Communication is critical to the success of any business especially in the field of law enforcement. As a leader, it is essential to convey operational objectives with clarity and purpose. The challenge is to communicate in a manner that is effective in meaning and direct in intentions. Time must be invested along with understanding, communication and the essential element of listening to work towards progression, (Smith, 2011). Through effective communication, a leader can influence subordinates to follow the vision, therefore leading the organization to future aspirations of success and longevity. In order to be an effective leader you must be able to relate to others through open communication, (Bennis, 2009). Effective communication is critical in establishing effective relationships within an organization, (Kouzes and Posner, 2012). In order to add clarity and acceptance of our vision a leader needs to communicate the steps in getting there. These steps can be in the form of short term and long term goals. Goals provide direction in obtaining our vision, they are also instrumental in the success of an organization, (Lawler, 2003). The vision must incorporate values that are ethical and for the good of the organization driving towards commitment and dedication to achieve. Without vision we have no direction, we are limiting our abilities to grasp the future, (Kouzes and Posner, 2012). Discipline and direction are very important in creating a vision with clarity.
Communicate is essential in health and social care settings because without a good communication to patients, families, colleagues and management is very difficult to deliver good service of care.
Hi Doug. I agree that communication is a very good perspective to contemplate when considering leadership. Communication can be essential to successful leadership through identifying risks, issues, and other barriers on a project, or in an organization. Regardless of the skills, abilities, or traits that a leader may possess, being deficient in effective communication will cause failure in reaching the goals and objectives of a group (Solaja, Idowu, & James, 2016). This is due to the importance of information across all spectrums of an organization, including leaders and followers (Solaja et al., 2016). Understanding how people give and receive information will allow a leader to change the various methods of communication (e.g. newsletters,
Communication is primarily an exchange of information, ideas, or thoughts. This paper will focus on the process of verbal and nonverbal communication as well as the components of each. It outline the formal and informal channels of criminal channels. This paper will also list the different barriers to effective communication within a criminal justice organization. Finally it will cover strategies that can be implemented to overcome communication barriers within criminal justice organizations.
One of the biggest challenges facing leaders/managers is communication, yet it is the most important aspect of being a leader/manager. Communication builds trust and trust is a powerful force that builds loyalty, increases credibility and supports effective communications. It gives you the benefit of the doubt in situations where you want to be heard, understood and believed. For instance, developing a new policy or changing a current policy, communication is vital for all physicians and employees to know, apply, educate, and inforce. Formal and informal communication are just a few ways to communicate information (Beslin, 2004).
Law enforcement agencies across the nation are facing challenging and complex issues that demand tailored solutions. From immigration to technology to recruitment and retention, the challenges are far reaching. To effectively communicate and connect with an audience, leaders must be able to adapt to each generation, technology, and evolving statutes, which govern a democratic society. Leaders must be able to communicate the message clearly to ensure that the receiver understands the correct meaning and the intention of the message. Equally important, it is critical for leaders to communicate well in order to motivate and inspire followers to accomplish greater achievements. The culmination issues of immigration and crime, racial disparity, and advancing technology have become the landscape for modern law enforcement. Twenty-first century leaders must be prepared to not only navigate the technological changes, but also effectively manage controversial issues, such as immigration, racial disparities.
Communication issues are also a challenge for criminal justice agencies. There are two communication barriers one is individual and the other is organizational. Individual communication issues are that a person’s own interpretation of a message may not be what is meant. An organization’s culture can be a barrier in communicating with another organization. The court system, police and corrections have different jargon that is used within their culture. This sometimes makes communication difficult between the organizations as well as with the public. To handle these challenges a leader must be an affective communicator (Duelin, 2010).
The number one component that will make a law enforcement manager successful and in turn will make the agency successful is communication. Effective communication is the most important element for any successful law enforcement agency. The law enforcement manager must be able to successfully communicate his or her desires, wants, and goals throughout the entire organization. “Many ‘people problems’
Communication is a two way process and is the basis of all relationships irrelevant of the nature of communication. There is an array of reasons why people communicate such as to develop relationships or to share information with one another. People communicate in order to reach out to one another and express feelings, emotions and their opinions. These different reasons stated, amongst others, are important in the work setting and no more so than as a practitioner working with vulnerable young
troduction Hook: As James Humes once stated, “the art of communication is the language of leadership” (Humes). Brief introduction about the law enforcement field and the issues within it that I have chosen.
To get the most out of these types of employees, the leaders of these organizations need to be seen as confident, decisive, credible and accomplished (Olson & Simerson, 2015). When the leader can master these items, then he/she will have the support of the officer, and they will be able to share the vision with the organization to help effect the change in the policing practices. When the officers can envision meeting the goal, they will be able to work in collaboration with the community to achieve the defined
: "Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen." We have all heard that famous quote from a very legendary leader, Winston Churchill. In this particular quote, I believe Churchill puts the emphasis on the aspect of listening. As easy as it is for us to speak our thoughts, feelings, and emotions, is it really as easy to listen? Throughout this paper, I will focus on why listening is important in leadership. I will identify different ways to listen, what effective listening is, and how it can impact leadership.
Effective communication in Law Enforcement is vital so that the Officer understands what is happening in that situation and that the Officer is completely understood (Fred Leland Jr, 2002). An Officer cannot help his community without construction of a healthy relationship with the members of the community
In “Great Communication Secrets of Great Leaders” John Baldoni identifies ways in which communication defines leadership. Communications defines leadership by developing and reinforcing the bond of trust, affirming the organizational vision, facilitating a two-way flow or information, creating the impetus for organization effectiveness, and driving results. All of these traits of communication are important for a leader to convey. They allow him or her to inform people, involve everyone, ignite people’s imaginations, and invite participants.
In order to see the goals through he must implement policies the department must adhere to or exemplify; these must be clear and concise to avoid confusion and ensure all employees know how they relate both to one another and their environment. Doran (1981) states, “the establishment of objectives and the development of their respective action plans are the most critical steps in a company’s management process.” In the case of criminal justice, rulification must be kept in mind; that making rules and polices to fit every scenario is not going to be possible. One must avoid having so many
Within nursing, there is a very delicate balance between a nurse and her patient that must be maintained if the patient is to receive the care that he or she is entitled to receive. The patient must feel comfortable trusting his nurse to hear his needs and respond to them appropriately and in order for this to be the case, the nurse must first provide therapeutic communication effective enough to elicit such a response in her patient. There are both verbal and non-verbal components within the nurse-patient relationship. These components greatly influence how a nurse and patient will relate to each other and, ultimately, greatly influence the care that the patient receives.
