Ever since I was young, I have had a passion for reading and writing. It is just something that has always come easily to me. So when eleven-year-old me walked through the dimly lit hallways of Johnsonville Elementary School, into a strange classroom, and sat in my boxed-in-desk and was told that I was writing a descriptive essay, I was extremely excited. It would be the first time that I had ever written a descriptive-based paper. Nevertheless, it was a newly-introduced challenge, and I was ready to take it on. “Okay class”, said the plump teacher standing in the front of the room, “I have been informed that each of you needs to write an essay for the state.” “I hope it is about monsters and astronauts!”, the student beside me said. …show more content…
“I then sat down in my seat and felt the cotton-lined cushions. They were the softest things that I had ever felt and I truly would never forget them”, I added. I then continued, “However, my experience was interrupted by a loud tra-”. Again, I didn’t like that. “There must be a better word than loud.”, I thought, “What is it though?”
I went through every possible word before I finally found the word that I liked. “However, my experience was interrupted by a screaming whistle. The train was getting ready to move and I needed to prepare myself for it” “That sounds a lot better!”, I said to myself. I kept writing. “I then felt the train shift forwards and we started going. I looked out of the window and saw the fluffy, Grey clouds of smoke rise above us.” “Just like she told us.” I wrote and smiled. “Not long after, I heard three bold knocks on the door of the train car that I was in.”, I wrote, “It was a man wearing a nicely tailored suit asking if I wanted some sweets. Of course, I couldn’t resist and took them up in a heartbeat.” I paused for a few moments, and continued “He ended up giving me some chocolate cupcakes with the most delicious frosting that I have ever had.” I started to lick my lips from just thinking about it. “When I finished the last one, I looked out the window and saw the train station. Just as quick as I had gotten on, the train arrived at its destination.”, I concluded my paper and read it over a thousand times. When I
These essays show me how much I lack when it comes to descriptive writing. I often use simple vague words to get my point across quicker rather than taking the time to write about the details about the situation or the people or whatever I may be writing about.
Learning about the different type of writing styles and steps of writing was the most interesting. Descriptive essays are my favorite to read and write. If I was to write about a person, I would select a dominant impression of the person using details to convey that impression. I would also choose details to support the topic sentence. Descriptive essays help give readers vivid image in their mind. When I write descriptive essays, I use 4 steps ; I select a subject, Select details that support my
The “Monkey Garden” descriptive writing was one of the most beneficial daily assignments that we have done all year. We received a paper to fill in different categories including images, sounds, emotions etc. After analyzing the writing of Sandra Cisneros we received the chance to do a free write about our favorite place. I thought this process was beneficial because of how we listened to her writings and had to pick out the details when we heard them. When Mrs. Rowe gave us the chance to write our own story, it helped to solidify the recognition of rhetoric within an author’s piece. It helped me use the word choice in the text to figure out the tone of the author, it is similar to reading between the lines. I got the chance to capture a
A good story is always structured with details that are easy to follow while intriguing readers with reality and emotions. Edwidge Danticat’s memoir has proven her ability to use descriptions that allows the text and the readers to connect. Through her writing, she is able to get the reader involved in her situation, so that it is as if they are experiencing it too. Adding on, Danticat cleverly writes each type of description in a way that makes them distinct from each other. This connects the two which adds to her message. Descriptions bring life to her story and stresses the real events that happened to her and her family which displays her message effectively. That being said, without objective and subjective descriptions, any piece
Reflecting on my life as a means of deciding on a topic, one time period struck me as particularly important in terms of writing itself: my second year of second grade. Moving to Poway in 2007, the first class I was in was Mrs. Ramin’s 2-3 combo at Painted Rock. I had purple wire-rim glasses, a brown Hello Kitty tracksuit, two friends, and a hatred of writing. This was particularly unfortunate for young Analise, since Mrs. Ramin’s main focus was writing. She encouraged her students to write daily, setting aside 20-60 minutes each day for it. Although I hated it at first, my passion for creative writing grew as I turned my love for my sister and for Webkinz into tales of adventure and peril parallel to my then favorite series, Magic Tree House. I wrote, drew, and colored whatever my seven-year-old imagination spun for me. After that spark, the fire of writing died down to a smolder until eighth grade, when I wrote my first successful essay, “Flowers for Algernon: A Comparative Essay On How Two Versions of the Story are like
With seconds to spare, they bought a pair of train tickets and boarded the train that was just about to depart.
Writing is a practice that most of us were taught when we were young. We were taught the basics of grammar, how to form a sentence, conjunction words, how to write paragraphs and more. Although we have learned this skill while growing up and have used the skill every year after entering kindergarten, this does not mean our writing process will ensure the best work. The authors that I chose each encourage their audience to excel in the art of writing in their own way to help with the writing process.
When I first read the assignment, It took me a while to think of someone that I consider being a great writer. Then it hit me, Chief of police Steve Woodall, is a great writer and would be honored for me to interview him. When I set down with Chief Woodall I gave him a brief outline of what the assignment was about. I first ask the Chief to tell me what type of writing he does. He stated that he does several different types of writing. However, he said the main type of writing he does on a daily basis is descriptive writing. The Chief stated that descriptive writing allowed the reader to understand what he is trying to get them to see because it recreate a place or action that the reader can picture in his or her mind.
As spring semester began, the anxiety pushed into my life. Since I knew I was going to be the youngest in the class, I was concerned if people were even going to talk to me. I expected to come into the stressful English 101 class as a relatively inexperienced writer; however, I was astounded when I started writing my first college essay. Our topic “monsters” has taught me ways to analyze and compare certain people and objects. My recommendation for those entering this composition class is to not wait until the last minute and ask as many questions as you can to reach your goal towards fantastic essays. Although spring semester is coming to an end, I will continue to improve my writing skills and reasoning as I advance in my English and college career.
From the early beginning of the school year to the current day, my writing skills and knowledge have improved and broadened over time. If not drastic, the change is noticeable nevertheless. For almost an entirety of eighth grade, assignments of varying difficulty challenged me to a degree. To be frank, some seemed as though they were beyond my comprehension and ability. However, determination amalgamated with knowledge obtained in advance helped me to overcome my doubts, for I exceeded my expectations; surprisingly good grades and comments are a delight, owing to the fact of that I don’t tend to think of myself as being proficient at writing. Consequently, the assignments given to me this school year shaped me into who I am as a writer.
Each style has a distinctive purpose: some tell a story, some describes and others may persuade a viewpoint. I learned that descriptive essays have text which generally describes something in great detail. Whatever is being defined requires a broad research of trustworthy sources. The thing I liked most was researching and finding out new information on my topic. However, my greatest trouble was involving the reader’s emotion into my essays or writings. Nonetheless I realize that by involving the reader's emotions my writing gives a more vivid detail that makes the reader feel like he or she is actually there.
My knees shivered as I walked up the huge steps onto the bus. Millions of things were running through my mind; I was nervous. There was a loud chatter throughout the bus, but it wasn’t normal chatter. Everyone was on a light edge as we were all more than aware about what we were about to face. The bus pulled up into a familiar area. Elsternwick was busy and the sun was bright. I personally am always in Elsternwick and I never knew the museum was
The trip to the hotel room was about an eight-mile journey, which took almost two hours to complete. As I sat on an unfamiliar bus in a strange new city I began to
As the train hit the brake run, the brakes tighten with impressive force and speed, bringing the train to a smooth stop. The combination of grace and power and its disorienting array of twists and turns is impressive.
Flateby (p 190) argues that critical and creative writers must use descriptive words. I am now able to utilize descriptive words in my writings that are capable of creating a scenic imagination to the reader. I am also able to write a reported speech. These are writing skills that I gained after writing the paper on Obama’s acceptance speech. I believe that these are very critical skills that will help me throughout my entire course and even after my studies.
