The Difference between Operant and Classical Conditioning
Operant and classical conditioning plays a big role in education. The difference between these conditions is that operant conditioning when a teacher uses behavioral techniques to reinforce learning. It involves rewards and punishments. When a behavior is rewarded it cases that behavior to increase; on the other hand, if the behavior is punished then it causes the behavior to decrease. In contrast, classical conditioning does not take in account behavior, but classical conditioning occurs when a situation brings out a response without any previous learning. For example, timed exams, anxiety and high pressure can cause a student to not perform as well as they could have. Teachers can solve this by creating a learning or test environment, where students are comfortable, and feel calm and focus. Mr. Mike has many rules for his class; one of them is that students are not allowed to use their phone in class. He makes sure that every student understands that he does not want to see their phone at all even if they are not using it. The consequences for violating this rule is that he would confiscate the phone for the whole class period, and if it happens a second time he will keep the phone for the whole day. And the third time their parents will have to come get the phone. Most students understand clearly the rules of his class. There are two learning processes that are used, classical condition and operant conditioning. One learning process used is classical conditioning. Classical conditioning is a learning process in which a neutral stimulus becomes associated with a meaningful stimulus and acquires the capacity to elicit a similar response. I found two TV commercials that are excellent examples for classical conditioning. The first commercial I found is an Old Spice commercial. The ad starts off with an attractive man in a bathroom telling women to compare the men in their lives to him, stating that if men would stop using girl body wash they could be like him. The ad then moves to a boat where the man in the commercial offers the women in the audience two tickets to something they would enjoy and diamonds and then states that anything is possible if men used Old Spice as a body wash to smell like a man, not a lady. The second commercial I chose is a Nike advertisement. Throughout the advertisement there are young, attractive, fit, and famous people working hard to succeed.
An example of classical conditioning can be experience during first two week of a newborn. For example, if a woman breastfeed, she holds her baby near her breast. As a result, in few weeks, when mother takes a child just to hold him/her, a child reflectively begins to make sucking movements. Another approach is operant conditioning. It concentrates on the reward or punishment of the behavior. So, for example, parents use this approach with school grades. If a child gets good marks, parents may buy him/her some toy or go to the cinema. If a child gets bad grade, parents would probably forbear from this present. Moreover, they may use a punishment, such as staying at home during the weekend or doing homework all evening. Parent can also use social learning. This theory is based on the idea that every person has his/her idol. So, parents can become an example for their children. The example used in this paper goes back to when I was around seven or eight years old, and I ate some spoiled broccoli and cheese soup. I ended up getting food poisoning from the bad bacteria in the soup, and I was sick for two days. Ever since then, broccoli and cheese soup has made me feel nauseous.
Operant conditioning is the effects punishment and reinforcement have on behavior; “the law of effect, which states that behaviors associated with good consequences (satisfiers) are more likely to occur again in the future, whereas behaviors associated with bad consequences (annoyers) are less likely to occur again” (Durwin 162). This is a necessary component used by many psychologists and educators to provide the best positive outcome in a child’s behavior. Operant conditioning is a way of learning by rewarding positive behavior and punishing negative. If anyone on the team was late for practice, Coach Carter made them run. That was a punishment so that they would learn to be on time. Classical conditioning is an involuntary way of learning from preceding events. When the team started playing for Carter, the sound of a whistle, known as a conditioned stimulus, meant nothing to them. After a while, Carter trained them to respond to the sound of his whistle instantly by doing whatever he was asking of them, this is known as the conditioned response. This is an excellent example of how classical conditioning works to help us learn.

Classical conditioning is a form of learning that is taught to us through experiences we encounter in our lives. It involves outside stimuli to trigger the condition we have learned to expect. For example, the sound of a lunch bell would trigger our stomach to start growling soon after hearing the bell ring. The expectation of food to come soon after hearing the bell and satisfy our hunger is what makes our stomach growl. This is something learned over time. Expectations can be both good and bad. Sometimes these negative experiences cause us to have certain behaviors when we are reminded of such an event.
