All over the world people are affected by drugs and gangs. I got a chance to learn about how to prevent that from happening to me. My G.R.A.D.E teacher told us a very scary story. A boy who had prefect grades and was popular, was caught stealing a video game. I know never to do this because not only would it effect my future, it also will affect my family.
Gang members may feel that gangs are merely a family and other see them as violent people with no direction that need to be locked away. Gangs cause fear to those that live around them, but to children that have no support system gangs appear to be a surrogate family. Gangs are not all about friends committing crime, but to a gang member a way of life. Gangs that are a threat to society is a problem, but one that can be changed by silencing the influence of the media, parenting your children, and changing the nature of the gang.
The study revealed the prevalence of youth gangs and gang-related activity, especially in major metropolitan cities, where youth gangs increased thirty-six percent from 2002 to 2011 (Merrin, Hong, & Espalgae, 2015). The study attributed numerous factors to the rise in youth gang involvement, and highlighted the primary individual factor as mental health problems including depression, traumatic stress, and antisocial behavior (Merrin, Hong, & Espalgae, 2015). Additionally studies suggest youths who participate in delinquent behavior, consume alcohol, and use illicit drugs are at a significantly higher risk to become involved with gangs (Merrin, Hong, & Espalgae, 2015). The family context of a youth’s development plays a vital role in their
What is brotherhood? How does it apply to those involved? Why does it exist? Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines brotherhood as “an association for a particular purpose.” To gang members, young and old, brotherhood is an escape from society’s constant pressure to fit in, to succeed, to conform to social norms. It is within a brotherhood that gang members find peace and comfort. Brotherhood is a way of life; it is the very essence that allows a gang to thrive in the metropolis of violence.
Throughout history, divisions and factions have been made amongst people based on race, ethnicity, religion, territory, and several other personal factors. In most cases, people prefer to be within a group of individuals who are similar to them, rather than feel out of place. One of the easiest ways for people to remain attached to their “own kind” is for them to form special groups and bonds within certain areas, which have since been labeled as gangs. When gangs first originated they were meant to keep certain groups of people linked, because when everyone is dispersed those groups do not have as big of impact on societal functions. However, since then, gangs have changed drastically, in both their purpose and organization. Over the past five centuries, the United States has experienced a dramatic increase in gangs and gang-related activity due to technological advances among other factors, and this increase is not expected to slow down in the near future.
Hagedorn, M. J. (1996) examined the nature American street gangs. The research shows historical evolution of gangs’ prevalence in US and major reasons for their enormous growth in various regions. Gangs erupted from economically under privileged communities while others inherited their gang background from their families and continued in America. The gang culture evolved and attracted hundreds of people mainly youth. Hagedorn stressed upon the equal division of economic development and job throughout major gang area. Furthermore, he examined that the growth of gangs in the country began after the influx of migrants after world war two.
Gang activity is present in every city and many suburbs in our country today. Parents and other community members must first acknowledge that gangs exist in their neighborhoods and then take action to keep their kids away from gangs. Recently, several Crown Point community groups, including the police department and the school corporation, sponsored a gang awareness meeting for parents and other adult members of the community. Guest speaker, Andy Rodriguez, a youth counselor at the ALSE Clements Center in East Chicago, Indiana, said the gang problem is no longer only an urban concern, but it has spread into the suburban areas as well. He also said the days of people ignoring the gang problem are past.
Gangs and Violence happen all the time, studies show that kids age 14-18 may think that they can not get into gangs but you can easily become a victim of a gang. In addition, violence is a force of violating, damaging, and abusing property. Today’s teenagers (which i refer to as the class) who join gangs may often have a hard time at school, have low self-esteem,and often feel unloved at home.So that’s why you never think about joining because your loved ones may not look at you the same and your friends will become your worst enemies. Think again when you are ask to join a gang, just be like “sorry will not that interested in gangs”.If you do this you would obviously look like the bigger and better person. If you do this your family will show
Discuss what is currently being done to combat drug violence, and describe the effectiveness of these tactics.
Gang involvement is on the rise in most communities affecting socioeconomic status, racial relationships, and inhabitants (Esbensen et. al., 2012, p. 128). Despite a continuous increase with youth gang affiliations in underserved communities, there is still a scarcity of promising or effectual gang prevention and intervention programs offered by schools. Facing time and resource constraints school administrators need to consider the “cost and benefits” of each possible intervention plan (Esbensen et. al., 2012, p. 142). Consequential to low intervention program, risk factors such as communal disorganization, poverty, low educational success, acquaintance with aberrant peers, and little to no parental attachment will continue to make a path toward gang affiliation and criminal actions. Observations have confirmed that gang involvement correlates with increased law violating behaviors alongside victimization, vastly decreasing the possibility of graduating. Without having met the average educational expectations may result in severe consequences throughout an individual’s life. It is for this reason that workshops, rather than programs, that are relatively low to maintain and very beneficial need to be formulated and implemented in schools.
This quote is important because it proves that people just judge the outside and have no real intention of challenging accepted beliefs. The accepted belief for drug dealing is that these individuals go into a dangerous and illegal job, but come out making fortunes. Many individuals claim that drug dealers to be low-income, high school dropouts that join the business to make quick money. What most people do not know, is that this illegal business is just like any corporation, with pyramid structure, meaning the lower the status the lower the income. As a consequence, the pyramid structure challenges what the “ideal belief” of drug dealers are since it contradicts the theory of drug dealers making top dollar and hence the reason why they still
Gang violence and organized crime have become a serious problem for El Salvador and Central America for the past decade. Gang violence is an enormous problem in El Salvador especially among young people with an estimate of 60,000 minors belonging to gangs. According to government organization Instituto de Medicina Legal, the country has the highest murder rate in Latin America and the Caribbean with 103 murders per 100,000 person. High rates of violence are contributed by competition between rival gangs and police brutality towards suspected gang members. The institute also reports that on average there was one homicide per hour in the first three months of 2016.
Gangs, they’re all around us,everywhere, and anywhere. How do us americans feel about gangs, and their affects on our environment ? I’m against gangs because of their affect on our youth. It affects the youth causing distractions, peer pressure, and blocking opportunities for them. Gangs are one of the top three causes of crime in America today. And gives America’s crime system a lot of difficulty with solving the problem.
“Gang” “Youth Gang” and “Street Gang” are just labels used to describe young people consisting of three or more individuals organized to achieve a typical objective and who share a common identity. There is no single and universally accepted definition of gang, gang member and gang activities in the United States, however, the Federal Definition according to National Institute of Justice, “An association of three or more individuals;Whose members collectively identify themselves by adopting a group identity, which they use to create an atmosphere of fear or intimidation, frequently by employing one or more of the following: a common name, slogan, identifying sign, symbol […] whose members engage in criminal activity or acts of juvenile delinquency that if committed by an adult would be crimes with the intent to enhance or preserve the association 's power, reputation or economic resources.” Juvenile gang is a form of structured delinquency. The group has 2 or more members, aged 12 to 21 who gather together to intimidate or harass or damage property. In American History the earliest documentations of youth gangs goes way back to the 19th century as being primarily composed of Irish youths. Moreover, because they were new immigrants, many of them lived in the worst slums of New York, Philadelphia
Gang youth can be seen as a marginalized population due to their involvement with street violence and drugs. Some youth eventually leave the gang life while others remain in it during adulthood. In some eyes, even in the eyes of some educators themselves, education does not tend to correlate with gang members, however, some youth do leave the gang life behind and decide to get a college education. For those who do change that lifestyle, what influenced them to leave the gang life and pursue a college education? What sparked that change in direction in those individuals?
There are a lot of solutions to stopping gang violence. A big one is to stop the drug trade. A lot of drugs are distributed in the neighborhoods the gangs control. If the drugs were stopped in the neighborhoods it would at least slow down a lot of the drug distribution that goes on in the world. The people in the United States alone spend 15 billion dollars on illegal drugs every year. If the people spent their money on better things we could make our economy so much better.
