Edwidge Danticat’s memoir has proven her ability to use descriptions that allows the text and the readers to connect. Through her writing, she is able to get the reader involved in her situation, so that it is as if they are experiencing it too. Reflecting on my life as a means of deciding on a topic, one time period struck me as particularly important in terms of writing itself: my second year of second grade. Writing is a practice that most of us were taught when we were young. We were taught the basics of grammar, how to form a sentence, conjunction words, how to write paragraphs and more. Although we have learned this skill while growing up and have used the skill every year after entering kindergarten, this does not mean our writing process will ensure the best work. The authors that I chose each encourage their audience to excel in the art of writing in their own way to help with the writing process.

When I first read the assignment, It took me a while to think of someone that I consider being a great writer. Then it hit me, Chief of police Steve Woodall, is a great writer and would be honored for me to interview him. When I set down with Chief Woodall I gave him a brief outline of what the assignment was about. I first ask the Chief to tell me what type of writing he does. He stated that he does several different types of writing. However, he said the main type of writing he does on a daily basis is descriptive writing. The Chief stated that descriptive writing allowed the reader to understand what he is trying to get them to see because it recreate a place or action that the reader can picture in his or her mind.

As spring semester began, the anxiety pushed into my life. Since I knew I was going to be the youngest in the class, I was concerned if people were even going to talk to me. I expected to come into the stressful English 101 class as a relatively inexperienced writer; however, I was astounded when I started writing my first college essay. Our topic “monsters” has taught me ways to analyze and compare certain people and objects. My recommendation for those entering this composition class is to not wait until the last minute and ask as many questions as you can to reach your goal towards fantastic essays. Although spring semester is coming to an end, I will continue to improve my writing skills and reasoning as I advance in my English and college career.

From the early beginning of the school year to the current day, my writing skills and knowledge have improved and broadened over time. If not drastic, the change is noticeable nevertheless. For almost an entirety of eighth grade, assignments of varying difficulty challenged me to a degree. To be frank, some seemed as though they were beyond my comprehension and ability. However, determination amalgamated with knowledge obtained in advance helped me to overcome my doubts, for I exceeded my expectations; surprisingly good grades and comments are a delight, owing to the fact of that I don’t tend to think of myself as being proficient at writing. Consequently, the assignments given to me this school year shaped me into who I am as a writer.

Each style has a distinctive purpose: some tell a story, some describes and others may persuade a viewpoint. I learned that descriptive essays have text which generally describes something in great detail. Whatever is being defined requires a broad research of trustworthy sources. The thing I liked most was researching and finding out new information on my topic. However, my greatest trouble was involving the reader’s emotion into my essays or writings. Nonetheless I realize that by involving the reader's emotions my writing gives a more vivid detail that makes the reader feel like he or she is actually there.

Flateby (p 190) argues that critical and creative writers must use descriptive words. I am now able to utilize descriptive words in my writings that are capable of creating a scenic imagination to the reader. I am also able to write a reported speech. These are writing skills that I gained after writing the paper on Obama’s acceptance speech. I believe that these are very critical skills that will help me throughout my entire course and even after my studies.
