“Thwack.” My 8-foot tall tower of LEGOs came crashing down. It had been a tiring endeavor for my 9-year old self, as I precariously climbed over furniture to put the pieces together. Now it now lay strewn in a big mass of rubble. Rather than explode in anger and frustration, it was a moment for me to reflect. How could I improve my structure for the next build so it would not fall over again? Another day, I heard my mom’s distinct yell: “Who messed with the clock?” I smirked and shrunk into a corner. While pens were easy to reconstruct, clocks took a lot longer. These are my earliest memories of my penchant for building, disassembling and attempting to put things back together again. Growing up as an only child, my constant companions were LEGOs, Marble Works, and Tinker Toys. Though adults would ply me with dolls, I rarely gravitated towards them. Noting my interest in making (and often breaking) things, I formed a First Lego League (FLL) team with a few of my friends. Soon I was messing around with NXT software and building robot prototypes. I was pleasantly surprised to find many of my hare-brained ideas becoming features of our robot. I was nominated as my team’s research lead for the project component.
