Though many feel that the American education system is a model of success, compared to the educational system of Finland, the American system is in dire need of reform. Finlad’s educational system has multiple different factors compared to America's system, making their students more successful and also ranking them number one in the entire world. What can the American learning system do in order to be more effective and efficient? Finding ways to help reduce students’ stress and anxiety would be one way to improve their learning system; along with focusing on each student as an individual, and creating classes to teach students basics that will help them through life. Why is the same outcome expected out of every student when there are no two minds that act or think the same? While countries like Finland work on collaboration, America is focused on standardized testing and how well a student can memorize material. Each and every student should be looked at individually, focusing on their skills and assets. This would bring out so much more creativity and success to the country.
The lack of proficiency in people today is in fact really sad. America is teeming with people who know how to solve a difficult equation in math, yet don't acquire the basic skills of changing a tire or even writing a check. Howe states in his article that “in recent years, a growing contingent has advocated for the return of mandated ‘Home EC’ and shop classes in schools.” What this education system needs is to add classes that teach students these necessities. Skills like teamwork and learning how to be a strong leader are also extremely important and should be taught in classes to help build America's
