Chapter 7: Why being stressed or depressed isn’t the same as having a mental health issue
“Mental health stigma quote: “You cannot recover from anxiety by just staying calm. You cannot recover from depression by just being positive. You cannot recover from anorexia nervosa by just eating more. If mental illnesses were that simple we wouldn’t be struggling in the fist place.”
Having been diagnosed with ADHD, I’ve heard people say “I can’t focus all the time so I must have ADHD, maybe I should go get a Ritalin prescription” or I know what Anxiety feels like I get stressed, but I don’t need medication for it. Or “I’m having an ADD moment”
First of all ADHD just like many other many other mental health issues, are a lot more complicated than that! Mental Health issues involve medical, therapeutic, social, behavioural and pharmaceutical interventions and aren’t just about feeling tired, sad, stressed and so on
I think the best way to describe how a mental health issue feels is from describing it through the perspective of those who have been diagnosed with a VALID MEDICAL CONDITION through their eyes!!!!
Anxiety: Anxiety is a thin stream of fear trickling through the mind. If encouraged, it cuts a channel into which all other thoughts are drained. Arthur Somers Roche
Clinical Depression: “The so-called ‘psychotically depressed’ person who tries to kill herself doesn’t do so out of quote ‘hopelessness’ or any abstract conviction that life’s assets and debits do not square.
ADHD is frequently prescribed to children. Many people do not even know what ADHD really is, or if this disorder even exists. People who have this disorder are not able to, or have a hard time: focusing, being over reactive, or not being able to control their behaviors, or a combination of these traits. Richard Saul, who is a neurologist states, “ADHD is a collection of symptoms, not a disease” (Smith). These symptoms may just be acts of acknowledgment from children to their parents. Many doctors give children the misunderstanding statement of have a disorder, but really it is just their personality or their parenting. Numerous amounts of children and some adults are being diagnosed with ADHD, so they think.
Did you know that Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity disorder is a very common mental illness, there is up to 3 million cases of adhd a year in the united states alone. ADHD is a serious mental illness and can cause many problems to your health. Such as compulsive eating, low self-esteem, substance abuse, anxiety, and chronic stress. ADHD can also affect your surroundings as well, you may lose attention in important lectures or mess up on a quiz, and it can make you misunderstand a situation socially and that can cause problems within relationships. ADHD seems to affect not only your mental health but your physical health and your relationships around you as well. After finding this information, I believe that ADHD is underdiagnosed in
ADHD is one of the most studied psychiatric disorders. Even with all the attention given to ADHD, the exact cause of this disorder is still unknown. Because diving into what mental health professionals are studying as the cause
Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), is the most common psychiatric disorder among children today. It’s symptoms are not necessarily obvious and start at various times. Some children give indication of having the disorder before they are born, others are not diagnosed with having it until their preteen years. ADHD overlaps with several other conditions, further confusing physicians and mental health professionals who attempt to provide a diagnosis.
According to the Mayo Clinic, a mental illness can be defined as a disorder, or multiple disorders that can all be on a spectrum, that can affect mood, cognitive abilities, and the way one acts. Mayo Clinic’s definition also includes the specification that, to be considered a mental illness, the symptoms generally effect a person’s ability to function in common life situations, all while causing quite a bit of stress. It becomes obvious that these types of diseases can be just as damaging as physical illnesses, hence the drastic need for treatment and continuing advancements in the methods of treatment.
People with ADHD are commonly diagnosed with the disorder by a doctor and subsequently supplied with the treatment options of Ritalin or Adderall. But, the reality is, sometimes people can get a
Life is full of challenges for the average person, and adding ADHD to that list just makes things even harder. ADHD affects people in every aspect of life. This disorder affects children’s school, family, and social life.
ADHD is a psychological disorder- it causes absent-mindedness, impulsiveness, restlessness and unruly behaviour. It provokes a lack of focus and concentration in various fields of the patient’s life; for instance, it can lead to deterioration in academic performance.
I did not understand why ADHD was such a bad deal for people. Most of the time it is not as bad for the person with it as it is for the doctor. It can be worse for the doctor because sometimes they don't know what is wrong so they may or may not be able to treat you. They would probably have to send you to a specialist. The only reason they can't treat you is because if they don't know what is wrong with you they and they give you a medication of some kind it can make whatever you have worse.
To discuss the social issue of mental health is to take into account a wide range of related issues and concerns, because describing the problem brings other subjects up that should also be presented. Starting with mental illness, it is defined as a wide range of mental health conditions or disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior. Serious mental illnesses include major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and borderline personality disorder. In the United States one in four people have anxiety disorders while 20 percent have a serious mental illness (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Statistics [SAMHSA], 1998, p. 116).
When people think of mental illness, they often think of people in psychiatric institutions or famous serial killers. However, mental health disorders are not always that theatrical. A mental illness is a condition that has a massive impact on a person's thoughts, feelings, and their moods. Statistics show that one in four adults and one in five children will be affected by a mental illness (World Health Organization, 2001). Depending on the severity of their condition, it may affect his or her ability to relate to others and function correctly on a daily basis. Many people believe that a variety of mental disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and ADHD are not real or are just something you can get over. They have no idea how wrong they are.
Mind (2013) maintains that mental health problems are likely to affect the way individuals think, feel and behave. Similarly Townsend (2014) suggests that mental illness is the diagnosed clinically recognised behavioural patterns or symptoms. Therefore it
“If mental illness could be seen on a sufferer maybe society wouldn’t say ‘just get over it’ .” Mental illness unlike other diseases or disorders are, for the most part invisible. They are not easily recognised. These instances of being told to “just get over it” or “just calm down” or “It’s all in your head” are direct evidence of the stigma of having mental illness present in some cultures. A mental illness is in fact in your head, but your head is connected to body, they are one in the same, these disorders of the mind are just as critical as those of the body.
At the beginning of the semester, I had thought of mental health as a simple term that defined a person’s well-being. However, after taking this course, I have been exposed to different perspectives on the term mental health by watching videos, hearing my classmates own lived experiences, and learning about the DSM-5. The first new perspective that I have gained from this class is the logistics of someone’s mental health, in which a person’s mental health would be diagnosed. Through the DSM-5, we as professionals can better understand a person’s state of mental health as we review the criteria for certain disorders. It also allows us to educate ourselves on the different disorders that may not be familiar. In
Depression. Depressed. Depressing. These are all used in our daily lives. We state that someone who is down ‘depressed’ because they failed a test is. Someone who has recently had an argument is ‘depressed’ about it. If someone isn’t completely happy, they must be ‘depressed’. NO! That is not depression. That is not what having and suffering from depression ever is.
