There are many aspects of becoming a good leader. I realized, through this assignment, how important it is to identify various teaching styles and techniques used to enhance learning. Some teachers I observed used the traditional method of teacher teach and students pay attention to the lesson. In other settings, there was a variety of activities incorporated into the lesson, making learning fun. It was evident in all of the classes the positive teacher-student relationship as well as established rituals, and routine boundaries. Without hesitation, each one of the teachers was open and helpful in assisting this future leader 's journey. I observed six different classroom settings; one ID class, two civics classes (one collaborate and one honor), one collaborative pre-algebra class, one self-contained special education civics and one self-contained 8th grade English class. One of my favorite observation was in the ID class; I found myself amused during their morning ritual. There were thirteen students, with a multitude of disabilities, two teachers who taught all grade levels; one teacher for English and science and one teacher for history and math, as well as three behavioral aids. After attendance, the students went across the hall to the other classroom to begin their day; one student was unable to participate because of sound sensory issues. The teacher stood in front of the class and guided the students with loud voices they recited today 's date in words
Being a leader can be challenging, especially if you do not know how to adjust your leadership techniques based on the situation. Things that might be perfect in one case, can be absolutely disastrous in another. The ability to listen, watch and adjust according to the situation are some of the qualities that define a good leader. I really enjoyed watching the video, where Tom Peters was talking about the importance of listening. I agree, that as a manager you should be open to conversations with subordinates and peers, and should be open-minded in that matter. As it was mentioned in the video and throughout the discussion board interactions, a lot of people are unable to listen to others, and usually intervene within the first 20 seconds. The ability to listen is something that can be developed. Some leaders have the idea in their head, and are unable to change their mind. It does not matter how many people they talk to, they just cannot accept a different view, or look at the situation from a different angle. They can hear, but do not actually listen.
In reflecting on the principles and insightful content learned in this course, my ideas on leadership have increased my awareness for active collaboration among my peers. I value the insight as well as new perspectives that various group members can provide throughout the academic year. As a classroom teacher, I realize the importance of an effective teacher leader. While I am not currently pursuing a degree in school leadership via administration, I value the many ideas mentioned throughout this course. My students deserve a good role model and an excellent teacher that will inspire and push them to reach their full potential. While increasing the capacity to grow through positive relationships, my goal is to become a servant leader by investing
In order to be an effective leader there are traits involved as well as a competency to lead. Failure to take into account the personality traits a successful leader should possess can lead to employing a leader who is ineffective. Many times people are promoted into leadership positions due to the longevity of their tenure with a company or how they perform in their current positions. As a member of the management team of Dr. Pepper Snapple Group I have observed that there is more to becoming a successful leader than experience and tenure. We are managing various people who possess different personalities and work ethics and we are constantly adjusting our leadership skills to meet the diversity of the workforce. It is in this realization
Charismatic leadership is one of four subdivisions of the larger concept of transformational leadership (Bass, 1990). Charismatic leaders are self-confident, dominant, purposeful, articulate, influential, idealistic, and expressive. They have high energy levels, strong convictions, the ability to display empathy, and are risk takers (Bass, 1990). By stimulating "ailing corporations, revitalizing aging bureaucracies or launching new enterprises" (Howell and Avolio, 1995), charismatic leaders demonstrate how truly effective they can be. These leaders are often described as visionaries, with a strong sense of the future and a passion for their vision. They are able to achieve the vision by developing strategies to
I define leadership as the ability to provide strength and coverage to support a Sailor, regardless of rank. The ability to instill Core Values, provide training and the tools a Sailor will need to excel in both their professional and personal life. A true leader will support a Sailor, any Sailor, during the high times of a career, but to be a solid force if there are any lows.
For the last fourteen years, I have been able to gain and model leadership skills within my tax preparation business. I am an emotionally intelligent and self-confident leader who is good at providing a compelling future to my employees. Even though I’ve been successful in leadership, I still have room for development and growth. To grow as an effective leader, I need to improve on how I manage my tax preparers’ performance and I need to improve my mindset while leading.
What makes a great leader, and how can I be that person? Or maybe the better question is, could I be that person? I’ve spent some time this semester asking the people who I considered to be great school leaders what are the characteristics of a good Leader? Two of the most common answers included: A good leader is someone that empowers people to make their own decisions. This sounds good, however, implies that we let the employees make up their own minds about what to do, and how to get the end result. What if the decisions made are not in line with the goals of the organization? Another one: A good leader is someone who gives clear, direct orders, and commands her employees. Good as well, although seemingly a contradiction to the
There is a lot of debate on the differences between leadership and management. In the sports profession there are both leaders and managers. Which positions historically lead and which positions do more managing?
∴ I agree with both positions since some leaders are effective based on their comprehensive knowledge of their job, whereas other leaders are extremely effective based on their extra ordinary imagination.
The main organization of this paper follows the introduction of teacher leadership along with the above mentioned factors. First of all, some of the external factors will be discussed and supported with the help of academic evidences and examples from personal experience. The second portion of the paper deals with the internal skills that are necessary for a teacher to be a good leader. At the end, the dependence of these factors and the role of this dependence for the success of teacher leadership are discussed. The main objective of the paper is to provide a platform for the support that
Despite the benefits listed above, leadership succession remains a cause of concern for a number of organisations. DDI’s Global Leadership Forecast from 2011 showed how only 38% of participating leaders said the quality of leadership within their organisation is either very good or excellent. More importantly, only 18% of HR professionals in the same survey felt the organisations have a strong bench to respond to future needs. In order to make the most of the leadership pipeline model, organisations must also focus on the following four elements.
In the world we live in today, it is very common to wonder how life skills are taught outside of the home. Most children and young adults need the proper guidance and direction to live a better life. Counselors, mentors, and advisors are community leaders that set an example and possess the knowledge to influence the betterment of others. A true leader is one who has the power, passion, and ability to guide others in the right direction. Leadership is having the control and will power to direct any group of people towards a common goal. There are several types of leadership traits and effective leadership styles that will be best for different situations.
But, really, what makes a leader? Is it the base skillset, a certain kind of mind attuned to the goals ahead? Is it what they do, or who they are? Is it both? Neither? When students think about leadership, especially on their college campuses, there are many images that could possibly come up for them-- they could imagine their resident assistants, stern-faced and cold-hearted in their imaginations, or maybe the presidents of organizations, too chipper and too pushy. But who else do they think of? Do they think of Greek organization executive board members? Do they think of football players? Do they think of the graduate students and professionals they interact with? Do they think of themselves?
Over the course of our semester so far, I have learned that leadership is the product of skills, behaviors, experiences, and relationships working in tandem. During this time, I ask myself the following questions: What makes a successful leader?, How do you recognize a leader when you meet one?, and lastly, Am I a good leader? With this last question I thought about what leadership meant to me personally and how I personified it in a role of authority. This paper analyzes and critically applies my personal strengths and values as an individual to a leadership context. Based on my personal opinions, data collected from personal inventory surveys, and the use of leadership theories, I intend to define my emerging leadership style.
“It is centered in groups or organizations, rather than individuals, and engages the group in heart, mind, spirit, and energy”. [Lorilee,R.S., & Lela,V..(1995)]. {From this point of view, we can assume that leadership will change from the individual-centered to collective-centered. Leadership also can change from a group of curriculum to a developing, adapted educational process where it focused on building a good relationship. Its mean the leadership is a process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others, towards the achievement of a goal.
