The network would be wise to develop a written and visual report to send out to potential buyers that includes the available data, including comparisons to Winfrey’s show, and includes the answers to the questions developed previously. Presenting all of the data as a comparison, and highlighting the areas in which DeGeneres’ show meets or exceeds Winfrey’s, can be used as a selling point—selling to a network that does not carry DeGeneres’ show may be easier if compared to Winfrey’s show since most executives would be familiar with the success of
