Diversity reflects how individuals interact with each in all areas of life experience who happen to be different either through gender difference, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, religious beliefs, etc. I was born and raised in Kenya, a country with diverse population comprising of native Kenyans, Indians, Muslims, European, Asians, Americans, etc. as well as a country where there are more than 42 different languages spoken by the population. Kenyan population is comprised of people from different parts of the world but the most unique component of Kenyan population is the large number of different ethnic groups who speaks different languages and portrays a different cultural dimension. Their choice of living lifestyles, food, and religious belief identifies each group in addition to locality of their background. The citizens of the country have to endure more interactions with people of different background and some who speaks a different language in their daily activities including their workplace. A study conducted found out that, “Socially different group members do more than simply introduce new viewpoints or approaches. (Phillips, Liljenquist & Neale 2010). After finishing my college studies back in Kenya, I moved to United States to pursue further studies and what I have experienced is totally different than my previous life. The higher socio – economic groups are normally more likely to arrange gatherings and events, to introduce the younger generations to the variety of cultures, beliefs and values and therefore embracing them into the very community that they will shape in years to come.

Diversity- recognises that all though people have thing in common they are also different in many ways. Diversity therefore consists of visible and non-visible factors which include personal characteristics such as backgrounds culture, by recognising and understanding our individual differences and embracing them we can create a productive environment in which everybody feels valued.
Cultural conflicts and hate usually cause a divide within a nation. However, cooperation, inclusion and respect assist in uniting a country. Multiculturalism therefore strengthens a country, especially if there are programs that work towards promoting cultural understanding and eliminating racism. It also encourages all people to take part in the economic, political and social life of the society.

Diversity is an ongoing discussion in day-to-day life. Not many situations occur without diversity having a role. There are a multitude of topics that introduces or involves diversity, to include age, sex, race, gender, ethnicity and so on. Prior to participating in this Diversity Awareness class, I’ve always thought diversity was more geared around discrimination and racism. Through weekly readings and discussions, I have discovered that diversity is much broader than that. There are many countries that are mixed culturally
