Parental alienation remains a growing problem in the United States today. Every day, the court system denies fathers the inalienable rights to their offspring. When a father struggles to have access to his children, he must seek legal action to ensure the enforcement of his rights. The division of the Judicial System that oversees all issues regarding children, custody and parental rights would become what we now know as Family Court. However, due to the antiquated views that society has on a father’s role in the family, there is not much justice in this system. Even with a few underperforming aspects, this advertisement, in its form, content and outlet, successfully promotes ‘The Fathers’ Rights Movement’. There are many aspects of an audio-visual advertisement that, through an in-depth analysis, can explain its primary purpose, context and message. One way is through narration. This ad was narrated by a soft-spoken man, most likely middle-aged or younger, presumably a man who has young children. This man speaks directly to the audience. The fact that it is a male speaking inspires the initial emotional connection. For the fathers who are actively involved in a Family Court case, or the fathers who are considering legal action, male encouragement goes farther than that of a female, because a woman is most likely who they are fighting against. In addition to the person speaking, the viewer must also pay attention to the words that are being spoken. In the case of this TFRM commercial, the narrator begins by stating, “We go by many names: Dad, Padre, sometimes Old Man, usually it’s Daddy. Daddy is the favorite.” (“Commercial”). This statement also helps further define the intended audience. The term “padre” refers to those of Spanish, Mexican or Latin American descent because when translated, it means “father”.
