Portfolio Task – Module 1 Effective Study skills are the sole foundation of a sound education Word Count – 523 Effective study skills help a student to learn and build a sound education, but what works for one student may not work for another. A student needs to look at the different types of techniques available and see what works for them. Examples of study skills are planning , note taking, effective writing, time management. ( Cottrell ,2013) explains that it isn't a great difference between the skills needed for academic study and those learned elsewhere. There is also scientific opinion that intelligence is attributed to DNA passed on from your parents. ( Plomin , Spinath 2004) Environment – If a student is surrounded by other people who value education then that can have a huge impact on driving them to learn .( Kenedy, 2010) Having access to the tools of learning are a great help. Access to books ( latest versions) , internet, good universities. It has been argued that a nation's GDP and the education of its population are inexorably linked. ( Huebler , 2008). Also, a person's geographical place is a factor in this area. Some areas of the world are less disposed to women having access to education so a person's geographic area / sexual orientation are certainly a factor in this discussion. To conclude, in order to attain a sound education a student must be able to effectively develop study skills as these give a solid base to learning. They also develop a student's ability to think critically and communicate in an effective manner. Whilst these are important I think it is also important to recognise that environment and geographical envirnmemt / sexual orientation also play an important part in the argument above.
