changed and this particular journal also helped emphasis this change. I’ve learned through my own personal experiences that some students don’t learn the same way. Many of the teachers that I have had, have always presented the information through powerpoint or just lecturing, kind of like college, but not all students learn the best through this way. One of Freire 's quotes from the article is, “Education is suffering from narration sickness.” This is an important quote to me from this article because emphasizes that teachers tend to lecture, speak, or narrate what the lesson may be and this is a good way to lose interest of the student even if you don’t notice it right away. Many of my classes are like that in the college level; I go to class and I’m physically there, but my mind tends to wander off. This just shows some of the flaws that are in the education system that Freire is introducing. Now this statement itself is another reason why I am motivated as a teacher though. Through this and field placement, I am shown different ways that teachers can teach lessons and ways to relate the information so the students can understand. A goal is to have every student understand the material that we are going over no matter what. “With actually interacting with the students I learned that it is going to be difficult as a teacher. The only reason I say this is because there were so many students who needed one on one help from the teacher, but she would’ve never been able to
Another major issue that is addressed in the article is with the teachers and their teaching styles. The method in which most teachers teach their
Students are being taught the wrong way according the Freire. Freire mentions "narration leads the students to memorize mechanically the narrated content. Worse yet, it turns them into containers, into receptacles to be filled by the teacher"(pg. 1). In other words this means that 's a teacher 's or instructor 's job is to teach the children all the requirements that are needed and they expect them to know all the
\item The teachers always want their lessons to be interesting and they introduce the real life problem before they can go deep into the content of the subject.
Lipman states, "The conventional wisdom holds that teachers are supposed to tease knowledge out of students, rather than pound it into their heads." This is an example to some that may read this article, that could be anyone who is interested in our education system.
Teaching is not just about drilling a subject into the minds of those students you adorn the plastic seats in front of you each year;
A final way differentiated instruction prepares students from the 21st century workplace is through direct instruction. Whether students go to college or enter the workforce, students will be required to receive information directly from one, or many, people and think critically about it. Whether it is sitting through a lecture in college, or a meeting at work, students will need to have the ability to take in information verbally and apply it to their area of study or expertise. In my classroom, I try to begin a lesson and end a lesson with some form of short discussion or lecture. I believe that it helps to either set up, or bring closure to, the information we are covering. For example, at the beginning a lesson this week I spoke for about fifteen minutes introducing the struggle for equality that African-Americans faced in the early 1900s. This short lecture helped lay the groundwork for the next two days and assisted in giving my students context for the upcoming hybrid stations.
What do you think the problem of teacher driven talking or lecturing most of the time?
This information also came from the textbook that each student had for the class, but the teacher reiterates on some points and tips during the lecture that may not be in the textbook. There was no homework throughout the span of the course, only weekly quizzes and triweekly tests. Hardly any conversations are made between the teacher and students, but when there are questions that are either after class and short questions or they are left unanswered. Without a close student-teacher relationship in this class, there was a clear distance between the teacher and students. Throughout the course, I felt as if I was only memorizing the information I was told, not having a clear understanding of what was being taught to me. This was not the classroom environment I would ever picture myself, questioning why there are teachers who use this similar concept in a classroom, and why the problem-posing method is disregarded by teachers today.
The traditional face-to-face classroom fosters a relationship between the students and teacher with their direct contact and interactions (Banna, 2014). This setting also provides for ease of communications, ease in completing group activities, and for the teacher to observe the student practicing the new skills. The information becomes richer because, the student feels the entire experience, not just hearing and seeing the material presented to them (Banna, 2014). The teacher can adapt their teaching style at that any moment if they see issues by how the student reacts during the class, which provides better results (Guest Contributor,
In the United States, modern day education seems to expect students to know material before the material is even provided and taught. The future of America depends on education. The brain is adapting and storing all of the great information being taught in the first quarter of someone 's life. I am a strong believer that no matter what the material if the teacher is entertaining and lively, students will enjoy the topic more. In today 's society students are distracted with all kinds of technology; teachers are competing for students attention. That is why I think it is imperative to provide the students with teachers that interact with students, genuinely enjoy teaching and want their students to succeed. Students are often stuck with many boring teachers who read out of the book and expect the students to regurgitate the information on an assessment. This could be beneficial for some students, but others need interaction, pictures, and aid from the teacher, even possibly some instilled confidence.
Everyday, teachers are faced with the challenge of teaching students new information that is valuable to their future. Teachers are responsible to determine what and how information is taught. How this information is taught to students is pertinent to their success; therefore, teachers must be able to use effective teaching methods in the classroom. Students have diverse learning styles; therefore, teachers need to determine how students learn best and pattern their teaching to accommodate these differences. During elementary school, children learn to read and write, acquire a basic understanding of content areas, and develop dispositions toward
He also mentioned how this theory caused a profound impact on education and proposes a major transformation in the way our schools are run. It suggests the importance of training teachers to present their lessons in a wide variety of ways using music, cooperative learning, art activities, role play, multimedia, field trips, inner reflection, and much more.
Learning is not a skill that is necessarily instinctual or easy, and therefore different approaches must be used to make learning easier and more fun for students. Teaching is not a skill that can be memorized or made repetitive, and so teachers must continue to challenge not only their students, but also themselves. Teachers that become complacent in their jobs are not good teachers. Those who can find a way to make an old lesson new and exciting will have an energized classroom, and will be reenergized themselves.
There are many aspects to teaching and as a teacher it is necessary to understand the most important aspects of teaching and how they should be incorporated into the classroom. A teacher’s most important job is not to teach specific material but to build relationships with the students and ensure they feel safe and cared for. Once the teacher is able to ensure this then they should focus on teaching, however teaching is more than listing off facts and sharing information with the students. As teachers it is essential we try to engage our students. There are many ways to engage students and each teacher as a specific way they get their classroom involved in learning. During my field experience I have learned the importance of being able to engage students and I have seen what a classroom looks like when students are not engaged. My field experience has helped to reflect on student engagement and how I would place the experience in my philosophy of education.
Throughout the majority of my education, including college, I have felt like a passive member of the classroom. Teachers saw me as a clear slate that needed to be filled with information. I consumed countless facts, and memorized numerous processes, most of them not being my own. This approach to teaching has proven to be unsuccessful to the goals of education. Students are diverse, with their own learning styles and their own knowledge that they bring to the table, and these should be supported and expanded on in the classroom. The goal of education is to support learners and thinkers, and not to condition minds to all think the same ways.
