Effective Leadership For A Business Protocol

This work is part one of an ongoing communications portfolio which will be expanded upon weekly. Barrett (2011) describes leadership communication as “the controlled, purposeful transfer of meaning...” (p. 6). The following is a self-assessment (Barrett, 2011, pp. 407-411) which will help gauge my current leadership communication abilities. Each area will be answered with either excel (master of skill) , competent (acceptable but could improve) or need to develop (needs attention).

“Developing excellent communication skills is absolutely essential to effective leadership. The leader must be able to share knowledge and ideas to transmit a sense of urgency and enthusiasm to others. If a leader can't get a message across clearly and motivate others to act on it, then having a message doesn't even matter."

A leader must listen to its followers and vice versa. Both Gardner and Wooden in their books provide examples that both ineffective and effective communication can affect a group or organization—for better or worse. However, through positive open communication that is produced from the group can lead to positive and effective improvement (Wooden, 2005, p.198-201; Gardner,1990, p.86) for the work environment and respectability between leader and follower.

For instance, the lead facilitator must be able to handle pressures of getting blood out to various parts of the world where verbal communication can have great impact on the perception of the organization. For instance, verbal communication may not always be face-to-face where these leaders may have to delegate or receive information via electronic methods. It is important for the communication not to over load the receiver with too much information, or gibberish, misleading the intent of the contact, or worse confusing the receiver. Other types of communication are non-verbal where a gesture can lead one to believe that the culture of an organization is rude or disruptive.

What is communication? What is leadership communication? These are two definitions that will be answered in this paper. You will take an extensive look at how communication from the top of the food chain to the bottom impacts workforce and insight on different communicating qualities utilized by leaders and their effects. Explain why a leader must communicate effectively. Describe positive image and its relationship with effective leadership communication. Describe ethics and its relationship with effective leadership communication, importance of emotional intelligence, and importance of mindfulness

As simple and as complex as it could be Richards (2017) cited that organization whose leader is able to convey good communication honestly and openly can actually make a big difference, thus, it is needed that leaders can undergo trainings and coaching to equipped themselves with skills that foster effective communication. It will be in this sense that leaders may be able to develop or improvise means to keep the communication between both parties free flowing.

In “Great Communication Secrets of Great Leaders” John Baldoni identifies ways in which communication defines leadership. Communications defines leadership by developing and reinforcing the bond of trust, affirming the organizational vision, facilitating a two-way flow or information, creating the impetus for organization effectiveness, and driving results. All of these traits of communication are important for a leader to convey. They allow him or her to inform people, involve everyone, ignite people’s imaginations, and invite participants.

According to Cook (2009), a leader must demonstrate the four crucial EQ concepts; self-aware, self-management, awareness of others, and relating to others (p. 71), and being conscientious of their body language, tone of voice, and the words used (p. 74). The author further explains by applying the push and pull method, a leader has the foundation and capabilities of becoming a good leader (p. 75). Most leaders might think about the words they are going to say to a co-worker, so they can influence them in the direction they want them to go. However, many leaders do not pay much attention to their body language and when the two are not sending the same message it will cause a conflict in the received message. Communication affect most likely every aspect of managerial behavior. To be an effective leader, you should have strong teamwork building skills. Effective leaders must have strong communication skill and the ability to take feedback whether positive or negative. There are a key components in the communicator should ask themselves before given a demonstration our presentation. In order to be effective, while transmitting their message (Sender/Transmit Message / Receiver) an effective leader should walk away knowing the listener received the message. Communicating effectively start with a resilient introduction, selling your ideal to your listeners. To ensure their getting their point across or making your case within a very short time. In most cases you want to grab your audience attention by creating small power points; adding this could be key to your presentation allowing you to keep the audience actively listening to your presentation. Taking small breaks within the presentation allowing time to ask for feedback. Make sure you bring your ideals to life, create examples. Have your audience think to themselves, would this strategy work for me? Give them a clear and powerful presentation. Staying on course makes you an effective leader.

Leadership is an important attribute in individuals such as managers, academic experts, and researchers. The topic of leadership continues to gain popularity and importance in almost all sectors. The way leaders in managerial positions communicate determines their effectiveness and success in achieving high levels of performance and success in their organizations. There are numerous books that provide an insight into effective leadership and communication. One of such books is by Atwater and Waldman (2012). This paper provides a summary, contextual analysis and critique of the book.

The first two chapters discussed the relevant background factors and the internal influences such as the art of communication involving verbal and nonverbal, defensive and supportive, emotional intelligence, and team dynamics (Tubbs, 2012). Although these concepts apply to all aspects of communication, the Tubbs model focuses more on using the communication skills to the small group context. It is essential for business leaders to have excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills, as leaders are often a symbol of a company’s integrity and this affects not only how customers perceive the company, but also impacts the thoughts and actions of lower positioned employees. For example, a leader that speaks using improper grammar, or writes correspondence with spelling errors throughout it, could project a negative image that can be harmful to a company. Customers might conclude that the leader is incompetent and they might decide that they do not wish to purchase goods from a company that hires inept leaders. Later in topic 5 we covered off the concept of leaders as communicators. In the topic we dealt with the concepts of the feedback loop and effective listening and conflict resolution. It is tis communication aspect of leadership that is perhaps not as meaningful in the description.

* A direct and participative communication and meeting style is common, control is disliked and leadership is challenged to show expertise and best accepted when it’s based on it.
